6if it wasn't for the fact that I live in Hawaii and the shipping would ge expen$ive, I would probably take you guys up on the trade deal...I've got about a four year supply of israel personnas
11/6/2009 1:43:38 AM
^I know what you mean. It seems like all of the reasonably priced Feathers are coming out of Singapore right now. Anything coming from that region of the world ships for $5, but it takes 2 weeks and sometimes more.
11/6/2009 2:09:42 AM
love feathers. They work wonderful with a medium weighted razor like my Merkur Classic. I don't usually put them in my heavy Red Tip SS, i usually use the Red Personnas or Astras for that one.
11/6/2009 8:12:06 AM
Any of you guys tried the maca root shaving cream from the body shop? It's definitely a quality product, lightly scented and forms a very nice lather. I stock up when I catch the buy 2 get one free sale.
11/6/2009 1:32:39 PM
i smelled it in the store the other day and almost lost my lunchsticking with TOBS for now...tried T&H and liked some of the sample pack scents...also have used creamo creme and it's pretty good stuff for a quick shave
11/10/2009 2:40:50 AM
^ that's really surprising, I've been really pleased with the product and it got some good reviews on B&B as well. My nasal palette would probably be a bit more discriminating if I had more exposure to the TOBS line.
11/11/2009 9:59:57 PM
Sitting on at least 80 Israeli Personnas in boxes of 5. I've made a permanent transition to Feather blades, so yeah, free razors to whoever wants to grab a few. Only catch is, you'll have to swing by my office in north raleigh to pick them up.
11/20/2009 2:48:53 PM
so i had to send my DE back to classicshaving.com because the metal started to corrodethankfully, a few months ago I found an old gold-plated DE in an antique store, so I've been using thatI asked the wife for a pretty awesome shaving mug made by http://www.sarabonnymanpottery.com/moss_scuttle.htm, so i will hopefully be getting that, as well as some Truefitt & Hill 1805 shaving creme and balm
12/20/2009 12:13:14 PM
I've been rocking the homebrewed scuttle using 2 ceramic dishes and a hot-pot. I've gotta say I don't love what the additional heat does to the lather.
12/20/2009 7:01:50 PM
My apologies it it's already been covered, but is there a place in Raleigh that sells straight razors?
12/20/2009 10:06:49 PM
just picked up a merkur HD 11cit's the open-comb version of the ever-popular 34ci like the look of the 11c better $28 FS from eBay
12/21/2009 9:57:35 PM
that looks like it has diamonds on it, or some shit. did you get an iced-out razor, quaggy?
12/21/2009 10:27:17 PM
yeah, buddy...you know how i roll
12/22/2009 7:40:32 AM
open-comb should add a whole new level to your DE shaving experience. Enjoy it!
12/22/2009 8:24:52 AM
whole new level like what?
12/22/2009 7:42:22 PM
they cut a lot closer than a standard close comb. You don't have to change your technique but you really have to have a good form or it can eat your face up. Especially the first few times. But they provide much closer shaves and you'll feel the difference once you've got it down pat.
12/22/2009 8:14:08 PM
agree with Jeepinmy corroded one is gone, and I had to use an antique open comb for the past few weeks...and it's pretty good...except for the crack in the bottom and top keeping the weight falling offneed to visit the antique stores again
12/23/2009 10:32:24 PM
didn't get the moss scuttle for christmas, so I ordered it myself. stoked about it!also, I guess I didn't tell the wife that I wanted 1805...I only told you guys...and since you guys didn't send it, the wife got me some Trafalgar scented shaving creme and balm from T&H. smells great!
12/27/2009 1:05:05 PM
1805 is amazing.
12/27/2009 4:37:32 PM
what is this shit?seriously...I just, you know...fucking shave...what's wrong with you people?
12/27/2009 4:54:37 PM
nastoute, with what do you shave?
12/27/2009 5:48:59 PM
this thread turns me on mmm.... men
12/27/2009 5:59:17 PM
hey beg...you should check this blog article out...it's about shaving like a girl (http://shaveblog.com/?p=298)
12/27/2009 6:05:27 PM
helpful reminder that men don't shave
12/27/2009 6:18:44 PM
I saw where Burt's Bees was mentioned on the previous page. I can personally vouch for the awesomeness of the Burt's Bees After Shave. I've read most everything posted and signed up on B&B. I am a little overwhelmed as to what to choose for a n00b in terms of DE razors.
12/27/2009 7:24:16 PM
12/27/2009 7:53:51 PM
^ really? That's actually a bit less than what I used to spend in 2 years when using Mach3's & the like. I've actually spent less (MUCH less) than that & get closer shaves & no more ingrown hairs.
