We are looking at heading out to Snowshoe here in March. The only place I have really stayed is the Top of the World/Mtn w/e. We are looking to get a cabin this year. Does anyone know of cabins that are in decent locations up there for good prices?

sNuw, what are you going to be doing at Heavenly out of curiosity?

I'd love to try and get up there again once more before season's end but it's looking less and less likely by the day...

after taking last weekend off, i was back to skiing at Stevens Pass today. Came within a foot of a HEAD-ON collision at high speed (like, i'm sure there would've been all sorts of major injuries). nobody really did anything wrong to set it up--it was just a freak circumstance.

So with all of that experience you've never been on a bowl, or areas where multiple trails converge?

you'd have to be pretty unaware of your surroundings to do that on a bowl!

this was more of the trail merge sitution. i was going down a trail, and another trail split off to the right. we were night skiing, and there weren't many people at all out, so i was hauling ass. well, I started down the 2nd trail to the right, then ripped back up the side to the first trail. The other guy, as best as I can figure, skiied past where you'd normally turn off for the 2nd trail, then turned back around to go back down the side trail, kinda skiing across the slope.

well, when I see him, we are headed straight at each other. i'm already turning left to pop back up the side of the slope, so I figure I can just float that turn wide and pass by him on the right. He appeared to completely panic and freeze up--I never saw him take any evasive action at all. Well, it soon appears that we're going to hit each other, and hard. I didn't think I could avoid the collision, so I made a last second attempt to scrub as much speed as I could, and at the last second just bailed out to the side. I think I missed him by about a foot as I went sliding by, which is what my buddy skiing behind me said it looked like to him.

i have no doubt that would've been my worst skiing crash ever...we would've both been hurt badly, i'm sure.

I've been a skier for 21 years, but had never gone out west until this past week. As an east coast skier I've always wondered if I was able to handle the rough stuff in the Rockies. After spending 3 days at Breckenridge and Copper Mtns the answer is YES! haha

Damn I loved those mtns. At breckenridge I made sure to climb up the extra 160 vertical feet to get to the top of Peak 8. Amazing snow up there. At Copper I rode the snow cat up to the ridge and hiked 25 minutes to Tucker Peak, then proceeded to ski down through the glades. Never seen so much powder in my life!

It snowed every day I was there, and the conditions were tip top. I can't wait to hit some bowls again. And lucky for me I'm going to Vail in on March 8th

oh, dude, i didn't know that you'd never skiied out west.

it's not even comparable, is it?

i didn't get to ski this weekend...hopefully get a day (or two) in mid-week if I can find anyone else to go (I can't fly because they had to order me a new parachute harness, and I've done everything else I can do at work for the time being)

The first time I went to Tahoe I asked myself the same question and the answer was a clearcut NO! But I can handle it now since I've gone 10-12 times now... I'm not going to be able to go again this season though unfortunately...

some friends are driving up to mammoth again this week... think i'm going to pass though. ends up costing like $500 for 2 days of skiing. tough to do that more than once per season when i can make a day trip to big bear and ski for $40.

^^how in the HELL does it cost you that much for a weekend.

Also, I've heard skiing in CA ain't that great b/c its too crowded, is that the case? (then again I'm sure it beats skiing in NYC, which is lower elevation AND crowded, lol)

^^ depends. I went right before New Years and it was shoulder to shoulder.. but Heavenly on a random weekend in January or February was great... PERFECT conditions/weather and not too crowded.

I imagine the SoCal "resorts" are packed because the times the conditions are great every skiier/snowboarder from LA (which is 3x the size of the NorCal area population wise) goes...

lodging for 3 nights ~$150
2 days lift tickets ~$150
gas driving to mammoth ~$40
food and alcohol ~$60-100

so at least $400 anyways.

where as a a day trip to big bear is a $41 lift ticket and about $15 in gas.

the CA parks are definitely crowded on weekends, i try to go on weekdays if possible. big bear is definitely more a beginner area, since all the socal people go there to try skiing/boarding for the first time. while mammoth gets crowded, its more of an older, season pass crowd that leaves by lunch.

Me and 5 of my buddies all went out to snowboard (1 skier) at Winterplace last weekend. 3 of us including me are pretty noobish at it, but the conditions were pretty good especially friday night.

One of my friends who is quite a bit better then me tried to ride a rail at the terrain park and face planted into it, which looked alot worse then it actually was.

^^^i don't really drink at home, and i probably spend like $20 on food over 3 days since we don't really go out to eat.

just heard that a bunch of people who were going to mammoth backed out last minute... leaving the 10 person cabin with like 2 people in it. they all paid though. so basically i was asked to go with free lodging. seriously considering going now...

^^ Dave Leisenring and I (and I think John Meade) skiied the SLC area during spring break one time, and it was fine.

if you're worried, go to Jackson or something.

One of my roommates and I are thinking about taking the week off from skiing and renting a couple of snowmobiles for the day on saturday.

i live in Denver, go up every weekend....
my wife & I have a pass that includes Winter Park, Mary Jane & Copper.

i was actually at Breckenridge & Copper last weekend.

first year boarding out west and i have to say i love it! we've had some of the best snow and it's been consistent... going to Taos Ski Valley late March after they start allowing snowboarders...

LOVE IT!

i have to say, living here even just one season has made me a snow snob! and i don't even live in Telluride! southeast skiing just doesn't compare... the closest is probably vermont skiing

hell, even Washington State doesn't compare (although it's still WAY better than southeast/mid-atlantic. prob better than new england, too, but i've never skiied there).

Duke, I'm not worried that much. Plus, I'm not going to another area. The cabing we're renting for dirt cheap through a friend of a friend ($25/night/person) is in Summit County.

Vermont skiing similar to CO skiing in a few ways. Good snow coverage and glade runs. However, the mountains aren't as tall (obviously) so the runs are nowhere near as long. Also, from my limited experience its considerably colder in Vermont on average. Of course, the coldest day I've ever spent skiing was at Snowshoe (-1 actual, -40 wind chill). For some reason the drier air out west doesn't feel as cold. I hardly felt like I needed gloves when outside in 25 degree weather (not skiing, mind you).
