Yeah that is very much hypothetical.
12/1/2014 12:37:13 PM
Yes, it is "hypothetical", but it's not unrealistic* to say if we swapped VT, UVA, or even Duke for GT that we don't have a pretty good shot at 4-4. Should have used a more accurate word.We just had a really bad schedule this year, nothing we could do about it, but we did the best we could given how late our BYE weeks came and how bad our schedule was laid out by the ACC.
12/1/2014 12:52:18 PM
Listening to last night's Dave Doeren show in the background while working and after being asked Jacoby's runs out of the bunch formation, Doeren basically said that one of the reasons they didn't call many designed runs earlier in the season was because he didn't want Jacoby to get seriously injured and have to burn McClendon's redshirt. Figured that with a month or so between Carolina and the bowl game, that he could open up the playbook. Not really surprising, but kinda interesting.

I think we can safely say that the FSU game was not as big of a moral victory as we thought at the time. Basically, every team who played FSU took an early lead, only to lose in the 4th quarter. Even Wake played FSU close for a half.Doeren still has major issues with in game adjustments and preparing for better teams. All of our wins were against awful competition. But he got the wins, so he deserves some credit. And anytime we beat UNC-CH, that is a big win, regardless of how terrible they are. It's nice that he got his first conference win this year, and improved his conference record from zero to three wins, but that is not the standard he should be at. We brought him in to win conference championships. We fired our previous coach for winning 7 games, so obviously that is not acceptable from this coaching staff. If he cant get above .500 conference record by year 3, it's clearly obvious that he can't succeed here.[Edited on December 1, 2014 at 2:41 PM. Reason : ^Stupidest reason to limit our offense.]

This was a solid season compared to expectations outside of our own fan base. For me, "success" next year means just keep doing better. I think 4 conference wins and 8 overall (not including bowl results) would be good enough considering what we've settled for in the past. If we keep improving and VT has another down year, then we could very well get 5 conference wins. Add that to 4 non-conference wins (should be a sweep of Troy, Eastern Kentucky, ODU, Southern Alabama) and we could finish 9-3 plus a good bowl. But I think that is the ceiling for next year. Would love to do even better, but it would mean upsetting FSU, Clemson, or Louisville and I just don't see that happening yet. I'd still be super happy with 8-9 wins.
12/1/2014 3:46:46 PM
^At some point, we have to beat the better teams in our division. Realistically, our best chance for that to happen is next year, before we go back into rebuilding mode with a new QB for another 2-3 years. So if we don't win 5 conference games next year, it'll be a pretty big failure, relative to where we want to be as a program contending for conference championships. One thing that I was encouraged by from the UNC-CH game was how our team didn't completely fold late in the second quarter. UNC-CH had a drive that was extended TWICE by defensive penalties. Our team has been so weak this year, I wouldn't have been surprised if we had allowed UNC-CH to score. But they didnt, and we got a great interception. It's nice seeing some of that mental toughness that was so glaringly absent throughout the year.

