No, technically this is cheaper than an iPhone. Remember that you have to sign up for 2 years with the iPhone, versus no contract with the iPad. Figure out how much an unlocked, contract-free iPhone is.

^^ not necessarily true... this uses a custom tuned chip, which the iPhone/iPod Touch doesn't have yet.

An iphone 3gs 16gB without a contract is $599 from Apple. This tablet (with 3g) is $629 without a contract. Fail.

I posted this in the Chit Chat thread, but I'm actually serious, so I'll post it here too: I like this iPad idea. But I want them to make it so I can download textbooks instead of buying the physical book. If I can read a textbook on the iPad, write notes in the "margins" with your stylus, and highlight on screen, I will gladly pay you money to cut down on the ridiculous cost of law textbooks... and the ridiculous need to carry around 5 books a day. Textbook authors would like this too--especially if it cuts down the cost of their overhead, etc.

For those who are not eligible for an early upgrade or who wish to buy iPhone as a gift, the prices are $499 (8GB), $599 (16GB), or $699 (32GB)
from http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone?mco=MTAyNTQzMTI

that's not unlocked, but still...

Ah, OK. Didn't realize they sold them _that_ cheap. To be fair though, the hardware on this thing is better than an iPhone.

Can't wait to hear where this A4 cpu came from. Thought Apple learned it's lesson after abandoning the G4/G5 architecture. With ARM and Atom, this seems like a pretty risky move.

But damn, they hit the price point. They have a KILLER 3G proposition (affordable, no contract), and it's back compatible with the iPhone.

The only thing that could derail this train is how well that keyboard scales to a 10" experience.

But I'm in just to use this for an ebook reader

The problem with this is electronic copies are going to start out competitively priced with new publisher copies of books. The actual material cost of textbooks is cheap. The prices are inflated because of the used and online market. Now that the publisher know you are willing to pay inflated prices for new books, there is no incentive for them to bring cost down on electronic copies.

the most exciting part about this whole spiel, to me, was the new apple-designed chip which hopefully will make its way into the next iPhone. Seems like it delivers great battery life (10 hours of video, really?)

I'll put money down that both you guys will have one in the next year.

What did you want se7entythree? a clown shitting out an elephant? it's super thin, super performant (based on the demos), cheap as hell (an apple product that costs less than the competition???), and now has a complete content distribution system.

Oh, and a non-contract, OTA data service that is cheaper than anything else out there.

That's a shit ton of innovation.

reasonable speculation is saying it uses the ARM isa, considering its compatibility with iPod Touch apps.

PA Semi specialized in PPC before, but I don't see an 1Ghz PPC emulating with full speed the ARM in the iPhone 3GS.

It's an awesome, sexy piece of gadget but if even I can't justify buying one, I have my doubts that they'll sell too many of these things.

I could never see owning one of these on top of an iPhone + laptop.

No way no how.

a) "Oh, and a non-contract, OTA data service that is cheaper than anything else out there."
There are non-contract OTA data services out there, Cricket, $40/month for 3G no contracts, don't believe the shit Apple posts about $80/month for their 'competition'... chances are if you buy this for 3G service you don't care about the contract.... Verizon data-only UNLIMITED PLAN IS $30 and so much better 3G service.

b) "and now has a complete content distribution system"
What netbook or laptop doesn't have a complete content distribution system?

c) "cheap as hell"
uh, no, buy a touchscreen netbook w/ a 3G usb broadband card and it's pretty much the same thing.

I'd be onboard if they had like a modified version of OSX so you could run as standard OSX or in "Tablet" mode etc. Something like how Windows has standard windows and then you can put it into "Media Center" mode for all the specialized functions

Also, Having a tablet without stylus and handwriting input/recognition seems kind of weak after all this was built up.

what did i want? i wanted an OS update for my phone.

i would have liked to see a product that wowed me. the air was neat b/c it was the first thing to be so thin. thin isn't that exciting anymore. that's not cheap as hell imo.

i did not see a tablet device fitting into my life, and i was kinda hoping something about this would be so new and awesome that i would want one, but nothing like that happened.

i just want my OS update

Did they even mention HD playback? No digital video out? Not going to compete with netbooks in terms of a portable media center.

No Verizon doesn't. They may have more coverage in the middle of nowhere, but AT&T covers every major metropolitan area where most people live and their 3g is twice the speed of Verizons. I'd rather have fast 3g than slow 3g in areas I rarely ever go.

They desperately need to leave AT&T... don't know why any of those "X" million iPhone users would buy one of these to use on their AT&T network.

Quote :

i completely agree, again, nothing innovative, have you ever tethered your phone to your laptop? the iPad w/ 3G is exactly the same thing just integrated. this is too small a niche. i think the lenovo is the MUCH better option because then you could justify buying the HYBRID pc to REPLACE your laptop, not in addition to your laptop & phone.

Quote :

to each their own, to me (coverage >>> speed) as MOST apps don't use that much bandwidth, and the verizon 3G speeds are more than sufficient. beats service in "major" metropolitan areas only that are JAMMED because of the number of people on a piss-poor service. the speed is only seen in low-density metro areas

The problem isn't AT&T, its the iPhone. Sadly there isn't a carrier in the US that can handle that kind of data demand.

I find it humorous that this thread has started off similar to the iPhone thread way back when. Interesting to see how its evolved and peoples opinions have changed once they used the device and/or a hardware update was announced.

thumbs down.

- doesn’t support flash
- 64G max space
- no concurrent apps running
- It's nothing more than a giant iPod Touch.

The real winner:

http://www.google.com/finance?q=NYSE:T

thanks to apple fanboys who will pay $30 more dollars per month for a plan you already have which wont be allowed to be shared across devices…

considering the data usage these things are designed for and AT&T apparently being on-board with fairly aggressive pricing for the 3G data, I want to hear the justification for no tethering yet for the iPhone. They should offer the same $14.95/$29.95 plans (with no contract) for the 3Gs right now. There is no excuse not to anymore. (not that there was before)

For $630 + $15 /month, you have a 16GB netbook with 3G internet, and an IPS screen, AND 10 hour battery life. That's not bad at all.

The problem may not be AT&T (especially not in the Triangle), but having all the iPhones on one network seems like it would be a pain in the ass for any company. Wouldn't spreading it around a bit ease some of that network frustration?

Cricket is 10 bucks more, has terrible availability (no coverage in Seattle, San Fran, LA, Dallas, NY or Boston, no coverage at all in 19 states)
Verizon is $59.99 for 5gb a month of data access. the $30 plan is only for smartphones and ONLY when paired with a $30 voice plan.

This is CHEAP.

Last I checked, iTunes is the first distribution system for Apps, Music, Video, Games and Books. And it was just announced today. So, um, every netbook and laptop? And as we all well know, iTunes is a piece of garbage on non-OSX devices.

not in our (my work) case. we have 7 iphones. we are in rocky mount. there is jack shit for regular coverage out here. you'll sometimes get edge if you're in town and you hold your mouth just right. otherwise you're lucky if you get a signal of any kind. that is a provider coverage problem imo. it has nothing to do with the phone.

Pretty much. and Golovko is so on the money with his comment, exactly the same trend as the iPhone thread. Give it a year for the Apple train to roll, the market brainwashing to kick in, and suddenly everyone is asking how to jailbreak their new iPad

you're trying to justify an $800 device + $30/month on top of a smartphone & laptop.

again, if you have these two devices already, $800 + an additional $30/month IS NOT CHEAP!

iTunes is iTunes, you know it's not hardware specific, so yes, if it runs on a netbook/laptop it's the same exact delivery system.
