lol the call center sounded great until i found out it was RTI

who was my former employer. Not going back there. d'oh.


anyways... got a call at 4:58 on Friday from a recruiter. Missed it because I was in the garage working on my car. Called back at 5:06, left a message. She didn't call back Monday. Left another message on Tueday just in case. Still no call back.

Received a "please re-apply as you're qualified but we had to change the job ID" from the State. Problem is, the job hasn't been posted yet to re-apply. So I'm waiting on that.

I've got roughly 20 applications out with the State and local governments, and another 30-40 out with private companies and firms.

Phone ain't ringin yet, though.

I worked at a call center after my freshmen year in college. That job was cake. I would do it in a heartbeat if I was currently unemployed. Beggers can't be choosers...gotta pay that bar tab!

By all means, that's 100% right. And shoot, I recommend you go for one of those positions. It will at least get you in with RTI, who have many projects for electrical engineers such as yourself. It could be your foot in the door.

I burned my bridge to the ground with RTI, or else I'd be first in line.

Very hard to find a job in NC I think. I want to stay in NC because my family is here. I target at big companies. But they are more difficult to enter than small ones. They only hire 1 or 2 Chinese male new grads every year.

Lots of Chinese in IBM North Carolina? I dunno that.
It seems to me that in technical companies, they like to hire India students other than Chinese students. An explanation to this is India people have expanded their power and reject Chinese. Last week, I attended an event held by Qualcomm RTP. There are 3 to 5 times more Indians than Chinese.

If they have to hire you an assistant to heavily edit any document you write, they aren't going to hire you. Simple as that and nothing to do with race. Most technical positions are heavy on documentation now, so writing well is an essential skill. Did you do non-thesis master's degrees?

^ The relation between India and USA is much closer than China and US. Also Indian speaks better English than Chinese.

I don't know if they're Chinese specifically, but definitely plenty of people from India, Philippines, and surrounding areas. I work with very talented people, but they lose a lot of clout when they can't easily converse with me and articulate their ideas. God forbid, they/you have to interact firsthand with clients on the job.

There are a ton of quality high-tech small companies in RTP, I'd recommend going after those. What do you want to do? I see you're EE but that's still a pretty big area

^^I don't think they are Chinese. Because there are rare opportunities for Chinese to work in IBM Charlotte or IBM RTP. Most Chinese go to silicon valley.

^ Yes, you are right. I may try more on small companies. But the way of becoming permanent resident is sooo much longer than big ones. I'm working on control and network.

I understand. China didn't teach a lot of English before. We need to learn all by ourselves. When I entered the college, my English level was probably like a child in US.

Have you considered enrolling in business ESL courses? I know that Durham Tech and Wake Tech offer some to teach business English and also American business customs, etc. They prep you for interviews, writing a resume, etc. I think some of the classes may even be free.

shoot- your suggestion that large corporations do not hire Chinese people is completely untrue and mostly unfounded- I don't think your experience speaks to the reality of corporate hiring here in NC. I am Chinese, first generation born here both of my parents are from Beijing, our family has lived here in cary/raleigh for 30 years. My Mom works at IBM and has several both indian and asian coworkers in just her group let alone in the whole company. A lot of her friends (90% of my moms friends are also native born and speak in Chinese regularly) are at similar big company companies (Cisco, Cree, Qualcomm) and have been there for 15+ years. ALL of these aforementioned people have somewhat broken english.

The hiring of "Chinese" undoubtedly has not gotten worse over the last couple decades, if anything it has become dramatically easier for native born asian and indian people to get corporate jobs here at RTP or anywhere in the US for that matter. I, myself, with a below-3 GPA Bachelors in EE/CPE worked at Webassign (call center duties) a couple months the summer after graduation and then landed a full time job in July. I don't think its your nationality/race that's limiting your ability to land interviews, probably just your communication skills but even that shouldnt be a huge deterrent from interviews because technical knowledge is still #1 for getting your foot in the door. Certainly, there is no stigma against hiring asians in the area.

Of course there are a lot of Chinese in RTP. But as far as I know, many of them are moving from somewhere else, CA, Canada, even China.
You must haven't read my post carefully. What I'm talking about is Chinese male new grads, the visa holders.
And it's useless to use your case comparing with mine. You are American citizen. You can ask your parents how long they got the citizenship.

none of my parents or any of their friends had citizenship until years after they were employed. the fact that they are still here means that they were able to obtain work right after they graduated because none of them had any money before or after they stopped working for the university. and this was 30-40 years ago when the perception of Asians was completely different (in a negative sense) compared to now

and im not trying to troll or anything, but no they did not move from anywhere else. the reason my parents are close with a lot of their friends is because they were classmates in China. they all came here to America and attended NCSU.

i actually have some job references and email lists you can join that stem from the Chinese school here in raleigh if you want to pm or email me about them, I also can pass you on to a few of the recruiters that my parents know and get you onto some of their email lists if you want.

30-40 years ago it was much easier for people to get work visas in general. After 2001 and the inception of the Department of Homeland Security, it has become more difficult for people to secure work and student visas. I run into this situation all the time at my work. What's even more fun is when the person is on an F-1 student visa and wants to convert to a work visa. DHS makes it a huge pain in the ass and a lot of companies won't even bother with sponsorship in those cases.

In fact, NC is relatively poor comparing with CA, new England. Only few Chinese new grads from NCSU find a job at local companies. Many of them move out.
