welcome to college. you are no longer the man, the world no longer revolves around you, and no one gives a shit about you. learn that, and you'll be golden.

Smoke pot in moderation. A pot head in high school may smoke a few times a week while a pot head in college will smoke at least 4 times a day. That much pot smoking is a waste of money and will keep you from involving yourself in some of the more outward social experiences you would otherwise have at college. Smoke no more than 3 times a week and only at parties or with your friends. If you fail to follow this advice YOU WILL SPEND MORE TIME STONED IN A DIMLY LIT ROOM WITH YOUR FRIENDS THAN MEETING AND HAVING SEX WITH CHICS and it'll be years before you realize how hot, abundant and willing the chics really were at the time. you have all your life to smoke as much pot as you want.

If you've been going out with a girl for a few weeks, and you're sitting on second trying to get to third and she says to you "normally, I'd be all about this but my confidence is not really good with you"

do not, I repeat DO NOT, under any circumstances let the information you know about her generous sexual past lead you to say

"I don't know why, you have plenty of experience"

You'll be called out at second base and ejected from the field of play with a quickness that will make your head spin.

Do not waste your time trying to chase down and woo one particular girl. If it gets to the point where you are chasing her pull the rip cord and bail. there are too many girls at college (even at NC State) to focus on just one that even if you get her you won't marry.

Also, take pride in your appearance. You'll see a positive response and this will impact your confidence. If you don't give much weight to girls who are shabby looking why would a girl's impression of you be any different?

^^^ Just repeat this a million times. Especially if you live in a dorm as you just don't have room for more shit, and even MORE so if you live in one of the tri-towers as those rooms are closet sized in the first place (Bowen, Metcalf, Caroll I think.) I lived in Bowen for a year in one of the A rooms... and there's not much room for anything other than 2 desks, beds and dressers.

Bring clothes for 2-3 weeks, your computer, cell phone, bathroom stuff, and the TV/dvd player/Console if you have to. Just wait to buy your notebooks and shit from the bookstore as you'll probably have to pickup some blue-books anyway. The less you bring, the more likely you are to go out and meet people as you won't have excuses to stay in the room. I made the mistake of bringing extra shit I didn't need the first semester and it either gets lost, stolen or you never fucking use it. When I went home over christmas that year I just put all the shit I didn't use in boxes and left it there.

Also... don't bring decorations. It's a dorm room, and no matter how hard you try it's going to look shitty. Pickup a poster or 2 from one of the many people that will try to sell them to you in the brickyard if you want to put something on the wall.

If you're ever in need of something to do during the week, get a classmate or suitemate and go play Racquetball at the gym. Even if you've never played the game in your life, the rules are basic, the learning curve is low, it's a helluva fun game and will keep you in shape. Plus if you just suck extremely bad, at least you don't have to chase after the ball like in Tennis.

If you can fucking help it... avoid Norris as a math teacher unless you enjoy swift kicks to the nuts in the form of Maple every week.

http://www.snotmonkey.com/articles/34-things-to-make-your-time-at-ncsu-more-enjoyable/
Quote :
"Let me spill out the REAL gems.

1) Registration means NOTHING. If you want in a class and it’s full (which it will be until you are a junior), GO TO THE CLASS ANYWAY. Go the first three days AT LEAST, and 90% chance you will get in. Get the classes you WANT, don’t let your advisor or anyone else tell you differently.

2) DO NOT BUY BOOKS. Wait at LEAST two weeks before buying text books. Then your textbook is over 50 bucks, borrow it from a stupid classmate, and take it to Kinko’s and photocopy it (500 pages runs about 17.50). Much easier to highlight and carry around. I put the chapters for each book i needed along with paper in a single 2 1/2? notebook.

3) Find a friend with a car, or several if possible. The busses suck for everything but drunken rides home. Cars are awesome. If you have a car, bring it. There are TONS of hidden places to park around state without needing a permit or pass. There are also a number of private lots you can get a parking pass for, or just find a friend off campus with a house and space for you to park your car.

4) The meal plan and boardbucks are a joke. After your mandatory freshman year, don’t waste you or your parent’s money. You can eat much better and cheaper from the grocery store, and there are plenty within bus/walking distance of school. Refer to #3 to get to the good stores.

