yepthe fact that it's a 302 isn't why i'd like to have it, but it is worth a bonus point or two.

I've actually been making some progress. Thanks for all the recent "Bttt" and such. Should be working on the car around Christmas. I'm going to get the bellhousing ordered this weekend and should take about 5-6 weeks before they arrive. I've decided to go with a SBC. Yeah yeah, make fun of the Opti all you want, I don't think it should be an issue anymore. But I figured, since yall still pay attention to this thread, might as well give you an update. I don't know what to do with the ol' I-4. Any suggestions Ahmet? Figured I could rebuild it with new bearings/seals and throw it in another 944 with a blown engine (not hard to find it seems these days), and just turn it into a track car. But that's all another story, and after I get that v8 in there first.

so you're using an LT1? LS1's don't use optispark.
11/1/2007 9:50:40 AM
^correct. And I'm just going to sell the old engine.[Edited on November 1, 2007 at 11:40 AM. Reason : Because I forgot to say I'm selling my old Porsche engine]

^ wow aren't you a dick Things will be set in motion the first of the year. I've got other things going on right now, but the bellhousing was ordered and should be coming in a couple weeks. I've got an lt1 motor that's going to get freshend up with new seals, bearings, water pump, etc. I'm sourcing places for either a Delteq or MSD distributor to replace the old Opti. If anyone has any suggestions or experience with either, please let me know. I'm leaning towards MSD for now. I've yet to order a few things (ie: melling high volume oil pump, oil cooler, other misc. stuff) since I'm not going to be workin on it until early Jan.After the holiday season is over, I'll be taking the car to a friend's shop in Charlotte. The car should be up and running by the end of January (that's when inspection is due ) . Posted the Porsche engine up for sale on craigslist if anyone's interested.

They're probably just finishing the wiring now so they can get that sucker on the dyno for some tuning.
1/22/2008 1:16:18 PM
Okay okay... So it has still yet to be finished as planned. There have been quite a few setbacks that were not anticipated. The driver's side header ran into the steering shaft, sourcing a proper flywheel, and the motor mounts had to be completely made from scratch (which required my friend to make a jig and cost much $$$ and time). I have a few pics, enough to just show that this damn project is moving along, just not as fast as I had anticipated. This should be done within a couple more weeks. No promises, however, I am hoping my next post will be the conclusion.[Edited on February 6, 2008 at 12:05 AM. Reason : damn red [x]]

FIRST!WELL DONE HAHA SHOWIN THESE FUCKERS UP!
2/6/2008 12:09:06 AM
Ha, thanks. FWIW, the engine was rebuild by an ex-NHRA engine builder. The only modification from stock setup is a set of comp cams that should give it a nice mild growl and about 300rwhp. I'll go about replacing the heads, intake, t/b, injectors, etc later. A new suspension, brakes, and tranny are due before I give this beast any more power.[Edited on February 6, 2008 at 12:27 AM. ^sorry my typo on the "set of comp cams" i was tired (still am) and didn't bother with political correctness. I know you all know what I meant. As for the bets, they were just shit talking, something I know you all are familiar with on this board... I'm glad there's still some humor in this whole thing I wouldn't call the LT1 a "lesser motor." Older, yes. Its just makes more financial sense to me. FWIW, its not like this motor can't make the power I want. The man working on it is Cody Forbes. I swear, that guy is an encyclopedia of Porsche/Audi knowledge. Really cool guy. He has a 500hp audi 5000 somethingoranother.

2/6/2008 4:46:51 PM
^^^ good to see you're actually getting it togetherbut let's be real here: the LT1 is most definitely a lesser motor than the LS1, for a variety of reasons.
2/6/2008 8:27:17 PM
tis the truth
2/6/2008 9:36:48 PM
if this was monster garage this shit would have been crushed 5 years ago
2/6/2008 9:48:48 PM
2/6/2008 10:47:30 PM
oh yeah, while the LS1 makes big power very easily, the LT1 can make enough to motivate a 944 with as much authority as any sane driver would want...but the LT1 is a brick. The LS1 would've maintained the weight and balance.also, not that the LT1 is fragile or anything, but I know the LS1 will take a helluva beating.Basically, the only issue in my mind regarding a swap into a 944 is the weight difference (which alone would be enough to make me pony up for the LS1)...but anyone who claims that the LT1 isn't a lesser motor than the LS1 is an idiot.
2/7/2008 12:27:06 AM
meh, if he's on a budget and got a good deal on the LT1 it sounds fine to me. I'm very happy w/ the way my cammed LT1 does, and it has been dead reliable. mine puts down 325 rwhp and 426 rwtq through a stalled auto. w/ that kind of power in a what, ~3000 lb car it'll be plently to handle on the street. Can you fit 295 or larger tires on it? You'll definately need them!
2/7/2008 12:42:44 AM
^^ I understand and agree what you are saying. I'm not denying anything that you have said (yes the ls1 would be approx. 100lbs lighter than the lt1, and about the same as a 951 setup.) For the purposes that I was after (increased power and reliability over the 4 cyl.), which I feel the lt1 can provide just as well as an LS1. Other than weight, the only other "issue" is the fact that the LT's seem to run hotter than the LS generation. Again, that's not so much of an issue since 1) this is a street car that may only see occasional track time, and 2) I'm not making texas hp, just slightly above stock. I got a fully rebuilt LT1 (new opti, water pump, hv/sp melling oil pump, plugs, MSD wires, etc) with all new accessories including the cam for $1,000. Also comes with a 1 year warranty unlimited miles. Motor to motor, yeah, the LT1 isn't as refined or as exceptional as an LS1. However, I was stating that for my purposes, I don't see it as inferior/lesser. Plus upgrades for an LT1 is cheaper ^as for tires, I know the 944 can fit up to a 10" rim and i believe up to 275 (depending on the tire) without having to replace the quarter panel with a widebody.

2/11/2008 11:12:05 AM
GG in keeping the project alive and actually getting some work done on it. I'm looking forward to seeing this done, it is pretty rare that an actual project gets completed by folks around here. You probably owe a few folks $10 though.
