Like last year they will play the game under normal rules (minus kickoffs and hitting the QB) which includes stopping the clock. For the second half, so that they don't have to run as many plays giving more of a chance for someone to get injured, they will just let the clock run. Also a lot of programs do this so that the fans that are now starting to get bored don't have to wait as long for the game to end.

Southern Pigskin ACC Predictions

Atlantic Division

1. Clemson - On paper, the Tigers have perhaps the best team they have had since their 1988 bunch that won the ACC Championship and defeated Oklahoma in the Citrus Bowl. Clemson has a talented, veteran signal caller, elite athletes at the skill positions (see Davis and Spiller) and a defense that is aggressive and attacking. The Tigers have gone 4-3 in November the last two seasons. To make it to Tampa, Clemson will have to play well the last few weeks of the year.

2. Wake Forest - It's time to recognize this program as a national one. After winning the ACC Championship in 2006, the Demon Deacons won nine games for an encore and defeated Big East runner-up Connecticut by two touchdowns in the Meineke Car Care Bowl last season. Back is quarterback Riley Skinner, '07 ACC Rookie of the Year Josh Allen at tailback and a veteran defense led by All-American Alphonso Smith at cornerback.

3. Florida State - Improvement will be expected from the Seminoles as they enter their second season under their revamped coaching staff. Florida State has gone 14-12 the past two seasons, but has a nice core of young talent and a very favorable schedule compared to years past. Suspensions of a significant portion of the team will carry through the first four games, including a key league clash with Wake Forest.

4. Maryland - The Terrapins will boast one of the most experienced offenses in the ACC, a unit led by five returning starters on the offensive front. Quarterback Chris Turner and receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey are an emerging pass-catch combination. Key playmakers must be replaced on defense, but this is the type of team that head coach Ralph Friedgen can do good things with.

5. NC State - It's safe to assume this program will take a step forward as the Wolfpack continue to grow under former Boston College coach Tom O'Brien. An influx of young talent on both sides of the football will be provide a boost. Jamelle Eugene, Andre Brown and Toney Baker provide great depth at tailback.

6. Boston College - This will be an entirely new team on offense: no Matt Ryan, Andre Callender, L.V. Whitworth, Kevin Challenger or Gosder Cherilus. The same can be said on defense with Jolonn Dunbar, DeJuan Triblle and Jamie Silva now gone, though linebacker Brian Toal returns from injury. This team lost a devasting amount of veteran leadership and experience.


Coastal Division

1. Virginia Tech - You have to like the experience at quarterback with Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor returning. Both signal callers have plenty of positives they bring to the offense. A year older and wiser, the offensive line should be stronger. Running back Brandon Ore, who recently left the team, must be replaced. Yes, the Hokies lost a tremendous amount of NFL talent from their defense. That said, Bud Foster's units always reload.

2. Miami - The baby Hurricanes will be one of the youngest teams in the ACC, but this is a squad loaded with with athletes. While the quarterback position is unsettled, the backfield is well-stocked with Javarris James and Graig Cooper. The defense will benefit from the return of safety Anthony Reddick from an ACL injury. Randy Shannon has been recruiting south Florida as well as any Miami coach has. This team has as much young talent as any in the nation.

3. Georgia Tech - It will be a transition season for the Yellow Jackets who will adopt a completely new style under former Navy coach Paul Johnson. Fret not for Georgia Tech, however. Paul Johnson wins wherever he goes. Josh Nesbitt will likely be the point-man for the new option-offense. His physical skills are more than suitable for such a role. He and big-back Jonathan Dwyer could thrive. There are some holes on defense, but Tech will have one of the top front lines in the league.

4. North Carolina - There is a lot of optimism surrounding this program and rightfully so. Butch Davis will have a talented, experienced group ready to make a run up the ACC standings. Quarterback T.J. Yates has excellent targets, including veterans Hakeem Nicks and Brandon Tate. The defense should see considerable improvement in the defensive backfield especially. Davis has recruiting extremely well during his tenure in Chapel Hill and has some nice young talent now ready to play.

5. Virginia - After earning a Gator Bowl bid in 2007, Al Groh and company have some retooling to do in 2008. Gone is All-American Chris Long at defensive end, last year's leader of the Cavaliers. On offense, starting quarterback Jameel Sewell has been dismissed from the team. Talented sophomore Peter Lalich is now the man. Tailbacks Mikell Simpson and Cedric Peerman do provide great depth in the backfield. In Long and Branden Albert, the offensive and defensive lines will both lose first round picks to the NFL Draft.

