^^ yeah i didnt realize we were ranked 9th until i saw that article. I mean 9th!? Thats ridiculus. We should never be below clemson, uva, vt, miami or fsu (although fsu has been recruiting well lately), amongst others but those are the gimmie games in conference. i dont think it included wright in those rankings, but its a good point that he wouldnt really stand out that much in herb's system. In that system he'd bring as much as bethel did or atsur does...not that i'm not knocking those 2, but its nothing to cry over

Someone who is connected with the program pretty well says he thinks it'll be a Florida/NC State race for him.

This class could still shape up very nicely, but it's going to be a hit-or-miss year due to the late start.

definitely. if we land another good prospect like J.J. Hickson (#3 C), Anthony McClain (#7 C), Tracy Smith (#13 PF), etc. it could be just the catalyst to get Wright here and the others to commit. i'm glad we've already gotten Johnny Thomas to come along for the ride. he's supposed to be one of if not the best player in the state, and is very underrated.

who's this Michael Sanchez though. i've never even heard anything about him. apparently he has an offer from us though.

Amen to that you ungrateful bastards.

Someone mentioned to the 2 20-point games that Gavin Grant had....did we win those games?

Also that same person mentioned that AHHHHHHHTSUR is a good ball-handler.

I think you miss the point that its not always the stat line that shows value. AI's big scoring games are great examples of this. Gavin is way too raw to be our go-to.

This is going to be a VERY rough year for NCSU basketball.

those games where grant broke for 20 points but we still lost we didn't lose b/c of grant, we lost b/c our entire game revolved around shooting a million threes each game, and the last 1/4 of the season they stopped falling for us.

i don't mean to make any incorrect claims here, but the princeton offense is BAD.

Quote :
""he's going to do what he did here at asu. within 5 years they'll start becoming a tournament regular. the man is a good coach.""

yeah he probably will. he's a coach who's good enough to get a team to the tournament, but that's it. he's NOT good enough to coach for one of the north carolina acc teams. don't believe me? look at his record against unc, duke and wake. i'm not saying that sidney's going to come in and win the acc this season, but herb certainly got his chance to get this program on par with our peers, and he didn't do it.

i guess aside from miamiwolf everyone loved losing to unc and duke every year, which is exactly how things would've stayed with herb here.

EDIT: ^i agree about AI and i agree about grant, he is far too raw and showy and just wants to be julius. but he's certainly trying and good enough to be a key player in a system, not a one man team, however.

^I'm excited for something different as well.

Its easier to talk shit about the Sendek bashers because NC State would always be a solid program with him around. On the other hand, I felt like we would never get over the hump with him at the helm. Herb jetting off to Tempe only confirmed the fact that he didnt think he would get over the hump either. I'm just glad that we have someone willing to put it all on the line for NC State...someone that wants to be here.

We might suck for the next few years, but thats a risk I'm willing to take for the chance to become a great program again. We might never be bad with sendek, but we would never be great, and everyone saw that in him.

^we're basically on the same page here. honestly, i can't see how any state fan could not share that opinion.

lowe is a guy who won a national championship here. he's said (i like to believe it's true) that since he graduated this has been his dream job. i am also optimistic that his experience in the nba will help him get recruits who believe that he can get them to the nba (which i also like to believe). some rough seasons ahead, that's for sure, but i'm excited about him in the scheme of things.

Name ONE ACC head coach to have a winning record against Duke, UNC, and Wake.

In the history of the ACC Ill bet there is not a SINGLE coach with a winning record against those 3 and Wake hasn't always been good.

Sendek is a great coach. That is evident. Some argue over how great he can be but we know he is at the very least a top 25 program sort of coach. With Sidney Lowe there odds are that he will not be as good as even Sendek (this is not an evaluation standpoint but merely the logistics). We are taking a HUGE chance on Lowe and the odds are that we fall flat. THis is an ugly truth but one that most seem comfortable with. I'm not.

Actually when the Rick Barnes bit was big Sendek was actually about the same record as Barnes against Roy/UNC and Coach K/Duke. Its one of those perspective things... people say stuff like "I just want a coach who can win 50% of the time when we play our rivals." Well, newsflash, motherfuckers: NO ONE IS .500 AGAINST THEM! A 50% winning percentage against perennial #1's is simply not something that you just achieve if you want to.

ok guys you're right, we're always going to lose every game to duke and unc. sorry for hoping to get a program established that can actually compete with them, getting blown out at home by a unc team that has one returning player is fine by me b/c at the end of the season we'll be determined to be one of the top 65 teams in the country.

i hope you realize how fucking terrible that state of mind is.

