damn man i need to read up some before i post loli bet its faster than the ss anyway... unless i made a speedy wing for it, but then what would i call it?
1/4/2005 2:14:27 AM
hey btw i wouldnt recommend the GWS recievers on the glider for your dad... they are kinda glitchy at any distance. i've got a Berg 5 in my enigma... its ROCK SOLID. has some sort of circuitry that locks on to your transmiter's signal and will actually ignore the signal from another radio on the same frequency. it also filters out bogus signals. i've not had mine glitch once even though my antenna is in a carbon tail boom and the rx is right beside a servo.

http://www.compfused.com/directlink/557/thats some crazy shit...
1/7/2005 11:36:37 AM
Guarantee you he's been doing a LOT of flying to get that good. I've seen some pretty amazing shit myself, but none quite that balls-to-the-wall!I bet he's also probably wadded $10000 worth of helicopter stuff to get that good, too. One reason I never got into helis is that the minimum amount you could spend in the fuel-powered arena was around 600-700 bucks. Had a few friends that had $3000 machines.
1/7/2005 12:02:02 PM
so how is everything goin for everyone?i've been working pretty much constantly (i'm at work now) trying to get our shit ready to go out to winston salem and cut out some piers... we are supposed to go tuesday!
1/9/2005 6:33:11 PM
I wish I could say good, but I am home sick. I've had some bug here for over a week, and it looks like I have to go to the doctor tomorrow. I should have gone sooner.
1/9/2005 6:52:41 PM
any updates? i havent even tossed my glider since my last post here... i've been working a shitload and a half.
2/7/2005 3:47:49 PM
I haven't done anything lately myself. Just haven't had the time or money...doctor has been getting it all lately.
2/7/2005 7:52:19 PM
I gotta whine about this some...I could've bought a new Futaba 7CAP with the money I've spent on doctor's visits this year so far. Maybe a 9CAF...maybe.
2/7/2005 9:15:34 PM
damn dood
2/8/2005 1:23:36 PM
My ass is going flying today. Like damn shortly.
2/13/2005 2:33:55 PM
Well, I'm back. Fuck all a ya nikkas that didn't but could have!Of course, the soccer fields were fulla folks kicking balls and shit. So instead, I flew up on the big field. And this time of year, the grass wasn't too high to take off. Flew some good flights. Had a good time. But now I have to clean up the damn plane. NOT my favorite jorb.
2/13/2005 6:14:20 PM
glad you got a good session in! that castor sludge is a bitch tho... i was able to go out and toss my glider the other day... the park manager at shelley lake thought it was cool as hell and talked to me for a while. i gave him a few web sites to look at.
2/14/2005 6:18:46 AM
I met this guy out there...Victor...he had a DLG. I can't remember which one he said he had, but he got me to thinking about 'em.Bryan...where did you get your Enigma? Also, what kind of servos are you using in it?
2/14/2005 9:32:52 AM
i met victor out at dix one day. i think he has a Mountain Models DL50. from what i've read and seen, they look like a very good buy at (i think) $70 for the kit. theres a ton of info and a lot of posts by victor about the MM DL50 on RCGroups. I got my Enigma from http://www.nesail.com and i think they are on sale right now. I'm using GWS Naro F+ servos for flaperon, a Hitec HS55 (or maybe HS50?) for rudder, and GWS Pico F+ for elevator. I'm pretty sure the F+ servos are a bit overkill, and they actually poke out a little under the wing.
2/14/2005 8:40:16 PM
Looks like DLG's are out of my price range for a while, though he said that the DL50 is dirt cheap. None of the others are, though. What I've been thinking here lately is that it might be nice to build a winch for sailplane launching. Know of any plans for one anywhere?
2/15/2005 9:39:41 PM
i dunno... i'm sure someone on the sailplane forum on rcgroups would know.the dl50 flew nice... quite a bit of building tho.
2/16/2005 2:27:15 PM
I used to have a tower hobbies trainer but i guess i turned it too sharp in the air cause the wing snapped in half. so the fuselage ran straight into the ground bending the driveshaft of the engine and tearing about everything else up, though the electronics were still fine.I used the servos, etc in a great planes spirit ARF sailplane for a while until i missjudged the distance and ran into a power line destroying the wing. i guess i could buy a new wing for like $60 and keep flying it.i am thinking of getting a helicopter and was looking at the lite machines corona electric heli. anyone familiar with this or know of another decent helicopter i could use with my 4 channel radio? i think the corona would run around $300 for everything i would need.
2/16/2005 8:03:56 PM
I just read a review on the Corona, and they touted it as being a great beginner's copter. And yes, you can use a standard aircraft 4-channel radio with it...it's a fixed-pitch rotorhead, so you don't need separate channels for collective and throttle.