5) Take at LEAST one design course. They are the best way to relieve stress, meet girls, and find crazy people to party with. Also take at least one Psychology course, also great for meeting the ladies. If you are a girl, be aware that most of the guys in your design and psychology courses are just there to meet you.

6) DO NOT BUY PRINT QUOTA. If you have access, use the CHASS lab. If not, buy a cheap laser or color laser printer (under a $100 bucks) and a few reams of paper. This will last you your entire time in college, and will save you a LOT of cash.

7) If you need to print BIG stuff, go to the School of Design labs. They have HUGE full color plotters that only cost $2.40 per linear foot (also remember to print everything as PDF)

8) NEVER DO FIRST YEAR COLLEGE. It is a complete waste of money. Pick a major, if you dont like it change, FYC is a joke and just sets you on the path to nowhere.

9) Get a laptop. Desktops are big and ugly. Don’t buy the 15 pound super laptop either. Get something light enough to carry to class, but with enough power and performance to be useful. If in doubt, get a Macbook Pro from the Apple Student Store, a Lenovo ThinkPad from the Lenovo Student Site, or a Dell from DellUniversity.com
. DO NOT BUY A COMPUTER FROM THE BOOKSTORE/BEST BUY/CIRCUIT CITY. Go Online. Save yourself a lot of money. OR Wait until you meet a nerd in your suite/dorm who will build you a custom computer for practically nothing.

10) Don’t get suckered into buying a loft. Wait out your freshman year and get one for free at the end of spring semester when all the other people move out. If you can find a good one for 20 bucks or less then buy it.

11) USE THE GYM. Go and go often, its the best deal for a full gym you will ever have.

12) Never use the health center. In my 3.5 years they NEVER diagnosed me correctly, nor did any of my friends get diagnosed correctly. Go to a real doctor, and stick with them. Ask your professors for recommendations, or ask an upperclassman friend.

13) Never apply for ANY credit card on campus or that is sent to you in the mail.

14) Open a student checking account with the SECU or BB&T. If you need a credit card, get one through them. Keep about 100 bucks in there, don’t bounce any checks. You will get rewarded big time when you graduate and get a real job.

15) Go downtown. Live after 5, First Fridays, many other kick ass events happen downtown, and they are free and fun. Also don’t be afraid to venture to Chapel Hill. Great music scene. If you’re a guy, there are ridiculous amounts of women.

16) Don’t take on a steady boyfriend of girlfriend until at LEAST your junior year. You will miss out on much of the college experience if you don’t wait. Don’t let occasional sex bother you, it’s college, no one will remember anyway.

17) UT sucks, don’t live there unless you plan to dropout anyway. Get an apartment or house before UT. Keep in mind you will probably party there a lot. But you never want to live where you party.

18) Along the same lines, everyone should spend at least their first year on campus. Preferably their first two years. Definitely get out and do stuff, it’s when you will meet most of your lifelong college friends.

19) Never do anything more than 20 hours a week.

20) If you want to work, get a work study.

21) The library is good for two things: cramming before exams, and sex in the stacks. There is little need to ever venture in there otherwise.

22) Meet a couple of upperclassmen in your major. Find out who the best prof’s and best classes are. Schedule ahead to get in those classes.

23) Never be afraid to challenge a grade or a decision by a professor. Fight the system and you will usually win. Don’t do this during class time. If you have a problem take it up with the professor during office hours.

24) Remember college is NOT to prepare you for a specific career, it is to make you a well rounded individual. Do not choose a major based on it’s career paths, choose a major based on YOUR INTERESTS.

25) Refrain from keg stands, beer bongs, and all other binge drinking methods. Binge drinkers are not cool, and you will be talked about for all the wrong reasons. The guys who are still standing at the end of the night are the ones who take home the ladies.

26) Don’t even bother with a fake ID in Raleigh. Go to house parties until you are 21. Seriously it isn’t worth the chance of getting busted. Don’t drive drunk. You will get busted, and it will ruin your life for a couple of years at the least.

