I might just go ahead and order it from Amazon. They usually have a very generous return policy.

wait, whats my fault in what? I told you to get the 560 ti... not the vanilla bland one.
9/21/2011 11:44:37 PM
Its not the blandest one, it's the Super superclocked version. I might just wait and see how this runs BF3, then make the call.

oh ok, well you should be straight anyhow.

when you are breaking world records, people care. Also nothing is "rigged" those pots are made for that hardware.and people are using LHE much more now than LN2[Edited on September 22, 2011 at 11:29 AM. Reason : _]
9/22/2011 11:25:51 AM
it's rigged in that some clown has to pour LN2 into the pots from a thermos. there's no sustainability, automation, or semblance of polished design outside the fit of the actual pots. also, what meaningful world record comes from this? I don't see the winners getting contracts to do HPC work.
9/22/2011 11:31:24 AM
and you are talking about super computers, that is way more sustainable for consumers.Do you not see KingPin on the side of the RAM pots? He became such a famous LN2 OCer that he was given the chance to design pots and put his name on it.Personally I am an air cooler, but I find it insane these guys can get CPUs down to -140C and colder. Anyone that is a hobbyist OCer would naturally be interested.[Edited on September 22, 2011 at 11:42 AM. Reason : .]

9/22/2011 11:47:24 AM
Define hobbyist OC'er, people here OC to get the most out of their computer. I guarantee you nobody here is flashing custom MB roms or tweaking their OS to maximize performance for a run at 3d06.I used to OC back in the day and had custom air heatsinks on my NB, GPU & CPU and had some great fun at it. But it was at home and albeit fun, it quickly lost it's appeal as you can't do anything more without constantly buying different hardware or constantly F'ing up your system. It's really just for those who have the money to spend on a bench and hardware and don't care if they F' it up they have a separate computer they pour money into just for gaming, etc. It's just not something people get into if they can only afford a single rig.[Edited on September 22, 2011 at 11:50 AM. 9/22/2011 11:51:31 AM
Seems pretty real to me. All you need is a large LN2 tank with insulated hoses running down into each pot at a certain amount of LN2 per hose depending on pot size. Will it be cheap? No. However it is completely possible, especially for people trying to break the new world record by AMD at 8ghz+^^ Hobbyist OCer is normally PC Gamers who buy hardware known to OC well with good cooling.I just posted the damn pictures because I thought some people would find it cool to look at, that is it. If you don't like LN2/LHE OCing then don't comment on the picture or the method of OCing.Just like if someone posted NVIDIA stuff and you like AMD/ATI, you just don't comment. There now everyone is happy.[Edited on September 22, 2011 at 12:05 PM. 9/22/2011 12:16:09 PM
I have never heard of the term hobbyist OCer before, as I think you just made that one up. The computer nerd in me drools over that system, but it's patently unrealistic, and that's coming from someone who usually gets flamed for pushing the tech envelope.
9/22/2011 12:19:37 PM
CPU is Thermalright HR-02GPU is Thermalright Shaman^ you have got to be kidding me. Hobbyist: A person who pursues a particular hobby Overclocker: A person who is in the process of running a computer component at a higher clock rate (more clock cycles per second) than it was designed for or was specified by the manufacturer, usually practiced by enthusiasts seeking an increase in the performance of their computers.Basically everyone that OC is an overclocking hobbyist or vice versa with the two words; I don't see how it could be taken any other way. I've been OCing for over 10 years and the term OCing Hobbyist is used all over OCing websites and forums.[Edited on September 22, 2011 at 12:27 PM. Reason : _]

I find it interesting and I follow it, I guess the main difference is that these guys are doing it for no other reason than to compete for the highest overclock. Pretty much everyone else that can't afford it, overclocks their current system (hoping not to break it) and finds the highest stable 24/7 overclock they can run for gaming purposes, then leave it, not to overclock again until they upgrade their hardware again. That's different than people with benches. But yes, k|ingp|n has been around forever and I've enjoyed following his success and his new hardware dedicated for overclocking 'enthusiasts'.Blackdog, where's your aftermarket NB heatsink and your RAM heatsink? Just picked up a Corsair GT 120GB SSD for $180 at Amzn. Perfect timing for BF3.[Edited on September 22, 2011 at 12:36 PM. Reason : /]

