Speaking about media outrage ....

Quote :
"The media are outraged that Dick Cheney was too busy making sure his hunting buddy, Harry Whittington, was okay to contact the White House press corps (though the local media was given the whole story). Apparently, they think 911 should have been Mr. Cheney's second call.

Of course, the press has been more patient about notification about accidents involving certain past administrations. For example, you may recall that a month after 9/11, a former White House Co-President, Ms. Hillary Clinton, was a party to a hit-and-run. Senator Clinton was in a hurry to get to her local Westchester County, N.Y., airport on her way to a fundraiser—such a hurry in fact that her driver refused to stop at a security checkpoint at the airport entrance, running down a police officer and dragging him some 300 feet beyond the checkpoint before stopping.

The victim, officer Ernest Dymond, said, "I didn't know if we had a terrorist," and expressed his considerable dismay that neither Senator Clinton nor anyone from her office bothered to contact him in the hospital to check on his condition, much less apologize. "

I call BULLSHIT!!!

ATTN Liberals: He got hit by a 28 guage (if you are curious about what that is plz pm me ) at 30+ yards with #8 shot... That contitutes running a dog out of your yard. He was "peppered" not "shot." Credit your media for being experts on firearms of any sort.

Pussies don't know how small or rare a 28 guage is and they don't it's power(lessness.)

The only danger was that the old man could have an eye out out, that didn't happene... so he and Cheney both should be eligible for the next personal hunter safety courses.

I think those pics are doctored. I watched the press release and he didn't look that bad. I don't think he would be that messed up from bird shot from such a distance. (The original article I read said 70 yards-I see different figures here.) He's alive, shit happens, people live, some die, life goes on-leave him alone. Just because he's the Vice President doesn't mean he can't make mistakes too-the guys alive, so it's all ok.

Now Woody, would I make up something this good?

Sure it's from a biased source, but it's still true. Most of the main-street liberal press ignored or down-played the story.

This from the Wall Street Journal:
Quote :
"News 12 Westchester, a local cable TV channel, reports that a vehicle in Sen. Hillary Clinton's entourage " tried to bypass a mandatory check point at the airport" in White Plains, N.Y., injuring a county policeman who tried to stop the car from getting through. The headline on the News 12 report: "Clinton OK After Airport Incident." What a relief."

When do motorcades containing US senators stop at checkpoints? The security guard obviously didn't know what was going on ("I didn't know if we had a terrorist"-- don't you think he should have known?), and for all the driver in the motorcade knew, the cop was a terrorist. You do understand why someone driving a senator wouldn't stop when some random guy tries to wave them down, right?

You're acting like Hillary was at the wheel. Pulling the proverbial trigger, if you will.

oh yeah, OMFG (HILLARY) CLINTON DID IT!!1

Not that I believe that the pictures were doctored but the media (in general, including reuters and the AP wire) have published doctored photos before. Often unknowingly but still.

I <3 David Gregory:

http://dailynightly.msnbc.com/2006/02/the_week_that_w.html

Quote :
"THE WEEK THAT WAS AT THE WHITE HOUSE

It's been a rough and tumble week in the White House press room over the Cheney hunting story. Many viewers have written me with praise and plenty of criticism about my questioning of press secretary Scott McClellan. The debate about this story has focused equal parts on my colleagues and me as it has on the unfortunate facts of this hunting accident involving the Vice President.

Let me say at the outset that I was wrong to lose my temper at Scott McClellan. I've worked well with Scott since we first met during the 2000 campaign. Monday, he suggested my aggressive questioning about the disclosure of the hunting accident was a stunt for the cameras. He said this during a morning OFF CAMERA briefing, which undercut his point. Furthermore, I considered it a cheap shot. I said, "Don't be a jerk to me personally, just answer the question." I regret saying that because it's never appropriate to speak that way and because it created a distraction from the issues at hand.

Putting that aside, I do not apologize for asking tough questions about this story. I'm in the business of getting information -- as much of it as possible. The public and I don't always get as much as I think we deserve, but I keep trying. I also try to demand straight answers. Covering politicians, I have to work harder to get them. I have not made any judgments about the facts of this story as it pertains to what happened on the Armstrong ranch. I have stuck to reporting the facts. I do, however feel it's appropriate to push hard for full and immediate disclosure from our country's highest leaders about their conduct -- public and private. My view is, as elected officials with unparalleled influence over the lives of the American people, the President and Vice President owe the public information about their activities. I see myself as a proxy for the public that has raised questions about what happened and why the Vice President did not immediately disclose it. Furthermore, when a sitting Vice President shoots a man, it's a helluva story -- worthy of public notice and discussion. Therefore, I think it's appropriate to question the White House about why the Vice President chose to disregard the President's normal procedures for public disclosure. Mr. Cheney, in my view, acted as if he had something to hide. He also chose to allow a witness to this accident and the White House press secretary to spend three days portraying this as the fault of the shooting victim, Harry Whittington. Wednesday, Mr. Cheney changed course and took the blame. That invites press scrutiny.

This episode was also emblematic of how the Vice President chooses to communicate with the press and by extension the public. It also revealed tension within the White House between the staffs of the President and Vice President.