12/27/2009 11:36:11 PM
i keep seeing this thread bttt'd so i thought i'd drop in.I too shave with a DE. 1979 vintage razor, got it off ebay about 5 years ago and i've used it ever since.
12/27/2009 11:54:54 PM
12/28/2009 2:28:04 AM
got a handmade scuttle for christmas. excited about that.
12/28/2009 8:51:51 AM
okay i swear to sweet baby jesus that i'm not trying to troll herebut it would seem some of the allure here is "shaving like grandpa used to", and how today's common shaving tools and practices are inferior to those used a few decades backyet there is excitement ITT about items called, for instance, "Taylor of Old Bond Street’s Lavender Shaving Creme"was this really used in olden tymes? i have to think that grandpa would have called you a big dandy for using that and continued lathering up with kerosene or something. i just remember my grandfathers and have a hard time thinking that guys who fought in korea and WWII came home and used designer lavender shaving creme. my guess is that it may have existed but was called something different.
12/28/2009 9:07:55 AM
Taylor of Old Bond Street has been around a while. http://www.tayloroldbondst.co.uk/tradition.htmlAs has Truefitt & Hill. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truefitt_&_HillIt's called Wet-Shaving. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ShavingBack in the day it was called "shaving". Now it's called "traditional shaving" because of the proliferation of disposable safety razors (Mach3, Schick Quattro, etc.), along with a desire of a growing number of men to return to the more comfortable, practical, and economical way of shaving.
12/28/2009 6:04:11 PM
^^you also have to remember that the designer items you are talking about are almost 100% british. They've been used for generations of men on that side of the pond. It's not that your grandfathers wouldn't use those types of products it's more likely that there was never an outlet to try or buy them. With the internet and global shipping the products are more readily available to american wet shavers today. There are tons of items that are traditional and american wet shaving products that i guarantee your grandfather did use. Though they aren't as expensive or boutique they still have a long history and devout following. Some of these include Old Spice, Aqua Velva, and Pinaut/Clubman
12/28/2009 7:12:50 PM
and the Pinaut/Clubman is as preferable to some guys as the brit stuff...that's just the stuff I picked when I startedgive it a try and you'll be hooked
12/28/2009 8:48:08 PM
been shaving with my grandpa's old Gillette DE, and brush/set for about a week now.....gotta say i llove it...
1/5/2010 9:49:07 PM
Got a whole set of sandalwood preshave oil/shaving cream/aftershave over the holidays.Loving it so far.
1/6/2010 12:00:47 AM
1/6/2010 12:08:57 AM
Actually, I have a really heavy beard and I wear razors out really quick so when you're spending $2-3 a cartridge, it adds up quickly. Gillette Fusion cartridges are a bit over $3/ea. and Mach III's are over $2. Replacing those every 2 weeks (usually about 10 days for me) adds up pretty damn quickly. Add in a $5 can of shaving cream every 3-4 weeks and you're crazy if you don't think that you can EASILY spend $170 in 2 years shaving. Either that or you have the hair growth of a 12 year old.

I got to my folks house in FL and talked with my dad and aunt about DE'ing, and today my dad and I are going to check out a barber supply store that sells gear and soaps.Me? I'm a brit stuff guy, simply because that's what I used when I started back in August, and now I like the products.
1/11/2010 10:51:13 AM
okay...wow...nothing found at the barber supply store, so dad and I headed to an antique shop and found...wait for it....FIVE gillette's for $4 a piece!!!!111boiling them all now and will hit up the scrubbing bubbles after...then I'm going to give my dad one of them (the heavier adjustable with a long handle)dang...I'm so stoked about this find....
1/11/2010 3:41:11 PM
btt...just ordered some TABAC shaving soap, aftershave, and deoderant...excited!
2/10/2010 7:04:27 PM
^^pics if you still have them
2/10/2010 7:06:51 PM
2/10/2010 7:17:32 PM
Does everyone here use DE razors? Is there anyone else besides me who uses a straight razor?I've got no one to talk to....
2/10/2010 8:55:38 PM
lol yeah i think we're all going the DE route
2/10/2010 9:00:45 PM
^^ I'd love to get on board with a cut-throat, I just lack the intestinal fortitude to do so.
2/12/2010 10:09:47 PM
yeah, it takes more of a man to use DE than to use cartridges, but even MORE of a man to go straight-edge...i'm not there, yet
2/13/2010 8:33:40 AM
if any of you guys like hard soaps you should try the mama bear soapshttp://mamabearssoaps.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1
2/13/2010 12:00:37 PM
Ernie's post on page 1 made LOL. I hate shaving. If it weren't for society's messed up conception that clean shaven means professional, I wouldn't shave. Since I am in the last year of school, I feel the need to grow the longest/fullest beard I can. I feel that this is my last period of time for facial hair freedom.
