well. i understand how text files work. the text file itself hasn't updated in half an hour. and it just says "working. . . " at the bottom. (and yes i know text files don't update themselves -- i work with computers most of the day) i've been rooting around in FAHmon. i looked at the "messages" and i see this in there:
2/21/2008 11:40:41 AM
hmm, so you have fahmon installed...and the client added? if so just leave the text files alone it sounds like fahmon tried to read that text file (which shows progress on the current WU) and had some sort of problem reading it (because you had it open?)is your cpu still being used 100%?]

Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Spare Time! What Is It?Essentially the http://folding.stanford.edu/ uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor. The North Carolina State University (http://ncsufolding.com) Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the top 100 in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the company of anyone who would like to help. All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-PS3) on it with great results. How Can I Help?Go to http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download,download and install the software. Our Team Number is 59.Click here - http://www.ncsufolding.com/?page_id=4 for more detailed installation instructions.Windows Computers:We recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions. Mac and Linux Computers:There are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the regular console clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.PS3:PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! So will I need to buy the VMware workstation download?I'd like to see if I can do this free. After I get Vista64 up and running good next week, I'll get back on here and see what I can figure out.
2/21/2008 2:38:02 PM
You can definitely do this for free. VMWare workstation costs $. VmWare Server is free.I would think you would install VMWare Server, then create a Linux VM, then either do it again or use VMWare Converter (free) to make a copy of the existing linux box. But I would still go ahead and run a single SMP client on windows while you're playing around with the virtual boxes
2/21/2008 2:41:02 PM
Oh yeah, I'll have SMP running as soon as I can get Vista64 up and running.BTW, how much do you think my old pc is worth to someone:Athlon XP1700 OC to 2.01 gig of RAM80gig HD 400W PSUAsus A7something motherboardRadeon 9250 GPUMid ATX case$150? maybe...[Edited on February 21, 2008 at 2:53 PM. ok i'm trying to install the smp on my dual core work laptop but i can't get past the installi understand that you can't leave the username and password blank but 1) the user name is "My Name" and i don't have a password for logging into XP2) when i enter "My Name" and then make up a password it says "cannot log onto "My Name"" and the install closes itself
2/21/2008 4:19:48 PM
1) your windows account must have a password. and that password can't be blank. whatever username and password you have for your windows account, you put it into that DOS window.2) if the above doesn't fix it, you might need to eliminate the space in your username.now if you really don't want to change your current windows account (you should be using a password anyway), start a new windows account with admin privlidges, don't use a space in the username and use a strong password. then use that account info when you set up the client.]
2/21/2008 4:21:59 PM
and then will it run in the background even when that user is not logged in?
2/21/2008 4:43:57 PM
If anyone wants to see an example, I pre-configured a VM machine for you, just go get the folding CD and replace the fold.iso with yours.n/m[Edited on February 21, 2008 at 5:12 PM. Reason : link removed]

^ is that a preconfigured virtual machine or a linux live folding cd?
2/21/2008 4:58:06 PM
n/m, i thought it would be easier to use the folding CD but maybe two xubuntu installs will do it tooyea, i guess ideally you'd use xubuntu install & install F@H on that so you can close it without losing your work[Edited on February 21, 2008 at 5:13 PM. Reason : .]

this must be in the thread somewhere already, but about 10 minutes of reading turned up nothing...is there a way to specify what projects you want to do based on how they perform with your specific CPU?
2/22/2008 3:17:05 PM
No
2/22/2008 3:22:21 PM

