AP reports Steelers HC Bill Cowher and team president Art Rooney are expected to come to a quick decision after the season ends about Cowher's future. Cowher must decide if he will coach through the final year of his contract in 2007. If so, the team will begin negotiations on an extension for a new contract if Cowher wants to do that. But if Cowher wants to step down, he will have to make that decision quickly. The Steelers cannot wait long for their coach to make up his mind because they would risk losing their top two candidates -- Steelers assistants Russ Grimm and Ken Whisenhunt -- for the job from their own staff. If, as it looks, the Steelers do not make the playoffs, it will help both men land jobs. As for Cowher, there might be NFL owners willing to hire him for the $8-$10 million per year that he's expected to command. He's not going to make that kind of money with the Steelers, who pay him an estimated $4 million. Even in contract extension talks, sources say, the annual salary offer did not go much above $6 million, and that was at the end of the contract.

So I understand people being wrong when they say the Rooney's are cheap when it comes to players as their is a cap to deal with. But what about their 2nd best coach ever? Is it a good thing to go cheap in dealing with negotiations with him when they rake in so much freaking money and they could pay him what they want? I am not saying I want Cowher to stay...just that if they are offering him a contract, they must want him to, but they are lowballing him bigtime.

On another note, I hope if Coach Cowher goes, they don't hire Whiz or Grimm as the next HC."

The more I think about it, I completely agree

I think right now the only person offered the job has been Cowher. If he has already said no... no way we've already jumped to someone else. If Cowher says no, I think we'll take a week or so to decide who we want to be our #1.

I do expect that to be Paul Johnson, though

the more i read here and other sites.. I think I'm going to like having Johnson as a coach..

just please god, dont bring Marcas Stone in as a QB since you can run an option

I DO like Stone as a tight end because he was an AWESOME blocker and he runs solid routes, just have to work on his footwork.

^ i get the impression that johnson runs the option b/c he can't get a decent qb at navy, not b/c he doesn't like to throw. if we do get him, i hope that's the case (i don't want to watch the option anymore than i want to watch the princeton offense)

Apparently the higher ups like Donnan.

I think he'll be a few down on our list, and I don't expect for us to go down past #3 or so

(I don't think we'll get past Johnson... and I think he's our clearcut #2)

This is just my personal opinion, BTW

Quote :

That would be Johnson

You may not like his offenses at Navy, but I remember it being a bit different at GA Southern.
I think if he had the talent he'd switch it up...and he's said that.

The guy wins, wins big, and wins fast. Thus far, he's been proven to be a tremendous coach

the less we hear about cowher + ncsu ~ the better.
until the NFL season is over, he cant say anything about any future job aspirations....

The big question is if we can keep the media spin under control long enough while we wait for the season to end. (at least the steelers wont be in the playoffs either!) We already have blowtoads like Adam Gold out there spreading false info and itll only get worse in the coming weeks....

probably more of a longshot than cowher, but i'd love to see the ol' ball coach be our next coach. talk about securing recruits, stealing a couple others, and having a coach who despises UNC. he'll either stay at usc or head down to tuscaloosa. doubt he ends up at miami but who knows. i'd still love to see him in raleigh.

i'll be fine with PJ, cowher, chow, or jimbo. please, hell no to donnan.

i hope the NCSU hiring team is that stupid...that way PJ won't leave

Navy had 400 yards rushing, was 6-11 on 3rd down, and 3-3 on 4th down, punted once, and had 2 turnovers...neither of which ECU did anything with. Navy caused a fumble and scored 7 off of it. hell, navy only let ecu have the ball for 2:55 in the final quarter...so i guess if that's ECU's players losing the game, then yeah they did

One this will be certain regardless of the coach we have next year.

I am gonna laugh my ass off when we run all over people cause we have (hopefully) some kind of sanity in our offense.

Sorry everyone for being late to the thread, but I got an alum friend who is interested in knowing where Norm Chow is at with this coaching search? Is he no longer a top three pick? Can anyone give a succint summary about this? Much appreciated.

Personally, I'm all about getting Cowher in here right now...

But, from reading that article, that Cutcliffe guy can't be all that bad (besides the heart attack) and anyone who can help Tennessee drop 55 points on a top-10 ranked defense like Georgia this year back in October is legit to me....

Cutcliffe was pretty good for awhile. Then his QB was a top 5 pick. Then he wasn't so good. Familiar story.

This one rated a 2.5, if only because you know athletic director Lee Fowler did not want another coaching search after being rebuffed by everybody but the grandson of Everett Case when he went to hire a basketball coach last spring. But Coach Chest's closing seven-game losing streak forced the issue. Buzz replacement name: Former USC and NC State offensive coordinator Norm Chow. Bill Cowher remains the fantasy choice."

The interim coach proposal would be good if all came true.

Other than that, I like Fisher...assuming he brings a good DC with him.

i know many of you dont ever believe that anything i say is true....but at the carolina hurricanes game last night i spoke with a couple of state administrators and the offer has been extened to cowher who will have one week to decide....if he turns it down, the offer will be immediately extended to paul johnson. of course cowher would a dream hire, but p.j. i think would direct our program in a direction where us as fans can actually be proud of what we see on the field.

ANYTHING FOR COWHER

I am gonna be so jealous of the freshman if he ends up here.

We delt with shitty roads, shitty coaching, and shitty buildings.

Freshman get new coaches, new roads, new buildings, and more females.

"Additionally, allow me to share a little something more that I find interesting - BEFORE Chuck Amato was fired, I was told by someone connected to a big Georgia booster that Donnan had made reference to this booster of his interest in the NC State job. But, what was most interesting is that Donnan had added a statement that he (paraphrased) “would even do the job on an interim basis if that is what State wanted”.

At the time I heard this I found this unprompted reference to being an interim coach interesting. Considering where we stand today, I find this fascinating.

We all know that IF Bill Cowher was ever going to be named head coach in Raleigh that he would have to bring with him an experienced and highly-qualified COLLEGE staff. The two pieces of the puzzle that are going to be most vital for Cowher will be: (1) an assistant who can help him maneuver the college system and (2) a keen COLLEGE offensive coordinator.

Well…who does that describe? If Jim Donnan would be willing to be the Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator when Cowher arrives would you NOT want to take this package deal?

NC State fans who love what Paul Johnson did at the Division 1-AA level certainly can’t complain with this idea. Like Johnson, Jim Donnan also won a 1-AA National Championships and 2 Coach of the Year honors while successfully scaring the hell out of Division One teams at Marshall. He also succeeded on a much higher level at Georgia than Johnson has at just Navy. (Donnan was 40-19 overall and 25-15 in the SEC)

In addition to coaching at Florida State, Donnan was the Offensive Coordinator of Oklahoma’s high powered offenses from 1985-1989 when the Sooners won 49 games, including 27 straight Big Eight contests and the 1985 National Championship.

Donnan is currently a part-time ESPN announcer who is not going to get another Head Coaching gig unless he does something else first. Even if he only wants to use the interim job as a stage to get another head job then what harm is there? State would get one of the best head coaches of the 1980s and 1990s on our sideline who is obviously driven to succeed as much as he can with his opportunity. I’ve got no problem with that. If he stays then you get Donnan’s offensive success and knowledge of the college game packaged with Bill Cowher’s Super Bowl trophy and NFL success That ain’t too bad.

Again, remember that these suggestions are designed to be ‘win-win’ for all involved and:

are obviously based on a situation where Cowher is committed to NC State but the logistics can’t immediately come together

use Jim Donnan as a specific example that fits the proposed solution. There obviously could be many other coaches that also fit the solution.
"

This makes me go
