Tried to watch it again last night....couldn't get through it for a 2nd time. I can't understand how so many of you think this is a great movie. It is by far the slowest, most pointless movie I have ever seen. And no, I am not huge into big CGI movies or a huge fan of Michael Bay. And yes I do have an attention span. So don't try and bring that bs. If this had beaten out NCFOM best movie I would have shit myself.

At least the line, My brother from another mother, wont seem so out of place.

^^Ha Ha Ha.

I guess it wasn't a super great movie since I have just about forgotten it now... oh wait, oil=greed and pioneers = simpletons... there you go, that's about it.

I did love the acting of the main character, and the music was very nicely done.

I would recommend this movie to my European friends who do not like "Hollywood" movies. This reminded me of some of those Euro flicks I've seen which don't mind skimping on the dialogue in exchange for long displays of "humanity" or some such artsy malarky.

If I had to rank this movie,

There Will Be Blood < Spanglish < 3 10 to Yuma

ive always thought that a good movie adaptation of "The Most Dangerous Game" (set in the correct time period, not like the modern, poor renditions of this awesome short story) with DDL as Sanger Rainsford would be awesome. But I just dont know if it is long enough / has enough plot to carry a full movie.

I gave a copy to a realtor that I do a lot of work with.

Tonight she told me that I like it because I'm so much like Daniel Plainview.

Were that what I was describing, then I would have used that word. The ends of those movies are discomforting, but not without pleasure. The lack of a neat/traditional ending is refreshing and honest feeling.

Is "there will be blood" supposed to be what plainview whispered to sunday after his confession infront of the church congregation at the third revelation?

I haven't seen this thread, but I've seen the movie. I really didn't like it that much when i first saw it, but after thinking about it and letting it digest I actually think I liked the movie. I do however understand if you really didn't like it, their wasn't much to it.

Initial impression:

Amazing acting and art, technically an amazing movie. Obviously very, very good as a character study, but overall the movie left me waiting for something more right up until the credits. Soundtrack had me on edge the whole movie, but I was also simultaneously a little bored with the story, or lack thereof.

Overall, I'd recommend this movie only to people that like non-traditional movies....otherwise, they'll likely hate it.

he doesn't "gotta be."

Eli yells at his father about his brother selling them out iirc. I personally don't believe he has multiple personalities which would be the case here...

Daniel also talks about how much money he gave paul in the final scene and it pisses eli off. again, I guess if you believe the multiple personality thing you could see this that way. eli is the "afterbirth," paul was "the smart one."

paul talks about eli at the beginning i think. again, either brothers, or insanity, I believe brothers.

Then, they were supposed to be played by two different actors, but Anderson got rid of the other guy two weeks into filming. I am of the opinion that he wasn't saying "oooh! I wanna make them the same person, aren't I sneaky?!" but he just wanted Dano playing a bigger part also(eli).

we never see them together because paul was smart and gets out of the hell hole and away from his abusive pansy father and crazy religious brother after he got some cash...

I think Anderson intentionally left it open for debate, but I believe they were brothers and not the same person..

I don't see how this is relevant, explain.

well when eli/paul brings the firewood, Plainview has a look on his face like "wtf, he looks like paul but he is saying his name is eli"...I just assumed that since the looked so much alike that they were actually the same person. And his insanity can be justified by his violent outbursts toward his father etc. and his delusional sermons. I dunno, I guess its still possible that they are brothers, it makes the movie interesting that you dont really know

Oh look, how clever. Get off your fucking high horse.

Look, just because some people think this movie is less than amazing, doesn't mean that they are idiots. I enjoyed it for it's acting and from a technical standpoint, but I also like a plot. I like movies that don't move at a snails pace. Sue me.

An obvious comparison is No Country For Old Men....which I LOVED....but this movie left me just feeling meh overall at the end. Maybe I need a rewatch. You even said you only enjoyed it after watching it twice.

^^I dunno...No Country just had an interesting plot that kept me engrossed the whole film. It was both technically excellent AND entertaining.

There Will be Blood was technically excellent and only slightly entertaining at times. Other times it just dragged for me.

Like I admitted, maybe I just need a rewatch. But my first experience was fairly meh.

I just watched it over the weekend. I thought it was an excellent movie.

I thought the camera work was amazing. They really put a lot of thought into each scene and added a quality to the film that I don't always expect. The soundtrack was great as well.

I have to disagree somewhat on the acting. There were parts of the movie with superb acting, but there were also parts where the characters just didn't seem to mesh. The scene where Plainview first walks up to the Sunday ranch comes to mind. That whole interchange between Plainview and Mr. Sunday ("we have goat's milk" "that'll be fine" or whatever) just didn't seem like a natural or real conversation that two adults would have. It sounded scripted and practiced. While the vast majority of the movie had great acting, there were a few scenes that didn't seem to work IMO.