2/23/2008 3:58:06 PM
wow I'm at 1500ppd according to the current list (puts me at 11 for the team), I don't think i've ever been that high for this computer.
2/23/2008 8:47:23 PM
^^i've been getting similar messages with the beta version that is for single core machines...wont get past like 2 percent without saying some i/o shit...was gonna take pics tomorrow
2/23/2008 9:57:38 PM
um...i think mine messed up...it finished like 4 hours ago and it still hasnt updated my points...i was reading the stuff and it said it had 3 failed attempts to upload the work...its at like 5 percent now so i know it got a new work unit...here is my fahlog:
2/24/2008 10:01:48 PM
I've had a client stall for several hours because their WU receiving server, or whatever it is that receives completed WUs was having connection issues. It will resolve eventually.
2/24/2008 10:13:00 PM
i hope you are right...it still has yet to upload
2/25/2008 10:11:54 AM
Congrats team!, we're now #84!
2/25/2008 10:46:38 AM
is there anyway to manually upload it yourself? i'm almost at 24 hours now
2/25/2008 12:57:27 PM
restart the client
2/25/2008 1:06:03 PM
tried that a few times...on the 7th failed upload...i'm just worrying cause i dont want to finish my current one(at like 30%) and then have it upload that one and forget about my last one...or go past the deadline
2/25/2008 2:07:46 PM
There is nothing you can do until the accepting server is ready. Even if you finish another WU AFIK it will continue to try to upload any completed WU indefinatly. Standford had a lot of servers down at last check.

I'm not sure if you will get points for it or not, but keep up the good fight.
2/25/2008 9:14:21 PM
so right now i'm owed about 3,500 points.....this is very discouraging
2/26/2008 5:48:04 PM
so i was trying to figure out how we had ~72K points yesterday...clicking through team members to see who had a big day...then I noticed I had 8K points yesterday!!! Can't really figure out how that happened, i haven't really changed anything (running 3 SMP clients and a bunch of standard clients). Also a big part of it was j33pownr with 6K points yesterday!! GG making it into the top 5 producers in your first couple weeks!we're doing pretty well as a team, i really like the look of our trend line.lets try and pick up our daily production so we can match that line!http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=59]
2/27/2008 9:33:06 AM
Yea I saw that this morning. It was because both of my smp machines finished 2 WU's each yesterday. They seem to finishing faster since I installed the F@H SMP Affinity Changer.
2/27/2008 9:59:19 AM
I hope to have my Q6600 OC'd today, and up and running 2 SMP clients using the Affinity Changer. I was having problems last night installing the client, but I guess I wasn't installing as adminstrator or something. I think I have it figure out though. That should help that trend line a little bit.I need to turn my PS3 back on too. Forgot to switch it back to Folding after I watch some movies this weekend. Can't wait to see what this new rig will do.

2/27/2008 10:38:58 AM
I put it on my e6600 (XP 32bit) and my work computer xeon 5160 (vista 32bit), both running one SMP. The xeon 5160 is definately faster but I havent checked my other one since sunday. I will check when I get home but both seem to be finishing WU's faster.
2/27/2008 10:49:16 AM
why would the affinity changer affect that though? if you're only running one smp client whats the need for it? i'm not criticizing, just curious how it actually helps.edit: heres a huge thread about the affinity changer if anyone is interested...http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=136[Edited on February 27, 2008 at 10:57 AM. I found the affinity changer over the weekend on some F@H forum where some guys were putting it on dual/quad core Intel cpu's with success. I will try to find it later tonight when I get home. Maybe I misunderstood how they were implementing it. I just think my computers are folding faster because fahmon says the ppd has gone up (~10% on the xeon). The second post in what you linked to said "Congratulations on the Affinity Changer, mostly for the 1.0.3 version which works more effectively for the C2D processor family ... "[Edited on February 27, 2008 at 11:03 AM. Reason : ]
2/27/2008 11:02:11 AM
yeah i don't doubt that it works...everyone in that thread was raving about the shorter frame times, but i'm just trying to understand how it actually shortens frame times on a C2D system running a single SMP client (when the cores are getting maxxed out anyway)
2/27/2008 11:06:42 AM
hey does it fold quicker on vista or xp?
2/27/2008 11:31:59 AM
^^ I can guess that the affinity changer preloads the next bit of information to the memory instead of completing a task and then searching for the next information. Which is why the A.Ch hurts AMD cpus's so bad because the memory controller is on the cpu which would take away from the overall resources being used to fold.^ As for XP or Vista my current config is apples to oranges (e6600 at 3.6Ghz > xeon 5160 at 3.0ghz) but when I get home I will install F@H CMP on the vista partition of the e6600 to get an apples to apples comparison. I would guess XP is faster because of less overhead but im sure someone out there has compaired the two and knows for sure.
