jason, the crap about tommy-o being a big disciplinarian at boston college is quite exaggerated. for example, one of his captains punched an opposing player during a game, and he was suspended for all of one guy. there are several instances of his players getting in fights around the town, like that bar brawl earlier this year.

i don't hate o'brien. i hate hiring him. there's a difference. and who is "everyone"??? and you do realize that coaching candidates speak in semantics, right?

i dont think anyone can honestly compare what O'Brien did at BC to what he might do at NCSU and what Davis did at Miami and what he might do at UNC. Four totally different programs. Everyone can speculate all they want, we wont know until next year....like him as the hire or not, he is the new coach... GO PACK.

who does everyone think that tom o'brien will start at quarterback?

he had a good qb at BC in matt ryan. it is probably going to be between burke or beck.

i don't think their oc is all that great, their numbers as far as ppg aren't that much better than ours besides a few games, most against crappy teams w/ the exception of maryland:

Quote :
"August 31 at Central Michigan W 31-24 1-0 (0-0)
September 9 No. 18 Clemson W 34-33 2-0 (1-0)
September 16 Brigham Young W 30-23 3-0 (1-0)
September 23 at North Carolina State L 17-15 3-1 (1-1)
September 30 Maine W 22-0 4-1 (1-1)
October 12 No. 22 Virginia Tech W 22-3 5-1 (2-1)
October 21 at Florida State W 24-19 6-1 (3-1)
October 28 Buffalo W 41-0 7-1 (3-1)
November 4 at No. 22 Wake Forest L 21-14 7-2 (3-2)
November 11 Duke W 28-7 8-2 (4-2)
November 18 No. 21 Maryland W 38-16 9-2 (5-2)
November 23 at Miami (FL) L 17-14

Well, you just questioned his being a disciplinarian when he suspended a guy for a game. Are you dumb? Would he still be a disciplinarian if the punishment were a whopping two games?

Then you took one random occurrence that was out of his control to try and support you.

But yet, you didn't bother to throw in the statistic of their penalty yards versus ours this year (here is a hint, it's better even than a decently improved NCSU team this year).

I love how we're on a 7 game losing streak and TOB's 9 wins a season for the past 3 years isn't good enough.

I'm not reading this whole damn thread, but if someone can come up with some goods reason not to like this pick, I'll be shocked.

It's not a sexy pick, but it sure seems like a smart pick. I support TOB.

It's official, if it already wasn't. We have the most idiotic fanbase in the country. I mean who the fuck did you want us to hire, a damn D-2 Coach just because he may have potential. We just got a guy that finishes in the top 25 every year and wins 9 games a year lately. He rebuilt BC to respectability at a place where it is hard to recruit anyone. He brings in great lineman and QB's, one thing that lord knows we need. If he brings that in with the current nucleus of the team, who knows what can happen...

my lord, give the guy a chance.

the guy was a CAPTAIN, and he PUNCHED an opponent. the way people have been propping tommy-o as a disciplinarian, i would think one of his CAPTAINS wouldn't have PUNCHED someone on the field. he also should've been suspended for more than 1 game, imo.

bc fans will be the first to tell you that he is overrated as a disciplinarian, and they've been saying it before yesterday.

he was padding his states with temple, rutgers, uconn, and div-1aa opponents. sound familiar?
how are you going to say you want reasons why this is a bad hire, but then say you're not going to read the thread???

Quote :

which of the other candidates are div2 coaches? not pj, jimbo, sherman, chow, cutcliffe, kragthorpe, shula...

Quote :
"that's a hell of a lot better than spitting on an official and getting suspended for one quarter."

for the billionth time. tank spat on a PLAYER (not saying it's better), and some spit unintentionally got on a referee. anyways, my point wasn't to compare the disciplining of amato and o'brien. i was only saying that o'brien is overrated as a disciplinarian.

Quote :
"So will someone comment on this guys recruiting and not his lack of making you happy."

o'brien has no recruiting ties in north carolina nor the southeast. now, he is expected to compete with 4 other division 1a schools in the state, 3 of which are our near neighbors. he'll be hitting the recruiting trails against unc's butch davis, an experienced recruiter of the area; jim grobe, who's wake forest team just won the conference title; philip fulmer (tenn.); steve spurrier (south car.); tommy bowden (clemson); bobby bowden (fsu); mark richt (georgia); and miami's new coach.

Quote :
"Here's where Scout.com ranked their last 5 recruiting classes:

'07 - 45th - 2.71 avg. stars
'06 - 44th - 2.40 avg.
'05 - 58th - 2.38 avg.
'04 - 42nd - 2.45 avg.
'03 - 27th - 2.58 avg.

Average recruiting ranking nationally: 43.2
Average star rating for these recruits: 2.504

The '03 class that was the highest of the last five contained 0 top 100 players--no 5 or 4 star recruits. The overwhelming majority of TOB's recruits have been 3-star players.

Further, out of these five recruiting classes, there have only been 2 top 100 players."

in all fairness, from that list on Temple can be called a padding - the others are decent teams.

and the whole cupcake card is played out - every team plays a couple of cupcakes knowingly.

^^ Sure, he beat the likes of Rutgers, Temple, Army, etc.

As I recall when Amato has the Gator Bowl year, no one complained that it was built based on OOC cupcakes.

Also, last I checked, we LOST to a bunch of "cupcake teams" like Akron, UNC, ECU, etc.

