Okay. You are either trolling or your knowledge of the universe of music is so narrow that you should probably not even post in this thread. Or this boardI'm Krallum and I approved this message./]

i'll admit i'm weak in my breadth of "rock" descendents of blues, but i really had never heard of this group, and sincerely think the vocals are terribad. they sound like progressive rock with grindcore vocals. they definitely have a dream theater influence, but not nearly the talent.

This is the thread that got me into BTBAM. Btw, already got my ticket for the Winston-Salem show in September. Can't wait to hear Parallax played in full. Anyone else going?

I would say everyone in the BTBAM is way way way more talented than their counterpart in Dream Theater. Portnoy is probably the most overrated drummer in metal. Sure he can play extremely calculated things but there is very little variation in his style over the years. Most of his drumming is nothing that any death metal drummer couldn't do assuming they wanted to memorize some shitty 16 minute song with 200 different time signatures over the same riff with slightly different variations. He has one polyrhythm and thats all he does. Portnoy is also responsible for the grimdark edgy direction dream theater went in after train of thought.John Petrucci is a great guitarist but is no where near on the same level as Paul / Dustie. Songwriting? I think btbam has gone down hill after colors as far as song writing goes. But technically DT is no where near the same level.and holy shitThis dude rules. Didn't know they replaced Lyle - who was great but always looked like he was autistic. Skip to like 2:10 in this shitI'm Krallum and I approved this message./]

^the Faceless will be opening for BTBAM in September. Looking forward to that. What's wrong with the songwriting on Parallax II? I love it but I don't write music either so that is why I ask.
7/2/2013 1:38:44 PM
Honestly I think The Great Misdirect and Parallax I & II are basically just Colors reworks. Then again I guess thats better than pulling a Mastodon or Baroness and completely shitting up your entire style.I'm Krallum and approved this message.

I Think PII is their best stuff since colors, but I still don't really listen to it all the way through very often.
7/2/2013 3:09:03 PM
^^^^ holy shit, the syncopation and hemiola around ~2:40-3min were insane. his movement isolation is the best i've seen
7/2/2013 7:41:30 PM
^^^^^ I think I agree with all of that, especially about Portnoy.

Also, I enjoyed the deafheaven drummer live, even though he didn't have tons of variation. He had lots of power behind his hits and they were very clean given what he was playing at times. Not on the level of the guy from the faceless or Blake or anything but still. I think he made the biggest/best change on their newest album. That and good production finally.[Edited on July 2, 2013 at 8:13 PM. Reason : ]

Ill have to listen to it again. Its kind of poppy which turned me off a little bitIm Krallum and I approved this message

yeah, I don't know if you would ever really like it or not based on what I know of your tastes. The best stretch of the album is tracks 1-2-3. After that it can tend to run together a little bit and the 2nd and 3rd interludes don't add anything to the album. In general, it really reminded me of an odd mixture of lots of bands I was listening to 10+ years ago but in a well that felt a little fresh.[Edited on July 2, 2013 at 8:24 PM. Lol thats exactly how far I listened before I got bored of it. Hipster black metal is my thing but I like it to be more nerdy / avant-garde I'm Krallum and I approved this message./]

ha. The last track is really good imo (The Pecan Tree). TBH, I mainly listen to 1-2-3-5-7 and just skip the 4th and 6th track interludes. I like those 5 tracks a lot though, the first 3 are just the best section.

Everyone around here says baroness played a house show sometime around First / Second and that it was one of the best shows they'd ever seen. They were pretty good a few years ago with Opeth / High on Fire (I believe it was that show)I'm Krallum and I approved this message./]

Thought you might dig thishttp://unartignyc.com/2013/07/05/deafheaven-285-kent-independence-day-2013-uncut31/I'm glad unatrig is actually writing blog posts again, even if most of them are nothing but a list of gear used to record its way easier than checking the latest videos all the time.I'm Krallum and I approved this message.

sweet thanks man. I just got back home for the weekend so i'll have to check them out more tomorrow. I listened to just a little bit though and it's nice to get a decently recorded live performance. Similar set to what I saw, except they played Irresistible in between Dream House and Sunbather and then they played Violet as an encore.[Edited on July 5, 2013 at 10:54 PM. Reason : ]

Sorry to derail this even further but I feel like the people who have this thread in their topics probably dig the descendentshttp://unartignyc.com/2013/07/06/descendents/I'm Krallum and I approved this message.

i do dig the descendents but I'll have to listen when I'm not at work.Anyone going tonight? Wasn't planning on it, but since I'm in the area anyway I bought a ticket. I believe this is the first time they are playing PII in entirety. Since I was at every single CD release show from s/t to TGM, and they didn't do a CD release show for any Parallax stuff, I guess this one counts as keeping the streak alive? (even though honestly I've only listened to this album a handful of times)

^ I was there and had an awesome spot upstairs on the rail, center stage. Great show, the slam dancing kids were pretty fun to watch/laugh at. Can't believe no fights were started from it. I love this album so the set-list was A+ for me
9/16/2013 2:12:28 PM
I was upstairs the whole time too, kind of off to the left with 2 friends. They played really, really well and Dan's bass mix was one of the best I've ever heard (he is also probably the best bassist I've seen live still). I wish they would have played something older as an encore. Seeing White Walls as an encore is pretty epic considering what their main set consisted of, but I would have loved to see Mordecai or More of Myself to Kill. If they aren't going to do it in Winston, they aren't going to do it anywhere for quite awhile I'm guessing. Not like I haven't seen each a few dozen times, but still
