I'm of the opinion that there's more to Snape than we saw in this book. Rowling deliberately let us see the dark side of Severus to cast doubts on his loyalties. Dumbledore's death scene could be interpreted many different ways, and the way I chose to see it was as Dumbledore sacrificing himself for the good of the order - Snape would have died if Dumbledore had not, because of the Unbreakable Vow, and in my opinion Dumbledore was already dying from the problem with his hand and the potion he just drank. He spent the whole book preparing for the moment when he would have to make his sacrifice by giving Harry all the information that he would need to stand on his own two feet and fight alone just like he knew he will have to do in the end.Honestly, I just want to believe that Snape is still working as a double agent loyal to the light side because for Harry to have been right about him being "evil" all along is just mediocre treatment of one of the most complex characters in the series.
7/18/2005 4:59:51 PM
Snape is working on double secret background status.
7/18/2005 5:10:46 PM
^^ my thoughts exactly

I haven't even read any of the books, but judging from the movies and other things I'd have to agree with you guys. Snape just seems too "obviously" evil to actually be evil, like he's really just a red herring of sorts. We're suppose to think that his allegiance sides with Voldemort, when in fact he's been on Dumbledore's, and Harry's, side all along.[Edited on July 18, 2005 at 7:50 PM. Reason : asdf]
7/18/2005 7:50:11 PM
That or he just wants Voldemort out of the way so he can take over.
7/18/2005 7:54:15 PM
I don't think Snape is evil. I think when Dumbledore was pleading with him he was actually begging Snape to kill him (like urging him to not back out now, and finish their agreement).I agree that when Harry and Dumbledore went back to the castle, Dumbledore already knew what had to happen. He probably already had it scripted out like a play and he NEEDED Snape there to kill him (for some reason we will learn later).I think Snape is going to play a big part in the final novel.
7/19/2005 2:20:22 AM
heres a question, why was snape's face filled with 'hatred' when he was looking at dumbledore? was it that he hated what he had to do? or that he truly hated dumbledore?[Edited on July 19, 2005 at 8:14 AM. Reason : S]
7/19/2005 8:11:24 AM
I think Snape's face just looks like that. The same way Lupin is always looking more thin and ragged every time we see him.
7/19/2005 8:41:44 AM
I'm guessing even if Snape didnt know he had to kill Dumbledore, he used occulemency (sp?) and Dumbledore told him to do it when he was on the ground dying.

did anyone catch the part about the phoenix at the funeral when the tomb was going up?
7/19/2005 3:37:06 PM
Note as well that it seemed like Snape was keeping Harry from casting the cruciatus curse. I really think Snape was wanting to have Harry prepared for was to come.
7/19/2005 6:05:34 PM
Psh, so what Dumbledore's dead, just talk to his portrait in the Headmaster/mistress' office, I mean duh.I think Snape's still walking the good/evil double agent fence. I don't see how he could have been on Dumbledore's side and made the Unbreakable Vow to kill Dumbledore if Malfoy couldn't do it. I suppose you can argue that Dumbledore was slowly dying already and had planned for Snape to end it like this. Dumbledore is the sort to do all in his power to die in a well organized way, giving Harry all the info he needs first, but I'm saying that I don't entirely buy it. Which came first, Dumbledore's blackened hand or Snape's pledging the Unbreakable Vow?
7/19/2005 6:09:30 PM
^ Jon, yeah, like he was keeping him from doing any stupid illegal curses that could get him thrown in jail or otherwise be forced to waste time in the justice system when he should be getting ready for taking on Voldemort.
7/19/2005 6:11:31 PM
^ in addition to that, I think Dumbledore asked Snape to kill him so Malfoy wouldnt. He didnt want Malfoy to do an Unforgivable Curse so Snape did it instead.
7/19/2005 7:51:05 PM
^^ I hear tell you dressed up like Tonks at the midnight sale. Are there any truth to the rumors?!?
7/19/2005 8:09:44 PM
I've only half read the above comments - but I haven't seen where any mentioned my theory - so I'll throw it out there. I think that Dumbledore was incorrected in his assumption of what the objects are that are containing Voldermort's soul. I think that when he attacked Harry's parents he had not yet put his soul in the last object (don't remember the name and I don't have the book in front of me). I think he killed Harry's mom and attempted to kill Harry - but was unable to and was badly weakened. He knew that he had to get the last part of his soul put somewhere and he put it into Harry. That would explain why they are so greatly linked, why Harry sometimes knows what Voldermort is doing/thinking, and most importantly it explains why the prophecy says that neither can fully live while the other is alive.
7/19/2005 8:28:17 PM
^ like in Harry's scar?
7/19/2005 8:44:24 PM
Yes, his scar is another symptom of Voldermort putting the 7th part of his sould in Harry.
7/19/2005 8:48:10 PM
I know someone mentioned that Regulus couldn't have done it on his own. I think the second person could have been Kreacher. It could not have been a full wizard, so an underage wizard or a non-wizard. Kreacher could be trusted to follow orders without question, since he did it following Draco.