12/1/2014 5:33:56 PM
Yeah, it'll be his third year in the program by the time he starts (if it's Jalan McClendon). And he may even get some burn next year backing up Jacoby.
12/1/2014 5:36:23 PM
I doubt either qb will ever be as good as wilson or glennon. People still dont quite undertsand how two special talents were wasted back to back. Both of those guys were on mariotas level or higher[Edited on December 1, 2014 at 5:41 PM. Reason : debatable]
12/1/2014 5:40:29 PM
^^Yep. Hearing Doeren talk about how being really thin at QB this season limited some of the designed QB runs makes me think McLendon will get some playing time next year.Right now one of the biggest things people talk about is our youth and inexperience. So 2-3 years from now will definitely not be a rebuilding year if everything goes well. We'll actually be a really experienced team compared to where we are now, barring major transfers or something like that.^Uhh...ok. I do think pretty much everybody realizes just how good Wilson and Glennon were. Nobody's asking McLendon or Jacoby to be as good as RW. [Edited on December 1, 2014 at 5:41 PM. Reason : f]
12/1/2014 5:40:42 PM
Based on all of Doerens successes and failures, it is clear that he must have a a great QB with a couple years of experience. To assume that he can be successful without one is to ignore his coaching history.
12/1/2014 5:46:41 PM
ALL OF HIS COACHING HISTORY YOU GUYS JUST LOOK AT IT I MEAN IT'S ALL RIGHT THERE(only 4 seasons)McLendon, in 2 years, will have had more time in this system than Jacoby had in week 1 this year.
12/1/2014 5:49:03 PM
Im just saying the championship expectation is not an annual thing but an occasional expectation if the stars align tot being us an unexpected, unique talent. I dont think anyone would ever expect us to win a championship without some god like being. 1 rw can offset jike 5 elite fsu players. Dont forget fsu Is recruiting almost at alabama levels under fisher. They will only get deeper. Winston has been piss poor this year and they still ran the table.
12/1/2014 5:51:41 PM
12/1/2014 6:07:11 PM
^^Gotcha. I don't disagree there. FSU is gonna always out recruit us (and pretty much everybody in the ACC) and have the inside track at the ACC every year. Where we fell short with TOB was not capitalizing on those down years for FSU. I don't mean to make this about TOB, but just to point out where they were during his time here:2007: 4-4 ACC record (BC won Atlantic)2008: 5-3 ACC record (won Atlantic)2009: 4-4 (Clemson won Atlantic)2010:6-2 (won Atlantic, this was the year we lost to MD last week of the year when a win would've put us in the ACCCG)2011: 5-3 (Clemson won Atlantic)2012: 7-1 (won Atlantic)Point being, besides 2012 (a year in which we beat 'em) they were not dominant at all in those years. Yet we failed to ever capitalize on a weaker ACC those years.[Edited on December 1, 2014 at 6:07 PM. Reason : arrows]
12/1/2014 6:07:21 PM
^That's a good representation of how to build. FSU didn't go from 4 conference wins to 8 in just one year. And they started over at QB 3 times. I don't think DD will recruit as well (since all of those QBs and most of the other members of the team are NFL caliber), but none of us should be asking him to be there in year 3.[Edited on December 1, 2014 at 9:44 PM. nebraska hired a coach that probably was going to get fired next year so...maybe? the big 10 is dying demographically. maryland is retarded for joining themjury is still out whether doeren is a good or even average coach but yeah, leaving now would suck. we'd end up with a terrible recruiting class this year and the "hot" mid major coaching market (where we would assuredly be looking) is a barren wasteland. even the "fuck it, hire chad morris" option is gone
12/10/2014 8:40:36 PM
More like the "fuck it, Chad Morris, oh shit he turned us down"

the item about 4 stars is the definition of arbitrary endpoints considering that O'Brien got ten 4 star recruits his first two years 2007 2008
12/19/2014 6:25:37 PM
^Not to argue...but I looked it up out of curiosity and this is what I found:From Scout, we got Mattes, Glennon, Brandon Barnes, Terrell Manning. Those were all the 2008 class. Couldn't find any 4 stars in 2007.And in Rivals it was Jay Smith, Antoine Holmes (juco) in 2007. And Sam Jones (don't think he ever played), Glennon, Mattes, Manning, Barnes, Kyle Linney (don't remember him ever playing either). So that's 8...with, I think, only 6 ever playing. [Edited on December 19, 2014 at 6:38 PM. Reason : +cred to DD for making recruiting more exciting and worth following][Edited on December 19, 2014 at 6:39 PM. Reason : d]

has to be rivals b/c scout only has us with five 4-stars in the last two years, and i think zero top 100.But you are right, 8, not 10. Doesnt matter that two didnt play in this comparison until this years 4 step on the field. But even so, saying Doeren got 7 his first two years vs call it 6 for O'Brien weakens that quoted argument quite a bit.2006 is also an arbitrary cutoff point fro top 100's b/c Amato was racking up the top 100's before that.i agree that Doeren is doing a good job recruiting and his high profile recruits are higher ranked than O'Brien's early high profile recruits, just think that quoted text is a poor arguments b/c they select arbitrary end points to benefit their argument.i'm no o'brien lover, more tampering the doeren exaltation (in comparison to o'brien)
