6/19/2006 2:44:56 PM
you guys really fucked this thread up
6/19/2006 2:45:28 PM
So my mom bought my grandfather a DVD player 4 years ago right....I went home to visit and found out that he thought was a cd player and has been using it for over 4 years now just to play the 5 maybe 6 CD's that he owns.LMAO when i found this out
6/19/2006 3:50:56 PM
This guy posted a thread last week asking what firefox was.
6/19/2006 6:06:57 PM
yeah....and what dickhead? I've never used it before and had it on my desktop. I understand that to some people that is retarded but guess what....every fuckin person on here at one point or another did not know what it was. In other words- Fuck you, sorry for my ignorance and lack of knowledge on something that i never used and for not recognizing that you have such amazing technical fortitude that you felt it necessary to call me out on something in order to make me look stupid.thanks [Edited on June 19, 2006 at 6:22 PM. Reason : .]
6/19/2006 6:21:20 PM
wow. it's okay for you to call granddad out since he's not here, but god forbid somebody call you outjeebus
6/19/2006 6:23:03 PM
oh jesus.here comes the bitch-mobile.
6/19/2006 6:23:28 PM
lol sounds like he'd make a perfect candidate for tech support
6/19/2006 6:23:54 PM
now we're back on track
6/19/2006 6:27:18 PM
naw- the grandpa thing was funny and a lot more common sense than firefox. And i didn't actually ask what it was, i asked what special features it had that were usefull? i am still wondering this actually- Just kinda pissed because he deleted that thread because he said it was a "stupid ass question" and he was helping me to "save face" but then calls me out later on it
6/19/2006 6:28:53 PM
welcome to tech talk
6/19/2006 6:29:50 PM
your grandfather using a dvd player as a cd player is no where near as dumb as a college student asking what firefox is instead of just googling. i use our dvd player as a cd player/stereo all the time. the guy had 6 CDs? he probably doesn't have an extensive dvd collection.
6/19/2006 6:32:38 PM
yeah the point was however- that he didn't know what DVD's were- Kind of the funny, cute old person scenario. And no- it's def. not dumber than not knowing what firefox is. I have had a computer since i was 13 and have never used firefox.always used regular old Internet Explorer or AOLExplorer which has served me just fine. Why would i have any need for firefox or by the "norm" should have known what it was as a student???[Edited on June 19, 2006 at 6:40 PM. Reason : .]
6/19/2006 6:39:05 PM
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=Firefox+vs+IEAnd Mozilla has been all over the news. It's common sense to all but the TECHNICALLY INEPT.
6/19/2006 6:45:55 PM
OK- As a horrible example: It would be common knowledge for anyone to know how to browse the internet but not necessarily to know every different way to do so. As my shitty example lets look at something stupid like "Doing Laundry". Everyone should have enough common sense to do their laundry and some may do it very well. however if someone has used say Tide their whole life and it has worked fine for them- would it make them stupid if they didn't know what a different and potentially better brand was???i mean i know this is a retarded example but i can guarantee there are a very decent chunk of individuals out there who are relatively knowledgable and capable of using a computer that aren't aware of the "BENEFITS" (not what it is) of Firefox
6/19/2006 6:52:49 PM
you're really helping your case herelemme tell ya
6/19/2006 7:20:36 PM
the grandfather thing is funny b/c of old people not being up on technology.i agree that anyone that considers themselves not to be technically inept should be able to google firefox easily.
6/20/2006 12:43:56 AM
holy shit did this guy actually just admit to using AOL explorer while defending himself against being technically inept?
6/20/2006 6:41:23 AM
god i love tech talk
6/20/2006 9:46:39 AM
shit, I wasn't even trying to get a rise out of him.
6/20/2006 9:51:30 AM
hahahah this thread has taken a major turn for the better. The key difference here is:Someone bought your Grandpa a DVD player, he used it to the best of his ability. He ATTEMPTED to use it by putting in a cd, and it played, so he thought it was a cd player.YOU installed firefox, still didnt know what it was, didnt bother to even open it, or google it, or maybe ask a friend about it. You didn't even make an attempt to use it or figure out it's use.

i didn't bump this thread up in february to scroll through pages of shit to find a few gems. oh well.Apparently my dad has just figured out what a scanner is. I've been scanning copies of all his "important" papers lately. And then he wants to print out these scanned copies. who knows why? so he has more shit to scan when he rediscovers the wonders of the scanner. he also types with two fingers which i find funny.people at work have not discovered the number pad. its amazing how much time you can save by using it. I want to walk over and just type it in for them...seeing them struggle to find 8.
6/26/2006 2:15:57 AM
i never use the number pad. its a waste of time to move your hand all the way across the keyboard like that when they are within your fingers' reach
6/26/2006 7:15:07 AM
if you've got a lot of numbers to type in a row and worked retail you can blaze through the number pad though.
6/26/2006 9:01:27 AM
How about when it is a 'support person'?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvVp7b5gzqU
6/26/2006 9:07:24 AM
^^^You obviously don't do any numeric data entry. Accountants live by the numpad.
6/26/2006 9:12:11 AM
that and if you've already got your right hand on your mouse, it's quicker to move your right hand to the numpad than having to use both hands to get to all of the numbers on the keyboard.
6/26/2006 10:07:40 AM
I <3 numpad

Someone called in earlier and wanted to know how to A delete emails and B how to defrag the website so the emails are purged from the server. After much ado, we ended up setting the computer to defrag, because she wouldn't stop calling until something was defragged. I also taught her how to right-click, she was amazed that it could be done.

Calling HP Technical Support, I mention I'm trying to enable secure web communication via SSL, get asked "What's SSL?". Hung up in extreme frustration.

In the daniels computer lab today, I met a kid who did not know how to use AIM, he said he wanted to chat with his friends for to do some homework. I assumed he just didn't know where gaim was on the linux machines, but it was much much worse. He had never used aim before in his life, he didn't know how to make a buddy list, I had to show him what aim was and how to use it, he was trying to download the windows version from aol's site.

About once a month we get this same customer that opens up a trouble ticket asking us to restart the PC Anywhere service on their server. So about once a month we Remote Desktop to their server and restart the PC Anywhere service.