HEy Peoples!Ok, the day after the Harry POtter and the Half-Blood Prince came out, there was a home video made. It was a guy with his video camera, and driving past the Barnes and Noble in Dallas Texas while screaming the ending of the Book. This video is freakin AWESOME, I'm trying to find it again, and I can't, and I gave up and decided to post something so people can help me find it. If you can, please, IM me, or post it. It's hilarious. And after that video, they put the women's voice screaming, "AHHHH..You Bitch! You Bitch!" (because she found out the ending while standing in the line) and the guy's voice in a scene with Darth Vader and Luke...it's funny...I hope someone can find it...Thanks!

!!DONT READ THIS POST IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK!!When the Phoenix started to sing, it was so well-described... Acouple tears leaked out of me unexpectedly... I still have hope for Snape being good. Notice that when Dumbledore was pleading right before Snape AvadaKedavra-ed him, he didn't say, "Severus... please don't kill me..." oreven just "Severus... please don't..." He only said "Severus...please." Maybe that means please DO kill me so that certain informationcan't fall into the wrong hands, or DO kill me because I won't surviveanyways, or DO kill me because it is essential to Harry's victory andVold's demise... I think Snape is still loyal to Dumbledore and theGood Guys - but he proved to the Bad Guys that he was utterly loyal tothem, thus gaining their complete trust - he has become the ultimatetwo-faced insider mole. He did the Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa viaBellatrix UNDER DUMBLEDORE'S ORDERS (as he told Draco when they spokeduring Slughorn's Christmas party while Harry was spying under theinvisibility cloak), meaning that when the time came for Draco to killDumbledore (which was Lord Vold's order for him to carry out) andcouldn't, that SNAPE HAD TO, AND SNAPE WAS ACTING UNDER DUMBLEDORE'S ORDERS!Meaning, it was ESSENTIAL for Dumbledore to die!I also believe that Draco Malfoy will be redeemed with Snape, and bringhis family up from the dirt of society - maybe everybody but his dad,who is just a bad apple through and through. At least his mom,Narcissa, unlike her sister Bellatrix, seems to have a couple ofredeeming qualities, such as the ability to trust, and the ability totolerate and love Draco. I actually felt sorry for Draco in this bookfor the first time in the whole series. In addition, when Dumbledore visits the Dursleys and told them that itwas a shame that they had treated their son Dudley so horribly andabused him, and they were confused because they had obviously spoiledhim rotten and favored him above all other things in their lives... Getthis - I believe that... DUDLEY WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A WIZARD!!! MUHAHAHAHAHAH! Only his parents had squashed all of the magic out of him! And, I'm so glad Harry hooked up with Ginny... It is a real and obviousreflection of his parents' relationship. Harry looks like his dad, andGinny looks like Harry's mom with her long red hair. I think thateventually, Ginny and Harry will get married. Hey, even their names aresimilar, with double consonants in the middle, and a y at the end. Ginny is so fiery and loyal and not like all of the other simperinggirls at Hogwarts - and a quidditch player too - it was my hope thatthey would finally realize how much they'd get along. Also, Fleurredeemed herself by still loving Bill despite his disfigurement. I likeher much more after this, and I can't wait to read about their wedding.Best books series ever, dog.[Edited on July 20, 2005 at 5:58 AM. Reason : -]

^ considering that they call kissing "snogging," I shudder to imagine what they'd call that...
7/21/2005 12:54:23 PM
They call it snogging? That name sounds like you blow your nose or something. You're right, I don't think I wanna know what they call a threesome.

7/21/2005 1:19:18 PM
I hope a few of you out there keep in mind that this is children's book series, written for children, not adults. I was thinking within that context, obviously.
7/21/2005 1:21:55 PM
So who is of the opinion that Harry himself may be a horcrux? Just a rumor I read somewhere, thought it might be interesting to get a conversation going about it here.
7/21/2005 11:20:27 PM
yeah i've heard that...seems interesting, but i highly doubt it
7/21/2005 11:26:32 PM
I would seriously doubt Harry being a Horcrux because that means that Voldemort would have to kill part of himself in order to kill Harry. I cannot think that Voldemort would go to that much trouble to ensure that he will be immortal just to have to kill one of those parts in order to get rid of Harry.
7/21/2005 11:48:20 PM
^ I really dont think Harry is a Horcrux but just for the sake of argument, even if he was, I doubt Voldemort would have any hesitation about taking him out if it meant that he'd have 4 other Horcrux's left (one including himself).
7/22/2005 12:09:12 AM
but he went there when harry was a baby with the purpose of killing him, but maybe as a last effort he made harry a horcrux.doesn't really seem to work though.very interesting idea, but not entirely plausible
7/22/2005 12:35:35 AM
what is a horcrux??
7/22/2005 9:05:40 AM
It's a spoiler.Actually, it's the opposite ! Tupperware for the soul. But you can't get it from a sales representative. You have to like, totally murder someone. And then you can put a piece of your soul in the horcruxtupperware. And until some meddling kids destroy them, you're essentially invincible. On that note, doesn't anyone think it'd be a stupid idea to store your soul in any way on the person you've been prophecied to kill? If I were Voldemort I'd've put my soul in the carpet or something. But not my arch nemesis whose existence challenges the very essence of my being.Unless of course this is going to be one of those body snatcher things.
