^I know what you mean. It seems like all of the reasonably priced Feathers are coming out of Singapore right now. Anything coming from that region of the world ships for $5, but it takes 2 weeks and sometimes more.

love feathers. They work wonderful with a medium weighted razor like my Merkur Classic.

I don't usually put them in my heavy Red Tip SS, i usually use the Red Personnas or Astras for that one.

Any of you guys tried the maca root shaving cream from the body shop? It's definitely a quality product, lightly scented and forms a very nice lather. I stock up when I catch the buy 2 get one free sale.

i smelled it in the store the other day and almost lost my lunch

sticking with TOBS for now...tried T&H and liked some of the sample pack scents...also have used creamo creme and it's pretty good stuff for a quick shave

^ that's really surprising, I've been really pleased with the product and it got some good reviews on B&B as well. My nasal palette would probably be a bit more discriminating if I had more exposure to the TOBS line.

Sitting on at least 80 Israeli Personnas in boxes of 5. I've made a permanent transition to Feather blades, so yeah, free razors to whoever wants to grab a few. Only catch is, you'll have to swing by my office in north raleigh to pick them up.

so i had to send my DE back to classicshaving.com because the metal started to corrode

thankfully, a few months ago I found an old gold-plated DE in an antique store, so I've been using that

they cut a lot closer than a standard close comb. You don't have to change your technique but you really have to have a good form or it can eat your face up. Especially the first few times. But they provide much closer shaves and you'll feel the difference once you've got it down pat.

but it would seem some of the allure here is "shaving like grandpa used to", and how today's common shaving tools and practices are inferior to those used a few decades back

yet there is excitement ITT about items called, for instance, "Taylor of Old Bond Street’s Lavender Shaving Creme"

was this really used in olden tymes? i have to think that grandpa would have called you a big dandy for using that and continued lathering up with kerosene or something. i just remember my grandfathers and have a hard time thinking that guys who fought in korea and WWII came home and used designer lavender shaving creme.

my guess is that it may have existed but was called something different.

^^you also have to remember that the designer items you are talking about are almost 100% british. They've been used for generations of men on that side of the pond. It's not that your grandfathers wouldn't use those types of products it's more likely that there was never an outlet to try or buy them. With the internet and global shipping the products are more readily available to american wet shavers today.

There are tons of items that are traditional and american wet shaving products that i guarantee your grandfather did use. Though they aren't as expensive or boutique they still have a long history and devout following. Some of these include Old Spice, Aqua Velva, and Pinaut/Clubman

Actually, I have a really heavy beard and I wear razors out really quick so when you're spending $2-3 a cartridge, it adds up quickly. Gillette Fusion cartridges are a bit over $3/ea. and Mach III's are over $2. Replacing those every 2 weeks (usually about 10 days for me) adds up pretty damn quickly. Add in a $5 can of shaving cream every 3-4 weeks and you're crazy if you don't think that you can EASILY spend $170 in 2 years shaving. Either that or you have the hair growth of a 12 year old.

this is why i got my brother a DE set for christmas...i certainly don't have this problem (i shave DE because i'm a girly girl and my face freaks out with ingrown hairs and razor rashes when i use the disposable cartridges), but he would wear out his cartridges pretty quickly, and hair would get stuck between the blades, making them useless

and the $170 figure is on the high end...you can do it for much less and still get a better shave than what you're getting with a cartridge

merkur HD 11c: $30 (one time)
200 derby blades: $15 (and this should last 3-4 years)
styptic pencil: $1 (one time)
witch hazel: $2 (bottle every 6 months on the low end, i'd say)
shaving kit (boar brush, soap, bowl): $10 (from wally world, and i actually think it's a GREAT starter set...assume you buy new soap every 6 months at $2/cake)
lotion of choice: $10 (per year, i guess...i use burt's bees since it doesn't cause me to break out and it's a whopping $8/bottle and i've had it for more than 2 years since i only use it on my face)

without getting fancy, you're looking at a ~$40 initial investment (things you won't need to replace) and about $25/year (blades, witch hazel, soap, lotion)

a year of cartridges alone, if you replace them every week and get them on sale for $2/each, costs you ~$100, which is more than TWO years of DE shaving and that doesn't even include shaving foam/gel or any aftershave/lotion

yes, you can turn DE shaving into an expensive hobby (fragranced witch hazel, premium soaps, new razor handles, premium lotions/aftershaves, badger brushes, gadgets), but for someone like me who switched because it was kinder to my face and offered a better shave overall, it's also MUCH less expensive over the course of a year, let alone lifetime

I hate shaving. If it weren't for society's messed up conception that clean shaven means professional, I wouldn't shave. Since I am in the last year of school, I feel the need to grow the longest/fullest beard I can. I feel that this is my last period of time for facial hair freedom.