27) If you live on campus, and you are piss-drunk at a party, DO NOT GO BACK TO YOUR DORM ROOM. Stay at a friends, or crash at the party house for the night if possible. Drinking and walking home with your friends is fine, but if you are stumbling drunk, you can count on getting a ticket eventually.

28) Take philosophy of religion. At least open yourself to questioning your faith, it will only make it stronger.

29) Take at least one PE course every semester. It’s a great way to learn activities, meet people you never would have otherwise, and relieve stress from class. Being able to participate in sports will be valuable for networking as a working professional.

30) Be outside at least 4 hours a day doing something when it is above 65.

31) If you want to rush your freshman year, go ahead. But don’t pledge until your sophomore year. And even then, think about it, college can be a lot more fun with no strings attached.

32) Go to EVERY organizational meeting in the fall. It can account for at least HALF of your meals for several months. Join the ones that you are actually interested in only after all the freebees have stopped.

33) GO POTLUCK. Living with someone you already know never works out well as a freshman. It’s yet another way to meet a new social group, and learning to live with someone new and different will help you tremendously in life.

34) Study Abroad. Take advantage of internships. Even if you don’t think you can afford it, study abroad at least one semester. It will be one of the best (and most rewarding) experiences of your life. If you have already traveled internationally, be sure to go somewhere new. Internships can be incredible. It’s a great way to get real experience, get paid, meet other people, network, and prolong your college experience!

^^^ actually, this thread was originally created in 2003-2004, and the things I posted came from several users here that I'd saved. I didn't save NCSU-specific stuff, as I've never attended State, but lots of users posted good stuff. Very few of the things in the lists I posted came from me.

Get involved in the school. Learn all you can about it. Be a part of the traditions* and become a part of its history.

Also remember, college != high school.

*If you go to NC State, make transient traditions.

1) Once you're done unpacking, repack all your shit and transfer to UNC Wilmington. College isn't about learning, you fucking naïf. The chicks are hotter, the ratio is better, and you're right by the beach. Unless you're going for engineering, your degree is a worthless piece of paper that you can get at any bottom of the barrel school.

Co-oping is a good way to gain experience and still live on campus, if that's your thing.

Also, try to avoid graduating for as long as possible. Change majors, add majors, throw in some minors, etc. Just keep that GPA high.

Suck up to your teacher the first couple weeks of class by participating and doing your work, maybe going to office hours. It'll pay off when you need a point or two on a test or something.

Cheating is an artform

Anyone can do work and get A's...at a State college, that is not much of an accomplishment

But to cheat your way into a 3.5 or better is truly a rare skill

Do not waste your time taking Japanese no matter how much you like video games or anime or whatever. It's useless and you'll wish you took a useful language later. Also, it's FUCKING HARD and even if someone tells you Dr. Mertz is ok, do not pay them any mind. That person, no matter how much they learn of Japanese, is wasting their time. Any Japanese person you want to meet speaks English. You won't lose geek cred.

Do not major in the Humanities, unless you're CERTAIN you want to teach.

Law school is not a backup choice if you can't decide what else to do. If you think you might want to consider it, get started NOW. Do pre-law, or be prepared to work for 5 years as a LA or clerk after school to get experience. You're wasting your time if you just BS through a Poly Sci degree and then apply to go right after UG.

No runnin by the pool with scissors.

^ Hey now, every job I've gotten since graduating was due to my Japanese language classes But I agree if you're only taking it because you like video games or anime, you'll never get to the 400 level required for it to be useful.

Yep, lived in Japan for four years. Then came back and started working for a Japanese travel agency where I was the only native English speaker. Now I have a job in an international student program at a university where I have to use Japanese almost daily.

take your freshman classes seriously. yea they're all 100 level bullshit but if you fuck up your gpa now you will regret that shit later when you're trying to pull it up in all 400 level classes. get your A's while they're easy to get.

oh and definitely study abroad. idc where you go but you definitely need to take advantage of the direct exchange programs at state. best. college. experience. ever.

I definitely agree most people should take advantage of study abroad opportunities, they're not for everyone. I met some people abroad that were such a psychological wreck they went home after a few weeks. And I'm sure when they got home proceeded to tell everyone how terrible the country was even though they were barely there
