essentially yes
3/4/2009 4:46:55 PM
was the deadline like 3 pm PST? how did it get done at 4 o' clock-ish?
3/4/2009 4:48:21 PM
the trades have to be submitted to the league by 3pm, then, pending approval, they are announced.
3/4/2009 4:48:49 PM
deadline at 3:00 ET, deals can be done after if the NHL is notified
3/4/2009 4:49:08 PM
wowthat's all i can say pretty muchi mean, i was pretty much joking yesterday when i said that stuffi'm happy to have him back (hence my name), but....dangwe get rid of an injury prone player, and get one in returnmaybe this will spark cole intoa tear late this seasonwowww
3/4/2009 4:53:44 PM
So... lineup for Friday (against the LOADED Flames)??:Staal/Cole/RuutuLaRose/Cullen/WhitneySamsonov/Brindy/EavesRyan/Helminen/Walker
3/4/2009 4:53:51 PM
can't wait to see 50 more one-on-one's with Cole losing his edge and/or missing the net. he has good speed, but could never seem to put the puck in the net when he had a breakaway or a man back.
3/4/2009 4:55:32 PM
3/4/2009 4:56:37 PM
THE RETURN OF
3/4/2009 4:57:16 PM
Maybe Staal will stop being so emo now that he has his BFF back, and Samsonov play well with him last year as well.
3/4/2009 4:57:52 PM
I also wonder if this move was made to bring some fans back into the arena seeing that he was a fan favorite and all....doesn't justify it totally obviously, just a thought to kick around....
3/4/2009 4:58:16 PM
JR on NHLN right now. Says this was the only deal in the works
3/4/2009 4:58:40 PM
imagine cole and ruutu on the same line...good god
3/4/2009 5:03:14 PM
Staal trying to handle the entire defense by himselfRuutu laying on the ice because he missed an overzealous hitCole laying on the ice because he's Erik Cole (read: dove/fell)
3/4/2009 5:05:33 PM
^stanely cup contenders!

