DEs take longer to develop than RBs. Right now Reggie is doing better than Mario but that doesn't mean dick. They could both end up being flops or pro bowlers it's too early to tell on both.

I will give Bush this, he is a good reciever.in fact, he is probably the best reciever on the Saints. But I still don't think he will work as an NFL HB, except just as a change-of-pace scatback.

No, you draft the player who is going to bring excitment to your team, sell out games, and make you money even when you are at the bottom of the NFL.
9/18/2006 8:37:19 PM
how does that help your team for a long, long time though?
9/18/2006 9:58:47 PM
^It doesnt, if macktuckizzle knew anything about the NFL he would realize it takes years to build a team. Bush might bring the Texans money for a year, but when he gets injured because their oline blows ass, then what. Theyre looking to build for the future not now.

Mario might not seem like the best pick now but in the long run he will be. Running backs average life in the NFL is less than 5 years. The Texans have no O-line to support the pass or the run. How great do you think Bush will be with out a line to block? Alsohe will not have more than 3 years in the NFL as a productive back. He is a stop and juke try to make some one miss. He is going to stop one time and someone like williams or Peppers will hit him and there goes your season.they have played against some cake teams the first 2 games. Lets see how reggie does the whole year. Remember Defense wins championships.
9/19/2006 8:28:18 AM
that is an absurd article, how could anyone be sold on that decision being a poor one already?
9/19/2006 9:07:34 AM
9/19/2006 9:54:49 AM
So apparently the Texans coach is dissapointed in Mario so far too. Anyone else watch PTI today?
9/27/2006 12:19:28 AM
Yeah, Mario has a history of being a slow starter. He was a nonfactor for the first 4 or 5 games last year before dominating in the rest of the season.
9/27/2006 1:02:50 AM
Julius Peppers started the season slow last yearHe must really suck
9/27/2006 9:40:36 AM
Why does everyone think mario will pick it up the 2nd half of the season? I don't think there is much correlation between his 3rd year in college and 1st year in the NFL. Also its not like he is a QB and needs to get his timing down with the receivers.
9/27/2006 9:47:54 AM
well usually (barring injury) players get better as they learn the game more at the next level
9/27/2006 9:50:30 AM
DAMN MARIO, WHY COULDN'T HE JUST COME INTO THE NFL AND DOMINATE EVERYONE INSTANTLYthey knew they were tryin to build a team when they drafted himhe's adefensive guy that you can build a defense around
9/27/2006 9:53:00 AM
Kubiak needs to look at his own coaching in how he is likely limiting Mario's development. I know he is a great talent, and Kubiak wants to use him wherever he can. However, switching him between all 4 line positions is probably hampering his ability to learn one position well. He'd be a more effective DE this year if the coaches allowed him to focus on that.
9/27/2006 10:32:31 AM
Well yea, he is going to learn the game as the year progesses, but I don't think he is gonna be like "oh shittzzz if i push my blocker backwards then I can get more sacks." I look for him to make significant improvements from his 1st to 2nd year due to the off season training. The ESPN NFL Hey Rookie show played clips of his coaches saying how bad his form was. These are things that you primarily work on during the offseason.
9/27/2006 10:44:22 AM
In the highlights they were showing of him today, he is being double teamed by the offensive lineman and a tight end in 3/4s of them. I know good DEs get doubled and still produce stats, but it's not like he is completely worthless if he's drawing double teams.I am disappointed that he hasn't done more yet, but I think its as much a product of the Texans horrible pass defense and lack of other quality defensive linemen as it is Mario's crappy play.
9/27/2006 11:24:48 AM
mario could get by with nothing but his physical ability in high school and college. they'll teach him some form and he'll be fine. they should be lookin at themselves before they start complainin about a guy who just finished his 3rd game ever in the NFL.
9/27/2006 11:53:25 AM
Oh, by the way, Bush 3Mario 0
9/27/2006 11:56:13 AM
when the texans give the ball to mario in the backfield and tell him to run, i'll start comparing the two.
9/27/2006 11:58:18 AM
Until the #1 pick gets a fucking sack, he doesn't get a point.Or how about even gets mentioned on ESPN for doing something good, and not being a letdown. [Edited on September 27, 2006 at 12:00 PM. Reason : .]
9/27/2006 12:00:15 PM
espn wont do that. i'm pretty sure getting a tackle is good. he's got a few of em, but i havent seen any of em. but i know i saw reggie bush dance around on a punt return for a net gain of about 3 yds numerous times.
9/27/2006 12:02:29 PM
^^so with that logic, bush should get no points until he gets in the endzoneso it is 0-0 right now by my count
9/27/2006 12:07:22 PM
^haha macktuckizzle was pwned in the face
9/27/2006 12:12:15 PM
Until the #2 pick gets a fucking touchdown, he doesn't get a point.
9/27/2006 12:19:02 PM
Look Mario is a good player, possibly great.. but if you had asked anyone on here where they though Mario would be drafted at the beginning of last year, or ever right after the season, most people would have said mid to late first round. I thought he was never consistent enough to justify a top ten pick. Then the NFL teams fell in love with his potential and his freakish athletic ability. He MAY end up being worth the number one, but I'm not sure there is another team in the NFL that would have passed on Bush.
9/27/2006 12:22:29 PM
the Chargers might've passed on Bush...maybe the Seahawks...ie teams with great running backs
9/27/2006 12:23:48 PM
^^You mean after his sophomore year? How many defensive sophomores can you tab to be a top 10 pick right now? It takes longer for defensive players to develop/prove themselves than it does offensive skill positions, who are more recognisable and less dependant upon strength that they have yet to develop.[Edited on September 27, 2006 at 12:28 PM. 9/27/2006 12:25:28 PM
the thing strong Mario haters dont realize is he is almost the "amazing physical potential" equivalent at DE to Reggie Bush at RBthey also forget that the Texans passed on Julius Peppers for David Carr a few years ago...they didnt want to do that again]
9/27/2006 12:27:31 PM
Even after last season (before the combines) I would have never considered him top ten. I love Mario as a great former NC State player... I'm just realistic. I was also one to think that Julius Hodge would not make a good NBA player. The jury is still out on him but hell... did he play 48 minutes total in all of last season?

9/27/2006 12:40:27 PM
I think the debate is IF he should have been picked number 1 and IF the Texans made a mistake.I feel sorry for the guy actually. He got boos from the crowd at the draft. The spotlight is on him more then any other number 1 in recent memory.[Edited on September 27, 2006 at 12:44 PM. Reason : ]

The Texans had a good RB before Davis was injured. They didn't even have a servicable DE. Now they have 1, so he is often double teamed.
9/27/2006 1:20:43 PM
The Saints were ready to take Mario at #2 from what I hear, so I don't think trading down would have helped them if they wanted him.

^^Bush has done enough already to prove he is worthy of the #2 pick, and should have gone #1. He has flashed his talent, Mario hasn't done a damn thing except get boos from his hometown "fans"
9/27/2006 2:02:34 PM
that's really sad
9/27/2006 2:11:20 PM
I know, I would hate to get booed constantly by the fans people who come to watch the games in Houston.I striked out fans because Houston pretty much alienated and pissed all them off by picking Mario, so as of now, they are just people who fill the seats.[Edited on September 27, 2006 at 2:16 PM. 9/27/2006 2:15:22 PM
^^^have you watched any Texans games? He has gotten pressure on the QBs he faced...he has hit QBs after they have released the ball...he has forced double teams that allowed DTs to get tackles...but that shit doesnt show up in the box score]
9/27/2006 2:15:55 PM
Any 5th round pick could do that.
