I know exactly what Purcell has done. I also know that he's made a good deal of friends in his time at State, friends who would have liked to have seen him get the job. And now they're upset that he didn't. I'm sure they would come up with some reasoning why other hires were a slap in the face to him too. If he wants to move on, he should. If I were passed over for Lee Fowler and Debbie Yow I certainly would. It's a shame that we're going to lose one of the few people that work at NC State worth a damn but that doesn't mean we should've promoted him just to keep him either.

So if I'm understanding everything on PackPride correctly, this is a bad hire because:

1. She's not Bobby Purcell.

2. Maryland fans on the internet don't like her, and we suddenly think Maryland fans are smart and have valid opinions.

3. She's not Bobby Purcell.

4. She, along with her late sister and Janet Reno, is a key figure in a bull dyke conspiracy to take all of the funding away from our men's sports and give it to the women's teams.

5. She's not Bobby Purcell.

6. Despite our earlier fury at the search committee for giving Dr. Woodson 6 names instead of 3, and our subsequent declarations that the committee wasn't doing its job right, we now think that if, by some chance, Woodson may or may not have ignored the committee's recommendations, he should be fired for this.

7. Spending $75,000 on a search firm and then hiring Kay Yow's sister is unacceptable, while spending $75,000 on a search firm and then hiring the head of the booster club would have been the ideal outcome.

8. She doesn't get along with noted megadouche Gary Williams.

9. Something something something Herb.

10. Blah blah blah TOB blah.

Great post. After sleeping on it and now looking over her accompishments at Maryland, I am not as upset about this hire. Time will tell obviously and I still feel bad for Purcell, but Maryland has a respected athletics program that is normally in the top 35 or so in the Director's Cup. That kind of success was not even fathomable under old fuckup Fowler.

My only concern is how she might handle the firing of TOB if this season is complete shit like we expect (and possibly Lowe for the same reasons).

Preface: I've got no opinion on Debbie Yow. I haven't followed her career at all.

For some reason I can picture a similar quote on a message board for whoever ends up hiring Fowler.

NCSU fans on the internet don't like him, and we suddenly think NCSU fans are smart and have valid opinions.

Just saying. If people hate her in a few years I can already imagine all the posts... "why did we hire her when it was clear she was no good after all the hate the Maryland fans showed her" etc., etc.

Debbie Yow isn't Lee Fowler. Right now that's good enough for me.

Kodiak, well done sir.

I'm definitely open to Yow, because (like ^ said) she's not Lee Fowler. I just hope Purcell doesn't feel sucker punched -- it'd be horrible to lose him from WPC.

I'm sure the BCS has helped her & Capital One's help didn't hurt the stadium renovation lately either.

It's a good thing that we're hiring someone who is great at balancing the budget since our athletics department is losing money!

Oh wait that isn't right at all!

This hire does not fix the issues that we have. Yow isn't a bad AD, but she isn't what we need.

Maryland football and baseball are in shambles, Gary Williams was already in College Park when she showed up, and we don't even have the sports where Maryland claims most of its success. To her credit she made massive improvements to the women's basketball team, and while I like women's basketball, it isn't going to pay the bills.

I hope she's fantastic and cleans out the crap that we have in the athletic department, but the hire doesn't make sense to me.

I was more pissed last night than I have been today. Still don't think this is the best hire, but hopefully after this 2pm presser we'll feel better. If she reaches out to the fan base and offers her knowledge of how we've utterly failed as an athletic department for the better part of 20 years and how she hopes to instill change and a shift in culture then I'll be behind this move a bit more. The issue I have with it initially is that MD's football program is in absolute shambles, same with their baseball program. I feel good about where we are with WBB and MBB, but in terms of FB and Baseball she hasn't proved herself knowing how to help coaches succeed and have coaches that don't have a ton going for them at the moment in those 2 sports.

If TOB has a winning season and lives up to some of the expectations we had going into last year then a LOT of pressure is taken off Yow to make a major hire in her first year in the job. I just hope that we don't lose Purcell over this, whether we succeed under Yow, or not - we're gonna still need the WPC to keep doing what it does so well.

Also the balancing the budget aspect could be a blessing for us. We've always brought in money and filled up C-F and the RBC well based on our team's successes, but never seemed to spend money for top coaches, and lost money due to poor management of funds.

a: no AD should be under pressure to make a hire in their first year just for the sake of making a hire. that is dumb.

b: whether purcell quits b/c he's pissed or becomes the AD, he's still not going to be the head of the wpc. given the choice of hiring purcell as AD or having him quit and hiring an AD with a record of success, i'll choose the latter.

Who said that? What I meant was basically that if Yow comes in and looks at the FB program then she'll know TOB is on a bit of a hot seat right now. If we have a losing a FB season again for the 4th straight year under TOB, then she would have to focus on making a HUGE hire not even a year into her tenure as NCSU AD and would have to divert focus away from other things in the department that she hopes to improve.

No one should be hoping right now that Yow has to make a major hire for the sake of putting her mark on NCSU, that is dumb.

Honestly. I'd rather have an experienced AD making a major coaching change in their first year at a new school than a brand new AD with no AD experience having to make that same change.

If we hired him, that would have given us an AD with zero experience anywhere and lost our fundraising abilities which is pretty much the only thing this abortion of an athletics program does right.

Tom O'Brien on the hire: http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/06/25/tom-obrien-knows-he-might-not-be-long-for-nc-state-job/

Quote :
"Speaking even before the Yow-to-NCSU rumors reached their boiling point Thursday night, head coach Tom O'Brien admitted that, with a new chancellor and new athletic director in the offing, he faces an uphill battle to retain his job if he doesn't turn the program around post haste.

"Certainly you get evaluated differently because it's not the people who brought you in, who did the research to bring you in," O'Brien told the Raleigh News & Observer.

"I don't think there's ever a make-or-break season. But the situation has changed. The chancellor I came here with and the athletic director I came here with are no longer here. Things have changed a lot.

"How that's going to affect our situation won't be solved until the chancellor and new AD decide what direction -- or if there's a new direction -- they want to go in."

O'Brien has finished with seven losses during each of his three seasons in Raleigh and, obviously, has never led the Wolfpack to a bowl game. As he embarks on his fourth year at the school, and given the abject mediocrity of his regime thus far, it may not have mattered who the AD or chancellor or anybody else was; their direction would've been very much pointing toward O'Brien's backside residing firmly on the hot seat entering the 2010 season.

[Writer's note: O'Brien has indeed led the Wolfpack to a postseason game, the 2008 PapaJohns.com Bowl. Which they lost. My apologies for the most egregious error.]"
