2/9/2012 7:08:34 PM
welp, got let go today with no explanation. woot
2/10/2012 5:59:03 PM
Really? How did they break that news?
2/10/2012 6:00:45 PM
Just got a call today from BJs about a management position based off my resume on Monster... which I haven't updated in over 2 years since I've been employed continuously and am happy with my current job. I'll still probably call them back and see what they have to say. Never hurts, right?
2/10/2012 6:00:53 PM
pretty simple. I got a phone call from the agency I've been under contract with to "meet them in the morning for a performance review." as well, several people came up to me yesterday asking if they could get a copy of the code I've been working on to "put it into source control." I go in to the "performance review" and see a status board on the wall with my name on it beside the row-header of "jobs ending". and the recruiter says that they didn't give any reason for letting me go. just told me not to come back
2/10/2012 6:09:10 PM
How long were you there?
2/10/2012 6:33:27 PM
3 months. not long at all.
2/10/2012 6:38:52 PM
Did you move for that job?
2/10/2012 7:24:12 PM
nope. drove 60 miles one-way for it. still fucked, either way
2/10/2012 7:45:12 PM
I got laid off twice in 8 months, the last time being last Friday. I already got another job offer today so I lucked out. My job hunting system gets me a lot of interviews.
2/10/2012 11:12:12 PM
Which is....
2/11/2012 7:49:02 AM
Smoking poles.
2/11/2012 9:30:12 AM
pretty sure I'm about to be laid off, but I've already put some feelers out and have an interview lined up next week... fuck 'em
2/11/2012 10:15:03 AM
Come back to Raleigh, burro.
2/11/2012 10:54:47 AM
Damn, sorry to hear about everyone getting laid off
2/11/2012 4:58:51 PM
this thread is depressing

I actually am in need of some of people for my business.Must be willing to relocate to Baltimore, MD. But you can't be any geek off the street. Gotta be handy with steel, earn your keep.
2/12/2012 8:09:40 AM
lol, are you paying in cornbread and butter beans?
2/12/2012 10:31:58 AM
Where are some of you guys applying? Red Hat is always hiring. We had been looking for a sysadmin, and only like 2 semi-qualified candidates applied.
2/12/2012 11:00:58 AM
I stick almost exclusively to Craigslist. You won't get as high paying of a job, but there a lot less red tape involved in getting the position, usually. I open up all of the pages with relevant jobs to my career...writing, editing, marketing, design, etc. and apply for them all. Then, after I have done that, I open up the main listing of all jobs and check back every few hours to see all the positions that were added, ensuring I never miss one. I applied for over 30 jobs in three days, and had four interviews during my first week of being unemployed. Going back to work February 20th.
2/12/2012 11:06:20 AM
I'm still underemployedbut this week I'm on contract down in Georgia working 65 hours in a week
2/12/2012 11:15:20 AM
I had an interview last month. It went well and my references were called. I saw Friday that the job was reposted. I know through HR that the department head didn't send her recommendation to them. I'm not sure how to handle that.
2/13/2012 11:43:26 AM
simple: you move on
2/13/2012 2:16:53 PM
Head understands that, ego wants to call up and ask what the fuck are they thinking.

i post this from time to time but my company is hiring for my job!!i hired into caterpillar in a rotational program then went out to the field to work with our dealerships to develop them & grow business (& learn a lot too)you have to be relocatable but it's an awesome opportunity. i hired in 6 years ago through this program & it's definitely the best decision i've ever madeyou have to have an account to apply on jointeamcaterpillar.com but the posting # is 94446 it closes in august & they hire in cyclesanyone with equipment experience or if you grew up on a farm (they love that) should consider! i had a degree in business & communication and went on the sales track but there is an engineering track for those of you more inclined. it's more for those engineers with the knowledge & aptitude but don't want to "be an engineer" and are more people focused.ncsu has some recognition in the program (i'm not the only alum that has been through the program)here is the description
2/21/2012 4:24:37 PM
^that seems like a very long time for that opening. i feel like a lot of people applying for it now would have already found jobs by august, at least the most qualified applicants
2/21/2012 6:00:26 PM
GE has a similar program where they start taking applications in the spring and then the job starts in late summer.
2/21/2012 9:02:52 PM
most jobs that I applied for in large corps took 5+ months to get back to me.
2/21/2012 10:00:58 PM
one job i applied to acted mad when i declined an interview 8 months laterdo i have that long to consider your offer bitch?
2/21/2012 10:10:08 PM
When I was hired in they did rolling offers so some people interviewed in August or September and were given job offers to start in Jan. I interviewed in Nov & started in Jan. I think they have it open for so long so they don't have to deal with creating a new opening every couple of months through HRIt is a program the company has been doing for about 50 years and are almost always hiring for it, just a matter of when the program starts, usually 3 groups a year starting in Jan, May & Sept so they are prob filling for the May start now.
2/22/2012 12:21:04 AM
My company is hiringIf you1) Are unemployed or are currently seeking another position2) Have a degree in Electrical/Computer/Mechanical Engineering3) Are comfortable with ~55K - 68K in compensationThen shoot me a PM. We are looking to fill one or two roles. Its with a very stable global organization that has not had layoffs at all during the last 4 years. Let me know.
2/24/2012 12:35:36 PM
yay phone interview later today! What are good questions to have ready for the employer when they ask if you have any questions? Is it frowned upon to ask about compensation up front?
3/5/2012 9:59:23 AM
still have a job, for the time being. But feel like i'm going to lose it at any moment.
3/5/2012 10:03:18 AM
Of course not. Any good employer knows you're there for the money. However, avoid asking about other perks like time off, holidays, etc., at least until further along in the process.
3/5/2012 10:03:51 AM
Where do you see the company going in five years? What are some challenges with the position? What's your favorite thing about working for _____________? etc etc etc. For me it really kind of depends on what has already been discussed in the interview. Just Google "What to ask in an interview" and craploads of pages with suggestions comes up.
3/5/2012 10:05:23 AM
It's just a 15-minute phone interview. I'm guessing I won't have too much time to ask a lot of questions so I'd get the best-of-the-best questions to ask from you guys. It's been ages since I've done a phone interview.
3/5/2012 10:14:29 AM
Yeah the phone interview I had for this job there really wasn't time at the end for those sorts of questions. It pretty much wrapped up with my now boss saying, "Well thanks so much for chatting with me. I'll email you tomorrow to set up an in-person interview."
3/5/2012 10:16:35 AM
Also it's a 1 year research position so there's not really any of the long-term questions to ask.
3/5/2012 10:19:59 AM
Lost my job contracting with the state for no good reason; now i'm underemployed working a slightly more than min wage job.
3/6/2012 12:51:40 PM
what type of job you looking for? (for the thread readers' information)
3/6/2012 1:35:14 PM
I've a bs in computer engineering and 2 years experience doing IT (mainly helpdesk, but some database design and programming, and a good bit of replacing computers and data migration)
3/6/2012 2:41:14 PM
Any coding experience?
