My mom expressed concern one day while I was texting and driving. I told her about messing with an ipod while driving counterflow in Baghdad. She didn't think I was nearly as cool as I did.

I've put it off for way too long....Any recommendations on where to order a holster for my .45 Peacemaker? No, not a concealed holster in a fanny pack, I mean the John Wayne leather hip rig, preferably with rings for extra rounds all the way around the belt.

does anyone here use a gun safe in their vehicle, or have feedback on using one? i'd like to get one so that it won't be as much of a problem if i'm carrying during the day and then decide to go to a restaurant serving alcohol. i've seen the center-of-mass.com in car gun safes recommended on some forums but they look kind of small. i've got room in my vehicle (suv) for something bigger so that i can also stash a box of ammo, big rolls of cash etc. what works well? how did you mount it? was it easy to get in the habit of loading/unloading from your in vehicle safe frequently?

I have a Honeywell safe that I bolted into the back of my hatchback for quite a while. It is ~ 15 x 12 x 12'' and has a numeric key pad and key lock.I was probably locking my gun in my car 3 times a day for a long period of time. It is easy to get into the habit of doing it.

Speaking of which, I went ahead and submitted a request for funds for SCCC. We'll see how long it takes to get it. I'm sure they'll find something else to throw up as a roadblock.

Also...took the M4A1 out to the range for some night firing; mind you this is my first time doing this. So I've got the ACOG and the flashlight, but every time I took a shot, the gas from the muzzle clouded up the ACOG for a good five seconds or so. This was with and without the IR filter. Any prior service guys have any tips or tricks to alleviate this?

i'm looking at getting a gun for self defense to keep in the house and maybe take shooting once a year or so. i am thinking i want a pistol and a couple friends have recommended a 40 caliber glock.i don't really want to spend too much money (maybe 300 bucks or so if possible?) since i am not planning on using it very often...but i want something that is safe, reliable, will do the job, and hopefully that my wife could use as well (she is fairly petite). what do you guys think?i'm sure this question was asked somewhere in this thread, but i gave up looking for it after reading 3 pages[Edited on September 18, 2009 at 8:18 AM. that would be good. but if it's for home defense only, you can't beat a shotgun.
9/18/2009 8:56:59 AM
If she is fairly petite, you may wish to go with a 9mm. Buddy's wife shot his .40 and found it to just have too much recoil for her, she liked my 9mm.I'd see if she wasn't willing to shoot the pistol before you purchase so she can give you feedback before the purchase (since this is also for her).

1) Don't go cheap on firearms. Far better to spend a bit of money to get a reliable weapon than go cheap and have it malfunction when you need it most.2) Used is your friend.I"m a Europhile in this aspect - Walthers and Sig-Sauers make great pistols. If you're looking for a nice little pistol, Walther PPS. Just be advised that any tiny, concealable pistol you get is not going to be fun to shoot (but that's not what they're for, eh?).

Whats good for an inexpensive shotgun? The most research I have done is th sunday paper Dick's ads. Would a $299 Mossburg be a good purchase mainly for home protection? What would you suggest?
9/18/2009 3:55:10 PM
I picked up a Mossberg 500 a few years back for home protection and liked it. I got one with just the pistol grip for under $300 I think.Plus if you get an all black one with the heat guard on top it's badass looking enough to make an intruder shit himself before you even have to fire it.
9/18/2009 4:06:15 PM
^^^the safe I have is small enough that it fits hidden underneath the bench seat in the back of my truck, but not everyone has that option^^as for the mossberg, I have a 500 and I like it alotpeople on here will give you the run around b/w the 500 and the remington 870- truth of the matter is, for something that you are using for home defense, either one will work fine for ya, and there are plenty of accessories out there that can make it as tacti-cool as you would like. lemme see if I can find a picture of what I did to mine.... well, looks like google pic's took down my pictures, and the originals are on my desktop back home, so I will post them whenever I get home[Edited on September 18, 2009 at 5:23 PM. Reason : stoopid google]
9/18/2009 5:15:59 PM
Mossberg also makes a (relatively) cheap tactical autoloader. 930 SPX. It's a 7+1 with a Picatinny rail, only about 500-600.
9/18/2009 9:19:25 PM
i really appreciate all you guys input...its been very helpful.what i'm thinking is i like the ability to lock a 9mm up in a box and set it in a bedside table (and possibly conceal and carry down the road) and access it quickly i someone were to try to break in. with a shotgun, it would be fine for now...but when kiddies come along, i guess i would have an issue of storing it somewhere.but if a shotgun is definitely the way to go, i guess i can sacrifice the benefits of a compact gun...but it sounds like a 9mm would do the trick too...am i right?as for revolver vs. pistol...this may be stupid, but i really prefer the look of a pistol (and i imagine the feel as well...i've never held a revolver though). the walther pps, xd, and m&p all look great to me...but are more than i was planning on spending. any cheaper recommendations? if not, i am ok spending some extra money for a quality gun that will work when i need it.i live in raleigh...is jim's gun shop the best in the area? would i be better off buying from the gun show in november?

