It seems to me like we are at or very close to "last resort" area. If there is a run on commercial banks, shit will get real ugly.
9/29/2008 2:53:03 PM
But fearmongering works. It's the time-tested way to convince folks to accept your bullshit.
9/29/2008 2:53:51 PM
^True, there is fearmongering going both ways right now.Neither scenario (taxpayer-funded 700 B bailout vs financial meltdown) is particularly pretty.[Edited on September 29, 2008 at 2:55 PM. Reason : 2]

This is about the point where Bush asks for an emergency expansion of power and an open-ended extension of his term until he defeats this grave threat to our way of life. And when I say "asks for", I mean "coerces congress with the threat of imprisonment" [Edited on September 29, 2008 at 3:00 PM. Reason : 2]

I can see some bravery in standing up for this unpopular bill to try to fix a problem, and some bravery in standing against a bill that was being crammed down people's throats despite the problems it had. I don't care about blaming people one way or the other, I'd just like to see the next try come along reasonably soon and be built with the average person in mind while restoring liquidity to the market.

^^These are investment banks failing, not the banks who handle your checking (for the most part). And if those banks ever do go down, the FDIC exists to insure your deposits.[Edited on September 29, 2008 at 3:36 PM. Reason : for the most part]

Looking at this rationally, there are far, far better ways to spend $700B. Things that can get the economy back on the right track much sooner than prolonging the certain deaths of banks I don't give a shit about.

aha touche. The point is that if there is a run on commercial banks and they can't get a loan from other banks or the government, then they will shut down everything, including YOUR bank account, and hope that the government can fix it.
9/29/2008 3:52:45 PM
We'd better all make bank runs immediately. That's the only solution.
9/29/2008 3:54:26 PM
are you serious golden?
9/29/2008 4:00:09 PM
^^^Ah, you're asking how long until there's a temporary spending freeze on accounts... My guess is that it won't get to that stage. Granted, it could, if the government chooses to do nothing whatsoever.... but voting down the bailout is not equivalent to voting for inaction. It was a vote against panic and foolishness. There will be (and already have been) new plans to come out of the woodworks, and I'll be very surprised if at least one of them doesn't get approved. And hopefully none of them will involve throwing $700 billion around for no better reason than "We just wanted to choose a really large number."Assuming that nothing at all gets approved, we're still in better shape than we would be if this bailout plan had passed.[Edited on September 29, 2008 at 4:00 PM.
