Only on the first side of this JN and there's already a ton of awesome percussion stuff and a Billy Joel reference.

Any one else into the new Gil Scott-Heron??? It kinda rules. He and Joanna Newsom are blurring the lines between music and poetry.

For the love of God, where can I find Ryan Gustafson's album from last year?

I've looked at Schoolkids, Offbeat and Bull City ... nothing.

I know I can order it from CDbaby or iTunes (yuck) or pick it up at a show; but where can I grab it locally?

Best bet would be CD Alley, because Drughorse is a CH thing and I've definitely heard it played on the stereo there while I've been shopping.

Also, got a sneak at Gayngs tonight...AWESOME.

the JoNew is definitely growing on me. the last track, "Does Not Suffice", reminds me of how Van Morrison's "Slim Slow Slider" ends.

No shit.

I checked Schoolkids once a while back, they didn't have it.

Now, I'm waiting on a friend to get it to me via jump drive. I figure I'll make it up to Mr. Gustafson with some covers for concerts.

Don't know if it's been posted yet, but The Appleseed Cast is reportedly putting out another album in late 2010 according to their new label, Graveface.

http://www.graveface.com/news.html

From the 11/23/09 blog entry:
Quote :
"Both The Appleseed Cast and Dreamend will have new full-length releases out via Graveface in late 2010."

Where in Charlotte? Amo's Southend? That venue is OK, but the few times I've been there, the staff have been unbelievably dickish. But, that seemed to be more a trend of Charlotte...

I love the new joanna newsom, but it really should've been released as one proper album with a "b-sides" album released later in the year. I don't agree with the reviews that say there aren't filler songs. In my opinion, a good deal of CD/ LP 2 is filler. With that said, my favorite tracks are Baby Birch, Easy, Does Not Suffice, Ribbon Bows, and In California.

I agree that the second disc is the weakest of the three, but I think it serves its purpose, and there are moments on the second disc I wouldn't want to be without.

With that said, I think arrangements like this

Quote :
"but it really should've been released as one proper album with a "b-sides" album released later in the year"

are AWFUL. B-sides are two or three leftover songs meant to go on the backs of singles, not an entire LP's worth of songs from the same sessions tossed on a disc with some tacked-on semblance of order or coherence. Have One On Me is a little bit of a wanderer, yes, but I'd much rather have it wander than hear all of the lulls slapped together and then sold to me as a real product six months from now.

i agree with this. could have been a really great album of 10-12 songs. although i still think there are some amazing moments on it. "81" and "Esme" are two of the prettiest songs i've heard

the timbre's not different, but her delivery is

also, the arrangements on Ys make it sound a little more otherworldly than it really is

the arrangements on this record frame it in a less outlandish laura nyro/joni mitchell light

I didn't like it at first, but just like the last one, it grew on me fast. But... for 4 years worth of work... yikes.

I was shocked that the reviews have been as favorable as they have been. I liked it, but wasn't sure how critics would receive it because of how mellow it is. Apparently it has won some folks over.

the next few months (March-May) are filled with a plethora of albums I am excited for. Should be great.

Also, anyone in here listen to the s/t Fang Island album I've heard a lot of buzz about on several sites this past week? I'm interested in checking it out and I ask here because the "recommended if you like" section of these reviews have made it look like something you guys would be into. IE vampire weekend, animal collective, portugal the man etc.

a couple links to mp3 streams from the album (haven't even listened to them myself yet tho):
"Daisy"

LOL

As I said, I hadn't listened to it at all myself, so I apologize if it is crappy.

Also, I saw Andrew W.K. mentioned in one review briefly and thought that was kind of odd given the other bands people were referencing but didn't know what to think of that hah.

it's not bad (at least "daisy" isn't), just kind of wacky

there are huge anthemic guitar lines that are very reminiscent of the stuff on the wolf

yeah, the first couple listens i was on the fence. my wife thought it sounded too much like a renaissance fair. they're actually playing near me tomorrow, and i've loved their live shows... but i don't think i can leave my wife with the newborn baby for the night.