Also, if you're using strength of schedule to diminish his recent winning seasons, let's look at Paul Johnson's SOS, the top person people seem to want instead of TOB.

Navy padded this year with the likes of, gasp: ECU, UMASS, EAstern Michigan, Temple

Every team plays cupcakes. At least TOB beats the cupcakes...

How about find some fucking links. I don't take what some ass clown on a message board says at face value. Especially when he is being ludicrous at thinking 2 incidents (1 completely outside of the coaches control) make a coach a failing disciplinarian indicative of a program that is out of control.

It stands a little juxtaposed when a coach can graduate the hell out of his players but he can't discipline.

I guess his assistants much be geniuses at finding smart players because they can't be doing anything to be sure they graduate because they lack control and discipline with in the program.

Wake up you ass hat.

rutgers is having their best season EVER. they had an overwhelming losing record the between '00-'05. uconn? they're not a good team. are you kidding, sru?

slackerb, we're not talking about amato. there has been thousands of threads about amato. we're talking about tom o'brien. he pads his stats. as for navy... THEY'RE FUCKING NAVY! i'm not going to post a thesis for you about navy's intrinsic disadvantages. just know that pj has be remarkable at navy considering.

blind hate:
a. besides the boards and blogs, i know bc students. they're all happy beyond their minds. not because they expect a better coach, but they wanted something different. they felt like o'brien plateaued.
b. yes, bc recruits smarter players. for one thing, bc is a private institution with higher standards. secondly, they're not a football school so they're not as lax as others with athletic admissions.
c. i guarantee you that we will never see 96% graduation rates at nc state, or anything close to it.
d. i love that you feel comfortable enough to continually talk shit over the internet.

AS I SAID, I DON'T HATE TOMMY-O. I HATE HIS HIRING. HERE ARE MY REASONS:

Quote :
"now is the perfect time to take a huge step up. o'brien is a solid, but medicore hire. as i said, we had BETTER coaches who said they WANTED to coach here.

all-time versus temple, rutgers, uconn, i-aa schools, and any non-bcs program other than byu or boise state:
38 wins
5 losses

all-time versus all other schools:
37 wins
39 losses

all-time against the ap top 25:
7 wins
21 losses

all-time against teams that finished the season in the ap top 25:
4 wins
22 losses

all-time against miami, virginia tech, and florida state:
3 win
15 losses

all-time conference titles (9 years at bc):
0
those stats were compiled by http://www.firetob.com]

other points:

- this is not only an inter-conference move, but an inter-division move.
- bc fans are ecstatic. i wonder why?
- out outgoing coach, chuck amato (3-9), beat o'brien this year. we won because instead of sealing the game with a short field goal, o'brien decided to try and convert on 4th and 3 with a fullback offtackle play. his fullback was just coming off a shouler injury, and reinjured the same shoulder earlier in the game. this blunder left 42 seconds on the gameclock, and he allowed us to drive the field for a game winning touchdown.
- a couple of years ago, bc could've gotten a bcs bowl bid (a first for o'brien) by simply beating syracuse, a horrible football team. bc and o'brien choked.
- those are examples of what bc fans have dubbed "wtf games". he has a couple of these every year.
- butch davis, unc's new head coach, is 4-0 versuse tom o'brien. unc is our biggest rival, and losing to them has been a primary factor for the firing of our previous two coaches.
- o'brien has no recruiting ties in north carolina nor the southeast. now, he is expected to compete with 4 other division 1a schools in the state, 3 of which are our near neighbors. he'll be hitting the recruiting trails against unc's butch davis, an experienced recruiter of the area; jim grobe, who's wake forest team just won the conference title; philip fulmer (tenn.); steve spurrier (south car.); tommy bowden (clemson); bobby bowden (fsu); mark richt (georgia); and miami's new coach.
- his lack of charisma and stoic personality isn't going to help him much on the recruiting trails. not saying the guy needs to be boistrious, but he is a saltine cracker.
- o'brien's disciplinarian rep is vastly overrated. he has routinely given out lax punishments. a 1 game suspension for a captain who punched an opponent is an example. bc fans have complained about this even before news broke about o'brien being hired by nc state.
- he had a VERY poor relationship with his previous athletic director and bc alumni. if he can't develop and maintain a good relationship at a school's football priorities fall behind hockey and lacrosse, things don't bode well for him at nc state. our athletic director calls a faction of the fanbase "the lunatic fringe". as messed up as that is, he's somewhat right. o'brien will get torn apart by the fans, alumni, boosters, and media down here.
- o'brien has been pimping himself out for years now, and got publicly rejected by schools such as unc, washingtion, and arizona state. the guy's been trying to jump ship for awhile now, but had no where to go. now he is essentially doing it in-house. we're taking a multiple time reject over guys many schools want, and guys highly respected as up-and-coming superstar head coaches.
- this hire creates a MAJOR rift in our fanbase... again.
- we've been interviewing candidates for two weeks, but ended up hiring a guy we talked with for less than a day.

i'm still livid about the prospect of tom o'brien being our next head coach. i haven't felt this ill about anything in several years."

Those 'other points' show a complete lack of understanding about the BCU football program and about Tom O'Brien himself. I don't care to argue it because I've done it all before.

The only thing I'll say is that BCU reached it's ceiling as a program, not TOB as a coach.

oh and he only played UConn at the 1-A level twice.. It's not like he continually beat up on them..
