But it IS hard to compose WELL through the viewfinder. Most people don't get in tight enough, especially with sports. Cropping is used as a crutch too often, which isn't a problem really, but you should try and get your images correct in-camera.
4/24/2006 10:20:30 AM
^^agreedyou don't want to shoot so tight that you can't make another crop if a customer wants an 8x10 but you don't want to shoot so wide that you need to crop every print. Most of my customers talk about 9x13, 13x19, and other non-standard sizes that only show up from people who print their own stuff at home, and they don't realize that those sizes don't have frames readily available like 8x10, 11x14, and 16x20. It is very hard to explain to a customer why this shot can't be made in that size print and if you think about it when taking the picture you can shoot just a little more wide and you will be able to make an 8x10 or a 4x6 print without having a bad crop.

No one has answered my question though...is 1700 worth upgrading from a d70 to a d200and about the dslr classes
4/24/2006 6:19:47 PM
i doubt a there is gonna be a class on Digital SLR specifically. because its more productive to teach somebody on film first. digital is considered a perk of anything in photography. its like having a class on calculators. anyway you get alot more quality. it is built alot more sturdy(and i mean a lot more sturdy) and you get alot more features. it feels more professional. if you are serious about photography i'd say it'd be good to upgrade, but if you are just shooting for the fun of it... stick with what you got and keep your money. if you plan on selling your D70 first. then upgrade because the difference in proformance and price would make it worth it in my opinion.
4/24/2006 6:23:08 PM
well, I'm still learning all the features that my d70 has, and I plan on being professional down the road...way down the road. I am very happy with the d70, but if its worth the money, then I think I'll upgrade in the future. My photographic interests though would probably make it hard for me to make money if I did ever become pro. I like taking pictures of things people wouldnt probably not want to pay a lot of money for. I guess I could do weddings on the side
4/24/2006 6:26:54 PM
i thought the same thing about my photographs... but oh well. who knows if people will buy them but i will find out soon enough. i would say for the future it is definitely worth the upgrade.
4/24/2006 6:29:21 PM
I just read my post above...it made no sense whatsoever.I like taking outdoor. My interests are old barns/barn equipment, waterfalls, mtn scenery, etc. All the stuff you can find in abundance in calendars at borders and barnes & noble
4/24/2006 6:33:13 PM
Two words: Stock photos. Not much money to be made in that, but definitely some if you sell yourself right. Not everyone likes photojournalism.HOWEVER, if you're serious, get involved with the Technician. It is a great stepping stone. I've learned a LOT and have been given some pretty rad opportunities already, after only a bit over a month. The more experience, then better. It'll be really hard to become a 'pro' if you have no formal experience to put on a resume. A portfolio speaks volumes, but so does a resume. Reliability is a big issue. If you can take AWESOME photos, but not on a consistent basis, then good luck getting anywhere.
4/24/2006 11:13:23 PM
hey ronny, have you actually tried stock photos? i've been thinking about it, but i don't want to just jump into it blind.
4/24/2006 11:14:57 PM
I know almost nothing about it, and it is REALLY hard to make any mentionable money off of it (some sites offering only pennies per image). You usually have to submit an image pack, instead of sinlge images. But again, I'm not sure, so defintely research it more.

I have a sony w1, 5.0mp, i know its no digital slr, but would it be possible to take pictures even close to what you guys are putting up? everytime ive tried to take "cool" pictures, they dont turn out all that great... any suggestions? settings that i can tweak on the camera?
4/25/2006 10:31:43 PM
I don't know about that particular model, but there's a lot more to a camera than its megapixel rating.Case in point: my supercompact digital Elph that's 5.0 mp but takes pictures that look like shit.
4/25/2006 10:37:43 PM
i took these shots with my ol' Nikon Coolpix 4300 (NON-DSLR), and i think they turned out decent. However, the output size was pretty small (4 MP), and they probably couldn't be used in many projects requiring decent photography due to the pixels from the London Eye in LDN:on a bridge in LDN:the rest of the series:http://www.pixelparlor.com/london_03-ZiP!-