Yet the debate playing out in the blogosphere, cable airwaves and on talk radio pits the Vice President against an allegedly left-wing, overly cynical, prissy White House press corps in a tizzy because it wasn't the first to know and angry because it hates the President and Vice President anyway. This is nonsense. If you believe an accidental shooting by Vice President Al Gore would not be met with the same press scrutiny, I think you are not being honest with yourself. Have you Googled transcripts from the Clinton administration at the height of the Lewinsky scandal? The pursuit of information at the White House is often tense.
We push hard for it. Maybe you think we pushed too hard in this case. Maybe you think there was no grave harm in waiting to learn the facts of this incident for a few days. I can accept that. The way we do our business is not always pretty and we should be accountable for that. I happen to believe, however, on balance, our dogged pursuit of lots of information, all the time, is a good thing. I view the White House press corps as a proxy for the public. It provides fodder for important debates in this country. But then again, I do have a bias: I'm in the information-gathering business.

One final thought. In recent days, some people have suggested to me that the press corps has failed to recognize that this is a sad story. Two friends, one who happened to be the Vice President, were involved in a terrible accident. It could have happened to anyone. Our tough questions and our reporting failed to give that adequate attention. It's a fair point. I do think the Vice President himself helped to give voice to how painful this accident was. That's why I think it was appropriate he decided to discuss it publicly."

A thought struck me earlier today that I'd never considered before. We all know about the GOP's and conservatives' general contempt for the media, but does anyone really know where it started or why? Pondering the question earlier today led me to a likely culprit; the very public pwnage of Richard Nixon. Seems that the scorn began there and it's never really recovered.

The news media hasn't done much to help itself in this regard with its "if it bleeds it leads" mentality and patent disregard for accuracy primarily in more recent years, but it wasn't always like that. Food for thought (or quote bombing).

I'm not sure when exactly it started, but I know it predates Nixon. My parents/grandparents hated
network news before Nixon. The news has been slanted and inaccurate for a long time now. Only difference lately is that there are other media outlets (internet, radio,...) so that they can no longer control the spin like they used to. If you think the news has no bias that's just because it has your bias.

you can't be serious.

For example, when was the last time you saw a news story explaining how lowering taxes
helped the economy? Or how about a story about how guns help save lives in home invasions. Or
about how the war on the poor has failed to eliminate poverty despite the trillions we've spent on it.
Or about how cars are mostly safe and imposing rediculously high safety standards raises the price of cars for consumers. Granted, you can probably find stories somewhere along these lines but it more likely you'll see on the news

1. lowering taxes is just to make the rich richer.
2. guns are dangerous, run for your lives.
3. it's not fair the government doesn't give enough $$ to the poor.
4. car's could be safer, well insert product here really, it seems like half
the news is hand wringing about dangerous goods.

I'm sure other conservatives could come up with a better list than mine, but I've already spent to much time on stating the obvious.

^ that is what he is talking about. The types of people that go into/are good at media are the types of people who think a certain way. John Stossel did a 20/20 special on it. When polled members of the media proclaim liberal views and when asked why proclaim "It's not just my opinion, but commonly held fact."

John Stossel said it wasn't on purpose, it was simply group think.

um, I don't really think that group think applies to people who are spread throughout the country and are constantly connected to people outside their own groups. presidential administrations, for example, often start group thinking, because they're cooped up together in the white house, etc.

oh, and I believe that the mccarthy era is when the whole "liberal media" thing got seriously started

Two points: People in the media tend to hang out with and be friends with people in the media (they work together, after all). People in the media tend to watch a lot of the same media. The New York Times is distributed nationwide for a reason.
Secondly, people in the administration fly all over the country, meet a far larger swath of people that most media people which never leave their desks, and yet they still suffer from group think for the simple fact that "they tend to hang out with and be friends with people in government (they work together, after all)."

But in order for groupthink to be a factor they would need to not expose themselves to alternative views, which they do all the time. In fact, it's part of their job requirements.

^ Well, in the same sense that Cheney never leaves his desk.

^^ Not really. Just as exposing Kris to normal people has not affected his outlook on life, exposing a reporter to conservative nutjobs doesn't change their outlook. When all is said and done, the reporters go back to the water-cooler after awhile and are right back talking amongst other media people.

^ and ^^, exactly

The administration, when it meets other people, rarely goes beyond meeting heads of state. There was a story a while back in which Bush & Co. went to korea for several days but ate at outback steakhouse twice while they were there. They isolate themselves from everything, even local culture, when they visit other countries.

I was just looking it up myself...

Quote :
""I live in a bubble," Bush once said, explaining his anti-tourist tendencies by citing the enormous security and logistical considerations involved in arranging any sightseeing. "That's just life."

The Bush spirit trickles down to many of his top advisers, who hardly go out of their way to sample the local offerings either. A number of the most senior White House officials on the trip, perhaps seeking the comforts of their Texas homes, chose to skip the kimchi in South Korea to go to dinner at Outback Steakhouse -- twice. (Admittedly, a few unadventurous journalists joined them.)"
