Didnt see it on here yet, but this is a pretty big link in my opinion.Tydreke Powell commented yesterday that he and other athletes were sent to Durham to take some mental aptitude tests. The UNC staff told them to purposely get all the answers wrong so that they would be entitled to extra assistance from tutors. If they can't pass the basic reasoning tests they were given, they get extra time for exams, tutors can read their tests to them, things like that.Well.... some of the PP folks are connecting the dots. It looks like Catinia Farrington, who is the girlfriend/business partner of Fats Thomas, works at a Durham facility that administers tests like this. Not sure if she is connected or not, but it wouldnt surprise me. If so, then this scandal has come full circle and is connected all the way around

One of my favorite things about this scandal is going on Facebook, seeing a State/Duke post a link/status about this and then seeing all the Carolina fans throwing out things like 'everyone's just jealous', 'everyone does it', 'the Carolina Way is still as strong as ever', etc.

I don't even know how to begin criticizing that dogshit of an article

Deflect, deflect, deflect. The Carolina Way.

Art is responding to the comments on that article too. Lots of fun. He's in the "real world".

^^^^ I thought it was a dumb episode in American history, but the Editorial Board's headline reminds me of John McCain berating Donald Fehr during the baseball steroid meetings in Congress:"Do you not get it?"There is a minimum level of aptitude and academic achievement that is required for any individual to be a student at a university able to progress on and graduate with a degree in his or her chosen field. Part of these requirements that university require of all students is that they do their own work and put forth an honest effort. THAT'S IT! Athletics has absolutely nothing to deal with that statement at all. If the Daily Tar Heel Editorial Board think the above statement is too difficult for student-athletes, then they are stating one of two things, or both:1.) The student-athletes in question should have never been admitted to the university.2.) The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill should not have varsity athletics programs.[Edited on November 12, 2014 at 12:34 PM. Reason : .]

^^^^The article as of itself may have a point. NCAA needs reform. "Student" athletes need more time to graduate so they can focus on sports during eligibilty, and on studies later(if they don't get drafted). But if the article somehow ties that in to suggest UNC not be punished, then its horsehit of course. But credit to DTH, they have been surprisingly critical of UNC during this whole scandal [Edited on November 12, 2014 at 12:34 PM. Reason : ]

But they're suggesting we admit "students" to universities to play sports...and then not expect them to attend class and even attempt an education.

i've said before that i'm not above wanting UNC to literally close its doors b/c of this... but i'll go ahead and say it y'all: i wouldn't be at all sad if roy williams had a heart attack from all the stress. b/c honestly, the dude has to be sweating bullets every hour of the day.
11/12/2014 4:46:10 PM
You mean "surprised", not "sad", right? lol
11/12/2014 4:47:45 PM
maybe i should've said i won't be sad when he has a heart attack.whether he really has one or not, he's got to come up w/ some sort of medical excuse to quit before next season, right? i'll be amazed if he finishes this season, but then again he's never done anything to hurt a player, not one day in his life.
11/12/2014 4:49:53 PM
no, he said he's never done anything wrong, ever.
11/12/2014 4:52:00 PM
UNC needs to decide if they want to preserve their athletic legacy, or their esteemed academic reputation. They can salvage one of those two with some decisive reform, but not both.I'm actually looking forward to this thing splitting the academic and athletic communities within the university. That is going to be a hoot. So far they're pretty unified. But we all know the in-fighting is just around the bend. Om-nom-nom-nom it's gonna be GREAT.We need someone to pose as a "concerned UNC student" to write an editorial in the DTH about restoring the academic honor of the university by de-emphasizing athletics. Get that debate publicly going to counter the PR machine's unified message. Let's get this party started.[Edited on November 12, 2014 at 5:02 PM. Reason : ]

^NO longer live in the area either, but when I did I seemed to hear DG say lot of "this goes on everywhere, folks" and stuff like that.
11/13/2014 8:12:44 AM
^ There's nothing stopping David Glenn from spilling the beans on those schools. Produce the evidence.
11/13/2014 8:31:37 AM
Sure, a lot of what he talked about does go on everywhere. There are easier courses that athletes know to take, and when you walk into a freshman level elective and see an athlete, you know its an easy one. Athletes at every school get free passes. However I think we can definitively say that they do not get free semesters at every school. One thing is getting an easy course here and there, being allowed to miss extra classes, having extended deadlines... but what went on at Carolina does not go down everywhere.
11/13/2014 8:35:24 AM
really really really sick of "it happens everywhere"ok so even if it does. they are the ones that got caught, and attention needs to stay on them.
11/13/2014 8:40:03 AM
When I was a was in school I had a work study working for the academic support staff so I at least have a little bit of first hand experience here. Sure the staff there figures out what classes are best to take to give guys the best chance to stay eligible. There are no free classes however. Due to the fact I got to see what classes athletes were being assigned to I of course took advantage and took a few myself. My best comparison is those classes were equivalent to high school classes. If you showed up and could memorize stuff you were in good shape. If you didnt ever show up to class or if you didnt at least spend a couple hours memorizing things you still would fail the class. Yes they were easier than just about every other course I took, but they still required work and for you to learn some stuff. Also, unlike your regular students, the athletes were getting constant updates from professors on their progress. Several times a semester we would get reports about where they stood and if they were coming to class. There were people specifically hired to follow the ones around who werent at least showing up and making sure they did. Guys who werent doing well or werent showing up ended up having to spend extra hours in study hall with tutors and the coaches were in the loop as well for disciplining guys who werent at least showing up for class.Based on my experience that is what I generally expect happens at most schools for athletes. It was so far away from what happened over at UNC though its mind boggling how they continue to even try to justify it.

I mean I had a sociology class where the actual exams were the practice exams straight from the book. No football or basketball players in that class though. A smoking hot volleyball player was though. Pretty much the only thing that made Dr. Islam's class bearable.
11/13/2014 9:04:31 AM
I was in an AFAM class at State of about 30-40 students...there were like 4 basketball players in there, a couple football players, a few women's bball players too. And that class was a complete joke. Me and like 3 friends all got A's or A+ in there. I don't recall ever having tests. But we pretty regularly had presentations to make. Maybe once a week or once every two weeks we had group and individual presentations. And homework (admittedly, on like a high school level) at least once a week. Our final project was an individual project that we had to present in front of other sections of the class and other AFAM professors. So while it was a really easy class, there was legitimate work required. The athletes went to class regularly...maybe even more than I did. Some days a manager would wait at the door and make the players sign in before class. This was by far the easiest class I ever took. But it was a far cry from any kind of paper class or no-show class like what has gone on at UNC. We actually had to do work. And it was graded pretty leniently. But it's not like you could turn in recycled papers and/or just not do work. I guess my point is...yeah there are easy courses everywhere. And athletes definitely know about these classes and benefit from them. Perhaps I'm incredibly naive but i just don't believe that no-show or paper classes exist everywhere.[Edited on November 13, 2014 at 9:22 AM. Reason : ll]

I had Will Roach in my English class my freshman year. Didn't realize he was a basketball player til the end of the semester, so he acted like a normal student. Think that was it for classes with athletes that I knew were athletes, though I was in engineering.[Edited on November 13, 2014 at 9:40 AM. Reason : /]