2/16/2005 10:16:02 PM
If I walk out the door and the wind's not blowing too badly, I'm going flying.[Cartman]Screw you guys. I'm going flying[/Cartman]
2/20/2005 11:22:12 AM
And so I did.Pretty proud of myself...you can actually roll a 3-channel plane (rudder, elevator, throttle) and pull off Immelmans!Think I've had enough for now, or at least until my crystal comes in for my Feather receiver for the Beaver.
2/20/2005 4:05:28 PM
hehe cool man! i went to Boone and flew off one of the overlooks about 45 minutes north of Boone on the Parkway. The wind was blowing good and my Enigma flew excellently! After cruising around after launch 1 for about 15 minutes I brought it in and added a few ounces of ballast. The plane penetrated very well with the balast and the flapperons in the reflex position. I swooped down and made a nice high speed pass by my friends and i... that thing shrieks like a freaking demon after a long dive!
2/21/2005 1:08:34 AM
That sounds fun as hell. Just curious...for that 15 minute flight, did you have your flaperons set for minimal sink rate, or most efficient, or what? Uhhh huh huh huh...you said "penetration."
2/21/2005 9:21:49 AM
honestly the only reason it lasted 15 minutes was because i did a nasty fast fly-by and landed it to add ballast. Durring the whole flight i was changing the camber quite a bit... I had the flaps up in reflex mode whenever i was doing airbatics (rolls are more axial) and there was really plenty of lift for doing that sort of thing almost continuously. whenever i needed some more altitude, i brought the flaps down to 'normal' setting and the plane would climb like a demon.
2/21/2005 2:16:22 PM
Well, fuck. I burned up my Hitec Feather receiver yesterday.Turned on transmitter, plugged in battery, advanced throttle, and watched the prop turn two times, whilst a nasty hot burned electronic smell emanated from my plane. Funny thing is, I can't see anywhere that's burned up on the board. This baby is going back to Hitec. Really sucks. Folks are saying that it ain't such a hot receiver, but it worked really well for the three or four times I used it.
3/11/2005 9:51:03 AM
you sure it was the reciever? i've smoked a number of ESCs in my day, but never a reciever...if you need to borrow one in the interim, i have extras.[Edited on March 11, 2005 at 10:56 AM. Reason : d]
3/11/2005 10:52:37 AM
It's the receiver. It smells kinda nice. I tried the receiver with a known good battery pack (4-cell receiver pack) and nothing would happen.I've never smoked a receiver before either. You got an extra rcvr that will use a single-conversion crystal?Apex RC Hobbies has a whole shitload of GWS receivers right now...cheaper than ANY mail-order place i have found yet. Might just go get one from them.
3/11/2005 11:19:32 AM
i think i have an extra gws rx you can use, but if you end up ordering one then lemme get a few things too and we can split shipping.By the way... Tomorow we're gonna have ideal slope conditions at Falls. W / NW winds @ 10+ mph. I'll be out there with the Enigma and Pibros. Hopefully I wont crunch the Enigma again, but i'm going to try to dynamic soar it. Someone on RCGroups said they had theirs goin 120 without breaking it, and that was with 12oz of ballast.
3/11/2005 3:54:00 PM
Dude...this is RETAIL! They are over offa hwy 64 outside of Apex. Pretty good shop.I would rather deal with this guy than Hobby Master(bater)s.
3/11/2005 7:27:07 PM
New stuff...seems now I have access to a wide format plotter. I can print anything 24" wide or less, and up to 150' long. I am psyched. This means printing airplane plans, and I'm thinking about making a business out of it.The only thing I can't do is make reproductions of existing paper plans. But then that's what Kinko's is for.I guarantee I can beat their prices on wide format printing by a decent amount, anyway.
3/26/2005 12:46:58 PM
coooool
3/28/2005 10:41:19 AM
Know anybody that needs a set of plans printed? I got everything up and running. Pretty much limited to pdf or AutoCAD 2000 or lower formats (including dxf).BTW, been flying my Beaver quite a lot, as I can take it anywhere. Taken quite a bit of abuse, but still hoppin'...My improv "carrier" takeoff off a picnic table didn't turn out so well...but was still fun trying. Loops take a bit of a dive, and I got the wings to flutter going inverted w/ full down elevator. Produces pretty spins too!
3/28/2005 10:29:46 PM
dan there is an airfield here by my house that i just found out about. there are supposedly about 20 guys that fly every saturday there. i am gonna have to check it out. if you are ever in charlotte we will roll there.
3/28/2005 10:45:27 PM
the wings fluttered while you were inverted? i wanna see that thing fly man! can you come out to dix this weekend? i should have the nanner ready.