mine looks similar, but it has a folding stock (holds 3 shells in the stock butt) and I put a light on the end of it (which would more than likely blind anyone before I would have to shoot them)also, I think I have the 20" barrel (yours is longer- mine comes out to the end of the shell holder)
9/19/2009 10:57:00 AM
yeh, I really want to put a light on it but haven't found one I like/with a trigger switch
9/19/2009 11:00:09 AM
tacstar i think it was that I got- and it has a pressure switch and a standard toggle switch- http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp;jsessionid=223JJDHYIAYI5LAQBBKCCOFMCAEFKIWE?id=0005772223326a&type=product&cmCat=froogle&cm_ven=data_feed&cm_cat=froogle&cm_pla=1240610&cm_ite=0005772223326a&_requestid=32032i've mounted the switch on the pump, but I like it better on the pistol grip
9/19/2009 11:04:22 AM
nice. how long is the cord? would it reach from the end of the barrel to the pistol grip? [Edited on September 19, 2009 at 11:10 AM. Reason : just reread your post. guess it does ]
9/19/2009 11:09:57 AM
it stretches it out some, but yeah, it gets there also, i wouldn't order from the link i posted- I know cheaper than dirt has it for like 10-20 bucks cheaperyup:http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/LIGHT121-1.html[Edited on September 19, 2009 at 11:17 AM. Reason : s]

^yeh, I was just looking at that one. the light looks cooler too. lol [Edited on September 19, 2009 at 11:39 AM. Reason : though either one or neither one may be the actual light...]
9/19/2009 11:39:19 AM
I'm not a fan of red dots on home shotguns. They just sit too high for me.I like ghost ring sights.I do need to get around to adding a light. Probably just attach a rail to the forearm and use a light clamped on with a scope ring. Ghetto style. If I ever find a tritium vial then I'll drill a hole in the front sight and put it in.As far as cheap shotguns, there's the Mossberg Maverick, the New England Firearms Pardner Pump, and a Norinco clone of an 870. All are around or just under $200 and should work ok.The mossberg 500 is not as durable as the 870, but it's a moot point because anyone asking about a shotgun here will never shoot enough rounds in two lifetimes to break a 500.I like the Mossbergs for the ergos. If cheap and home defense are the criteria, then I'd hit the local shops looking for police trade ins (Rem 870, Moss 500, sometimes Ithaca 37). They will be as cheap as a new low end shotgun and will already have short barrels, maybe even mag extensions.
9/19/2009 4:46:48 PM
IMHO, I wouldn't sweat sights for a home defense gun. You've got a shotgun in a confined area. If you can't hit a BG over a bead at 15' - 25' then you probably shouldn't own a shotgun.
9/19/2009 8:33:47 PM
^yeh. you don't need sights at all for an HD shotgun. I have my red dot for gun fun
9/19/2009 9:59:30 PM
you don't need a light either. just blind the person with the muzzle flash.

anyone have any sling recommendations for a mossburg 500? i have an ATI adjustable stock if that matters...
9/29/2009 10:12:10 PM
what do you use it for? home defense?edit: i guess so if you have the ati adjustable stocksi don't know what to suggest for a tactical sling. i take the sling off my shotgun when i'm not hunting. don't want it getting in the way if i have to put it in home defense mode [Edited on September 29, 2009 at 10:24 PM.