6. Duke - The arrival of David Cutcliffe as the new head coach has brought some credibility to the Duke program. Cutcliffe won ten games as an SEC head coach at Ole Miss and is an offensive mastermind. The Blue Devil offense will have the premier pass-catch tandem in the ACC: quarterback Thaddeus Lewis and receiver Eron Riley. Developing depth on the offensive line and on defense will be key.

Have you seen UNC's schedule for this year? It actually seems fairly easy. I'm tired of The Coastal Division always seeming to be easier than the Atlantic. I could easily see them winning 7 games. It doesn't seem like it would be that good of an accomplishment though looking at that schedule. My predictions below.

Nov. 29 @ Duke - W (always seem to pull this one out no matter how much they suck. case in point last year's game)

I think that if we get decent quarterback play and solid defense from our inexperienced guys, we can surprise a few people. We've got a good group of HB, WR, TE, and a nice DL so hopefully the rest of the team can step in up. Of course, we've had this same situation in the past couple of years and it hasn't payed off, but I have a good feelin' about this year

Some Nebraska fans paying $95 for spring game

LINCOLN, Neb. - The week of the sold-out Bruce Springsteen concert in Omaha last month, you could call a local ticket broker and pay $39 for a seat.

For Saturday's sold-out Nebraska spring football game, that broker is getting $95 a ticket.

"I'm not going to be one to judge the craziness of Nebraska football fans," Ticket Express owner Chad Carr said. "The weird thing about this game, I can't keep tickets in stock."

This, remember, is not a real game. It's a scrimmage.

Nebraska isn't the only place where football craziness exists in the spring.

Alabama had 78,200 folks turn out for its spring game last weekend. This after a college football-record spring game crowd of 92,138 showed up in 2007 to see first-year coach Nick Saban lead the Crimson Tide through the glorified scrimmage.

"We weren't prepared for that overwhelming response," Alabama athletic marketing director Jennifer Martin said. "You just never believe that many people are going to come to a practice."

Admission is free at Alabama. Nebraska has charged for decades, but it cost only $3 back when Tom Osborne was coaching national championship teams in the mid-1990s.

The spring thing started to take off in 2004 when Bill Callahan's West Coast offense rekindled enthusiasm among fans who were hungry to see a program makeover. The school set its spring record attendance of 63,416 in 2005. The count slipped to 57,415 in 2006 and 54,288 last year.

After last fall's 5-7 record marked the second losing season in four years and led to Callahan's firing, the Husker faithful are primed to see what new coach Bo Pelini has in store.

"We didn't have to do a whole lot of marketing or advertising. It pretty much sold itself," said Nebraska athletic marketing director Corrie Sears. "It's our fans being excited about the new era with Tom Osborne back (as athletic director) and Bo Pelini."

Spring fever strikes other places, but to a lesser degree. A throng of 61,000 turned out for Florida's nationally televised game last Saturday. But attendance was "just" 33,624 for defending national champion LSU and 23,306 at Oklahoma.

"What we have here is very special," Sears said, "and what we have are very passionate fans. The spring game is becoming more of an event, and we're treating it more like a real game for our fans."

The Cornhuskers sold reserved seats for the first time this year, at $10 apiece. General admission costs $8. Only 65,000 tickets were made available at 81,000-seat Memorial Stadium. The remaining 16,000 were held back for students and faculty, kids who promise to take the "Drug Free Pledge" on the field at halftime, former players, a horde of prospective recruits and other guests.

The athletic department opened spring game sales Feb. 6, and 22,700 tickets were sold on the first day. That included 5,800 online orders the first hour. The game was declared a sellout April 9.

In the past few days, listings for tickets have shown up on the online auction site eBay, and the phones have been ringing at Ticket Express.

"We've never seen anything like this before," Carr said.

Ticket Express is charging $95 for a $10 reserved seat. That is more than its customers would pay this week for a regular-season ticket to see the Huskers face New Mexico State ($69), Baylor ($85) and Colorado ($85).

It would cost only $4 more ($99) for a ticket to see the Huskers play defending Big 12 North champion Missouri.

Carr is almost apologetic about his spring game price. But he said he has had to pay more than face value for those tickets, which come from fans looking to make a buck on the secondary market.

Before the game sold out, Ticket Express was selling reserved seats for $25 to $35 to people who were willing to pay a premium for better seats.

Two years ago, the first year Ticket Express sold spring game tickets, Carr lost money. Now he's getting $85 over face value for a reserved seat. General admission tickets, by the way, are going for $65.

"We don't like being at that price point because we don't feel that is a good value," Carr said. "However, if somebody wants to pay it, we're not going to be the judge of whether that person feels it's a good value. For them, maybe it is."