Sendek was 3-21 against Duke. 5-17 vs. UNC (per stats I have available, which I think were a couple of years old... so they probably got worse.) For comparison Les Robinson was 5-7 vs. UNC and 3-11 vs. Duke.

I believe 3, if not 4 of Herb's UNC wins were vs. Doherty...some of the worst teams UNC has fielded in their entire history

Not only did Herb not ever beat them, his teams would roll over, play dead, get ravaged like a drunk prom date, and be ran out of the building by them... even on our home floor with the better team.

Herb actually beat Wake a few times, but the ACC tournament just did it for me. Getting assraped...twice in a row... by the worst team in the ACC is embarrasing.

so you faggots would rather beat UNC and Duke a few times
and miss the NCAAs

just like it was when Les was here and I was in school
and you little 19 yr old fuckers that think you have a good grasp on our program make me fucking piss my pants laughing so hard

you guys dont have a clue / Herb was a great coach and did big things for this program compared where it was at when he took over.

Quote :

Herb jetted off to Tempe b/c of unrealistic asshole fans that live in Raleigh.
How many other ACC Coaches had been to 5 straight NCAAs??????

Dont get me wrong, im excited to see Sid here / I am more excited about Sid being our coach than anyone else we were going after. I hope he does well here! I hope we dont miss a beat and right back in the NCAAs this year.

I also dont blame Herb for getting out of Raleigh where he was only appreciated by a few (a few that really understands how long it takes to build a respectable, clean program).

But you have to be a fucking moron to say that he wasnt a good coach. Thats the truth. No matter if you liked his style or not /// he was a good coach!

my roomate just stumbled onto a State b-ball press release from '81-'82, Sid's first year.

Valvano's quote about him was something to the effect of:

"Sidney is one of those guys who is a better person than he is a basketball player......and he is a great basketball player"

I haven't really looked at the whole thing yet, but it was pretty cool...........if only it was the '83 edition.

I remember the Les days, but don't base an entire history of a school on the worst coach it's ever had.

Herb was a good coach. We could do better, or we could do worse. IMO, it was obvious to me that we were always going to be solid team that never had what it takes to become a national contender. I was willing to take the chance on someone else.

As gunzz pointed out, no one said that. Of course we could have a better coach, but I'd be overly optimistic if I said there was a 10% chance that a coach we hire performs better than Sendek had us at. Hell, we could get someome who is without a doubt better at coaching than Sendek and still not get results better than we were. People don't seem to understand that sports are not a world of absolutes and certainties.

Ill give you an absolute right here.

As long as Herb Sendek was coaching this school we were going to be perennial underachievers and the arena was going to be half empty every night.

Now thats fucking absolute.

I'd rather have up and down results than consistent boredom, frustration, and blowouts to UNC.

you can't be serious. you realize this is a school with two different national championship teams and you feel it's overly optimistic to say that a new coach would have a 10% chance at keeping this program ranked in the top 65 in the country?

as a school we should have more pride than to think it special to make the tournament =/.

jesus

im for lowe doing as well as anyone

but this horseshit that we are a 2 championship school is old, and irrelevant. over 20 years ago we were a 2 championship school.

we arent anymore. We are/were a yearly top 25 ncaa team. now we dont know what we will be.

ok my bad, you're right. for whatever reason we used to be good, but we're not anymore and we never will be again. has nothing to do with who's running the program, just how things are and there's no changing it. no use in trying to be good again, waste of time, never going to happen.

You can't be serious in thinking we were just a "top 65" school. Ask any national basketball analyst and they would agree on the likelihood of improvement in a coach. There are not many coaches who can succeed and even fewer who can succeed in the ACC. A new coach would have to consistently finish 1st, 2nd, or maybe 3rd, repeatedly make it to the Elite 8 and beyond, and year in year out have us ranked top 15... the chances of a coach being able to do that are slim. What is so hard to grasp about that?

#5 in the nation overall.... the top 4 all went into the NBA draft, so techinically he was the #1 recruit.

Levi was #20 or so... Powell was top 100.... I think Collins was in that class, he was top 30 or so.

I think we brought it 5 that year (Powell, Hodge, Collins(?), Watkins, Evtimov) and the only one outside of the top 100 was Evtimov. (Edit: I can't help but think I'm getting some of these wrong... Did Watkins and Collins come in with Hodge & Co?)

I didn't follow Rivals/Scout back then, but per ESPN I remember our class being #2 in the country to a Duke/UNC/Kentucky/Kansas or someone of the likes
