Went to OI on Tuesday after work with plans to fish Wed and Tuesday. Wed - After some tense moments running through the crack we get to the bar and its standing straight up. 8+ with about 4 secs in between outgoing tide on a NE wind makes the inlet sporty. We plow through and its like a bathtub on the other side. We fished with the fleet and had a puppy YFT hit the flat line right off the bat but we threw him back. No more knockdowns the rest of the day except for a gaffer we hooked up late. We ended up trolling north to no avail. Thursday - No inlet problems and it was flat calm so we ran 40 miles in about an hour and half. I looked at the Sat shots and it looked like there was a hard break farther south than yesterday. We head that way and sure enough there is a temp break with grass on it. We fished it all day either trolling or bailing and ended up with 25 Mahi's. Ran back in an hour and I was able to sleep the whole time In other news... I can't make the bahamas trip next week They changed the law June 1 about entering the country. (before June 1, if entering by boat you could enter with a drivers license, now its passport only and I can't/couldn't get it turned around in time.)[Edited on June 26, 2009 at 12:06 PM. back from a week in belhaven.....wore out pretty much everything- flounder, red drum, specks, striper....and lots of skates lol. went offshore out of morehead one day and pulled in several mahi. for a first time saltwater trip, i doubt it couldve gone any better.
6/28/2009 3:27:09 PM
Second trip out this year, and it was very similar to the first. Had a first-timer onboard so we let him reel in most of the fish.Headed out of Masonboro yesterday morning and fished 30 miles offshore until about 1 PM. Smooth ride out and even smoother in. 3 mahi, 4 kings, 1 cuda, and we dropped down on bottom for a bit and I broke my trevala (indestructible?) rod on something big down there, and no, it wasn't hung...Picture up in the gallery...can't link it now for some reason...bah.[Edited on June 29, 2009 at 2:16 PM. Red x.
6/29/2009 2:10:23 PM
bought a pole spear with a paralyzer tip- holy shit this thing is fun.
6/29/2009 4:43:56 PM
the hell you gonna do w/ that stankin ass barracuda?
6/29/2009 5:29:32 PM
They're actually supposed to be pretty good.
6/29/2009 5:36:12 PM
every one i ever caught smelled like the south end of a north-bound cow
6/29/2009 5:37:58 PM
It smelled awful and I don't normally gaff them, but my cousin wanted to keep it...
6/29/2009 11:39:32 PM
so pops informed me last night that he's going after trout/drum/flounder w/ a friend of his on the other guy's boat friday and i am approved to take my dad's boat and tag along. i thought deemarie was off work and would go, but she has to work. sucker.so now i might try to find somebody to split some gas
6/30/2009 8:42:58 AM
the weatherman missed it bad friday. it was windy as hell. we couldn't get out in the river due to 2' swells. ended up staying in the creek and fishing from 5:30 am to 11 am.few small trout. few small flounder. i caught a 22" puppy drum that was delicious in a stew today at granny's. that joker was a fun fight on my little cabo.
7/5/2009 10:33:39 PM
Goin to morehead this weekend....No boat, so i'm gonna try fishing creeks. I'm somewhat of a saltwater n00b, but from what I've read, I'll be mainly trying to catch spec trout, flounder and drum....What are some good areas to fish around there this time of year? Also, am I best to go with live bait, or jigs/spoons/crankbaits?
7/7/2009 2:56:03 PM
ain't many places you can go without a boat[Edited on July 7, 2009 at 2:59 PM. Reason : i'd fish soft plastics. berkeley gulp! is great][Edited on July 7, 2009 at 3:01 PM. Reason : soft plastics are cheap and versatile. all of those species will hit them.]
7/7/2009 2:58:20 PM
^We'll be staying about 1/2 mile west of the downtown area....Seems like there's alot of water frontage running parallel to us....none of that worth a try?
7/7/2009 3:05:08 PM
think i'll steal a friends boat and hit up oak island tomorrow.[Edited on July 7, 2009 at 3:07 PM. Reason : ]

i have no idea where you're talking about, but it's most likely private property you could try by the beaufort drawbridge or maybe on the radio island side of the morehead city bridge (across from the phosphate plant), but those places kinda blow.if i wasn't busy this weekend, i'd haul a boat down there and take you for a small fee.
7/7/2009 3:08:58 PM
There are a couple of access points that aren't private....and we have a friend that lives in a houseboat docked at one of the marinas, not sure if they frown on fishing at the docks tho (or if it's even worth fishing there).Maybe I'll get lucky.
7/7/2009 3:12:52 PM
if there are docks nearby, go find some fiddler crabs, small urchins, or sand fleas from the beach. fish them w/ a wire leader right against the dock pilings. sheephead hang out there. i've caught a bunch right up in taylor's creek (the beaufort waterfront). folks tend to get pissed if you're tying your boat up to their empty dock and fishing, though.
7/7/2009 3:16:13 PM
did some fishing before the 4th. hooked a 32" bluefish. put up a good fight.