4/6/2005 3:32:57 PM
I've got my plane finished but I can't go flying for a while. time conflicts with my uncle who won't let me fly by myself yet. I'm going to be flying on the B.A.R.K.S field close to burlington
4/6/2005 4:04:06 PM
If you hain't got that much experience flying, then it's probably not a bad idea to wait for him, unless you have it here and want one of us "REAL" experts help you out (NOT really the best ideer).Bryan...as far as the Beaver goes, I succeeded in wadding it Monday evening over at Athens Dr HS. Snap rolled it into a spin and went to pull out of it when one of the struts snapped loose and the wing folded. Smack from about 20-30 feet up. Now this comes after I was flying earlier, and the last screw fell out of the gearbox (the ones that hold the motor in), and the motor free-spun in the mount for a sec or two. Temporarily fixed that with some E6000 multipurpose goop that I had in the car. But, wait...there's more. I am SO GOOD...that it's back together, though looking a little worse for the wear. Hot glue is the best thing I have found for working on foam, as it has a little bit of flexibility to it, and it bonds to foam really well...IF you use a gun with a low setting (and I have one of the nicer ones; benefit of having a wife that used to work for craft store). And new screws for the motor too.Dix...here I comes...
4/6/2005 10:02:46 PM
so yes on this weekend?hows aboot saturday eh?
4/7/2005 10:59:06 AM
actually its more a centimental thing. my late grandpa got my uncle into flying and they spent alot of time together doing it. my uncle hasn't flown much if any since my grandpa died so when I became interested in it, there was like a revival of his interest.I definately don't want to be flying by myself yet. I understand the physics of it but applying it from a remote is going to take time to understand. plus my mom would kill me if I didn't fly with him for a while
4/7/2005 10:50:46 PM
Good call. Even though I perfectly understood what was going on and what should occur given a certain control input, I wadded my trainer no less than three or four times before I learned how to fly. I happen to be very good at fixing broken shit. That trainer weighed a fucking ton by the time it met up with the garbage can because I had scabbed it together so many times. Folks wondered how the hell a .20 sized trainer could track so well and fly so fast. A bit of ballast does wonders in that department.Back to the original point: I had been flying control line for a while before I had gotten into RC. I thought I could teach myself because I had so much experience building and flying CL. Boy, oh boy, was I wrong. Hence the wadded trainer. Sometimes I left the field with quite a bunch of small pieces, and the wing broke in half and crushed the tips several times. I don't know HOW THE HELL an OS 20FP took so much abuse and lived...but it did, for more than 12 years. The first couple of years required no less than three needle valves (they break very easily in a crash).
4/7/2005 11:38:19 PM
Bryan...evidently today didn't work. The fucking wind needs to die down. That and I have been busy all day trying to do some map work (including trying to create a complex 2D linetype in AutoCAD).Tomorrow, if the wind is manageable, then I shall be out there. Maybe early. Like in the fucking AM, at sunrise, if I can pry my fat ass outta the bed.
4/9/2005 7:32:28 PM
...and of course sunrise didn't happen. However, dustm and I both got some stick time in. Got to see his new HOTliner 'nanner today. That fucker is sweet.BAstard makes me jealous. He comes out to the field sporting a brand new Multiplex Royal Evo 9 radio. I have got to have one of those. It is just too sweet.
4/10/2005 10:18:40 PM
thanks for letting me play with yer beaver i had fun today despite almost waxing my plane a couple of times... but hey, they gotta go sometime. i'll let ya fly it as soon as i get the bugs out... from what i read the nanners are supposed to be pussycats; hopefully thats possible with the extra weight mine carries.whats this linetype fiasco?
4/11/2005 1:36:02 AM
Just trying to figure out how to embed a shape into a linetype. Been reading up on creating shapes or shape fonts. It's actually pretty simple, as shapes are simply vector graphics, as opposed to raster images. That was the big deal, was figuring out how to create shapes. Embedding them in a 2D linetype is actually easy; no different than embedding font characters.Pretty trivial, but nice to know now. I'm sick of using the same linetypes in my drawings; time to get creative.

4/12/2005 10:15:36 PM
Tell your uncle I'll paint his airplane if he rents it to me cheap.Hell, I might paint his airplane just to get some decent paint on there, for the hell of it...
4/12/2005 11:26:15 PM
well then it woulnd be a cesspoolna
4/12/2005 11:30:05 PM
i'm goin out tomorow afternoon to dix for some tuning/testing of the nanner... any who care to watch or join lemme know.
4/14/2005 4:11:04 AM
What time?
4/14/2005 9:18:46 AM
6:30... gotta charge a battery and top off another. i may set up crow on my radio while waiting.
4/14/2005 10:05:35 AM
that makes 6:30 today really...