I am sorta scared to OC, I figure it the PC does what I want it to do I'm good, but if'n it doesn't I'll just buy a better part for it. I just leave OC to the people that know what they are doing, or if I would someday like to really learn about OC, I'll build me a new system and experiment will my older system.
9/22/2011 12:49:58 PM
There is nothing to be scared about in regards to OC. I can recommend some very simple components that make over-clocking a matter of a few clicks in a Wizard. Overclocking 15 years ago was an exercise in patience.

so regarding overclocking.I'm entirely stable with my 2600k hitting 4.5ghz @ 1.34v. I know this is not a great vcore but seems to be average. Bumping the vcore down even one notch causes it to BSOD with 101 stops in 30 seconds. Oh well.I'm using a CM Hyper 212+ with one fan and am seeing max of 68-73 C on the cores in Prime95 Blend. Core 2 is always about 5 C warmer.I really like the 212+ but the attached fan does not slide all the way down or it hits the RAM. I suppose not a problem if you dont use both banks but all mine are full.tl;dr 2600k overclocks ez

Yea I have to stick with this system for a while even though now is the best time to upgrade with the 2500k beating $1000 i7 CPUs. You can build a Sandy mobo/CPU/RAM for under $450 and still have a 2500k. Sadly I'm tight on money and I'll probably just get Ivy later on.You can push the 2500k/2600k almost to 5ghz on mid-level air cooling. I've seen it done on high end air, but you are talking $100 just in fans (like my fans).[Edited on September 22, 2011 at 1:04 PM. Reason : _]

Yeah, I love the 2600K, but as you can see, the 2500K boasts awesome OC scores too.
9/22/2011 1:03:56 PM
I'm pretty confident I could push this thing to 5.0ghz (or close), but I have set a personal Vcore limit of 1.35v....I am paranoid
9/22/2011 1:06:23 PM
Liquid cooling made me feel safer, but it's still a risk. Have to be willing to fuck shit up to get 5.0

honestly I want to change cases first to the Silverstone Raven2http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811163173I have had my case forever it seems like, I mean it does everything I need to and I've modded the shit out of it for cable management (and upgraded fans). I've just had it too long.

9/22/2011 1:16:44 PM
So if I did a slight OC from say 199.98*17.5 to 204.19*19.1, would think be safe and effective, and can I use the stock cooling for this you think?
9/22/2011 1:18:57 PM

9/22/2011 1:19:02 PM
you got lucky with that 2500k thenedit: im not trying to be an ass, but is that stable? i can boot at insane multipliers and low vcores but under stress testing it will fail. My 4.5ghz @ 1.34v is the first to pass 8+ hrs of Prime95 blend.[Edited on September 22, 2011 at 1:26 PM. Reason : ds]
9/22/2011 1:24:08 PM
Nobody can tell you for sure your CPU can reach any speed, all hardware is different. The only thing someone can do is look at speeds that a lot of people are hitting using a certain voltage and cooling. Always monitor your temperature and don't exceed Intel's max voltage for the CPU if you want to stay inside the warranty.

Start low, one step at a time. I'd try just upping the FSB multiplier first, then the frequency. My guess is you could do 200x18 without issue, but i'm not familiar with that CPU's ability to OC
9/22/2011 1:52:11 PM
I have read that it can be OC to 3.8-3.9ghz without issue.
9/22/2011 1:58:01 PM
most likely yesmy Q9550 will do 4ghz, but I'm waiting to see if BF3 needs that much speed from the CPU or not because of all the DX11 features it sounds like it will be GPU heavy. Beta starts in 5 days for people who have pre-ordered BF3 or MoH. Everyone else will be able to play beta in a week from today. Also Prime95 is a pussy stress test compared to Intel Burn Test. IBT can tell you in 30 mins what it takes Prime95 20hrs to tell you. Nothing will make your CPU hotter than IBT, if you can pass 10 passes at max settings of IBT you are solid.[Edited on September 22, 2011 at 2:05 PM. Reason : _]