7/7/2009 3:43:15 PM
what kinda tackle? i can't see the pic at work.i caught a bunch of 30"+ blues light lining on some really light spinning tackle to kill time while we were cobia fishing in the hook once. that was a blast.
7/7/2009 3:45:30 PM
Okuma Convector on a light stand-up rod with 25 lb test drifting a bottom rig with cut pinfish. I wasn't really targeting blues, but i wasn't complaining when i hooked up either
7/7/2009 3:47:41 PM
what were you targeting? and where?
7/7/2009 3:54:18 PM
Out at the Radio Island Jetty. We drifted some lines back off the stern and then dropped some on the bottom. Must have pulled up an easy 2 dozen seabass and a few good sized doormats. On a related note, I went spearfishing yesterday at the Cape. Couldn't see a damn thing. Did manage to spear a decent sized triggerfish though
7/9/2009 12:38:15 PM
the one on by that concrete landing zone across from the CG station?
7/9/2009 12:39:18 PM
I've been fishing on Folly Beach Pier about twice a week, every now and then i'll catch something good (I caught a decent king mackerel) but i've been catching mostly tiny ass blue
7/9/2009 12:41:51 PM
how did you catch the king?
7/9/2009 12:43:19 PM
^^^ that's the one. spearfishing is great there too, especially at low tide.[Edited on July 9, 2009 at 12:43 PM. Reason : ^]
7/9/2009 12:43:30 PM
trout fishing is also great there
7/9/2009 12:44:08 PM
I got really lucky considering I mostly fish surf. I jerked my line up to the surface to check my bait, saw that it was empty and started reeling it in (not that fast) and I jigged it right on its belly.
7/9/2009 12:46:23 PM
haha it was a king and not a big spanish, right?and that's some crazy luck
7/9/2009 12:47:07 PM
Yeah it was definitely a king, the dorsal was pretty narrow and pointy. I caught it like dead center of the belly both radially and axially if that makes any sense. It's almost like a mermaid put it on my line for shits and giggles.
7/9/2009 12:49:07 PM
anybody wanna go on the canoe tomorrow evening after work?
7/9/2009 7:47:47 PM

fishing in a tournament this afternoon with my cousin at Harris. Any tips or advice?
7/11/2009 11:53:02 AM
here is my advice- CATCH SOME FISHES!!!nah, I don't know anything about fishing out there (although I have heard it can be good earlier and later in the year because of the nuclear plant warming it up)what is the tournament for?oh, and goodluck!
7/11/2009 11:59:57 AM
This was caught in the lake down the street from me
7/11/2009 12:21:13 PM
haha I only have one pole set up for freshwater that I think could handle that...and we never end up using it when we go out (it really could be used for a shore fishing pole)
7/11/2009 12:30:57 PM
Ocracoke all week starting tomorrow! The bf is already down there, caught a mess of flounders today. Hoping for some good weather so we can go offshore!
7/11/2009 12:33:18 PM
some type of tournament at Harris they have once a month. my cousin says it is on a saturday and it is a partner tournament ($45 entry fee)...prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place... he won 3rd place by himself last month, figured he would invite me. i'll probably be bad luck
7/11/2009 12:41:10 PM
^^^ Yeah I'm pretty sure that bass would snap the rod in our house like a twig Here's the story on it: http://sports.espn.go.com/outdoors/bassmaster/news/story?page=b_BigBass_record_Japan_20090702
7/11/2009 12:43:32 PM
first time out in harris yesterday for that bass tournament...it was a really nice day. my cousin and I caught 7 bass and 1 bowfishunfortunately only 2 of the bass were "keepers" for the tournament. the other 5 were nice bass but they were "slots" so we had to throw them back.I have a picture of the 19" I caught (slot), but waiting on my cousin to send it to me.
7/12/2009 9:11:13 AM
caught 2 keeper seabass. crab pots are doing really well.going to the RI jetty friday to spearfish and collect stone crab claws.
7/13/2009 2:12:06 PM
I have a Berkeley fly rod I'll let go for $cheap if anyone wants to give fly fishing a try. I bought it used and have never even put a reel on it myself, but it's in really good condition and looks pretty much new. $5 or some cheap liquor and it's yours just to get it out of my way.
7/13/2009 2:48:17 PM
what weight is it?
7/13/2009 2:49:25 PM
I don't know...I don't have it here in Raleigh. I'll bring it back this weekend. It's pretty short for a fly rod. Separates into 2 pieces, has a nice cork handle.[Edited on July 13, 2009 at 3:17 PM. Reason : l]
7/13/2009 3:16:57 PM
i want a very light cheap one to put one of those weird ultralight reels on for crappie fishingit's like a push-button spincast reel, but it goes under the rod. example:[Edited on July 13, 2009 at 3:23 PM. Reason : gf]
7/13/2009 3:18:14 PM
I think it would actually be perfect for that, but I'll let you decide. It's short for a fly rod, but long for a normal caster. I'll bring it back to Raleigh with me this weekend.[Edited on July 13, 2009 at 9:12 PM. Reason : l]