^^ Yes. I have to check with puck_it because he's on my account and might want to get a ticket strip, but I'm done.
3/4/2009 5:09:30 PM
yea whats up with getting these washed up players...Samsonov is all washed up, and Ruutu is so freaking injury prone...why did we get these guys???
3/4/2009 5:12:08 PM
I dont love the trade anymore than the rest of you but I have come to the point where I can see the rationale. Moving Williams (who may or may not be able to regain his old form) clears 3.5 million off the cap for next year. They get a player who will help for the stretch run, who hopefully will be able to get Staal back on track, freeing up that money to resign Ruutu or Anton. Would I have loved to keep O'Sullivan and Kotalik? Yeah but Kotalik is a UFA who will command as much money as Cole for next year, and you dont know what O'Sullivans willingness to be here is with the whole situation with his father being a psycho. Basically we traded Williams for Pitkanen, a 5th and a possible 2nd? Not sure how that whole second round pick situation will work out if we get one or not.
3/4/2009 5:14:13 PM
You can spout whatever sarcasm you like...the problem with Erik Cole isn't talent, but effort.I watched him take shifts off for five years. I watched him dive for five years. I watched him screw Eric Staal out of a hat trick because of a ridiculous flop at the blue line when we were up a goal with twenty seconds left.I gave up on Erik Cole a long time ago.
3/4/2009 5:15:53 PM
I love erik cole and am happy to get him back on the team... but honestly who wouldn't wanna see patrick o'sullivan play in raleigh... kids has talent
3/4/2009 5:21:48 PM
WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH MY FROLOV JERSEY NOW
3/4/2009 5:27:58 PM
then you must've given up on staal as welli've watched him take shifts, and a game or two, off, and watched him as he slid down the ice after being taken down with his hands up at the refs looking for a call, as the rest of the team back checks.now that my sarcasm has run outi'm still not sure what to think reallyi am disappointed that we had patrick o'sullivan in our grasp and a 2nd round pick, that would've been nice in rebuilding for the futurebut, as much as i like williams, he hasn't been able to stay healthy, and i doubt he would be able to return to his previous form...and you could say the same for cole. and hopefully cole's injuries are pretty much done (he's missed 20 games the past three seasons, compared to williams' 78). maybe this will spark the team, who knows, but it should put some more seats in the arena.
3/4/2009 5:30:53 PM
Staal takes shifts off, yes. Most players do.Erik Cole takes a vast majority of his shifts off.The Erik Cole move used to be to put your head down, beat a guy to the faceoff dot, and turn the corner on him. In recent years, it's to separate yourself from the puck at the blue line when you try to dodge past some one.As I said, I was done with Erik Cole a long time ago.
3/4/2009 5:33:31 PM
3/4/2009 5:34:08 PM
Well I can't argue your point about his move...But everyone wanted another big forward...and we got oneI hope it works out though, for the team's sake
3/4/2009 5:53:32 PM
the part of this trade that no one's talking about is the return of the beap-beap-neck-brace jpg
3/4/2009 6:00:56 PM
3/4/2009 6:08:08 PM
This was a trade to please the fans, that is all. Cole is a fan favorite, seats will get filled. If we can get into the playoffs, it's icing on the cake. If we don't, at least we got one of "our guys" back. It's an excuse for whichever happens. But with the moves Buffalo, Pittsburgh and NYR made, and the move Florida didn't make, you had that feeling we had to do something also.
3/4/2009 6:38:02 PM
calgary and boston made some good moves as well
3/4/2009 6:46:37 PM
Another thing that should probably be mentioned is that despite many attempts, Justin Williams and Eric Staal never displayed the slightest bit of chemistry together. It was a disaster any time they were paired up. We needed Justin Williams to be a top line forward here and I don't think that was going to happen (injuries aside) since Mr. Staal is too picky with his friends.
3/4/2009 6:49:16 PM
yea and in the offseason eric and erik can move to vermont and adopt a child together
3/4/2009 6:51:38 PM
Another thing this suddenly brings to mind is that now I have to deal with even more Eric Cole, Erik Staal, Erik Stall, etc etc misspellings. On another note, I don't really think this will put anymore butts in the seats. Maybe a handful, but the fans here always have somebody to latch onto as a fan favorite, and don't really seem too fickle about guys getting dealt. A lot of people were sad when guys like Commodore and Cole were traded, but I never really saw it affect anyone's fanship. Now, on a final note...
3/4/2009 6:55:20 PM
Glen Wesley, Director of Development for Defensemen, heard on 99.9 discussing JASON McBain. Quality.

BTW, I don't hate Dancin' Granny. I hate Pete Soto for putting the goddamn camera on her for 90 seconds EVERY GAME.

so...Ruutu - Staal - ColeWhitney - Cullen - LaRoseSamsonov - Brind'Amour - EavesBayda - Helminen - Walker/Conboy
3/5/2009 2:10:53 PM
When Jokinen comes back, either roll him on the 3rd or the 4th. Helminen will be back in Albany. Brind'Amour has been non-existant, I have no problems with him being on the 4th line at this point, demote him. Scratch Bayda for the rest of the year, barring an injury to another forward, and raindown hellfire on anyone who considers resigning him for next year. Nothing against him, but he offers nothing special that we don't already get out of the other forwards available. I would roll Conboy on the 4th line from here on out, we need someone like him in the lineup.I'm fine with the 8/9 of the top 9 though, and I'm sure some of those will shift around if necessary and a line gets hot. My real question is where do they fit in all of these guys next year, also to be worded as who the hell isn't coming back?Ruutu - Staal - Cole Whitney - Cullen - LaRoseSamsonov - Jokinen - EavesConboy - Brind'Amour - WalkerSutter, Bayda, and random AHL'ers after that.

Anyone notice something up with Erik Cole's stats? [Edited on March 5, 2009 at 3:19 PM. Reason : ]

ESPN is doing that in all their articles. I noticed it in a Crosby article a couple weeks ago. Worst goalie in NHL history.
