Ill be happy when that happens for a week, right now its always just false hope, one day of small gains followed by 4 of big losses. Actually Ill be happy when I can say I made money today and actually mean it, rather than meaning I recouped a small amount of my losses haha.
10/13/2008 10:17:49 AM
i'm thinking about picking up F i just hate to on an up day.
10/13/2008 10:18:09 AM
Yeah friday was a decent buying day, I have a bit of cash waiting in the wings but definitely gonna wait a few days and see if things head south even more.
10/13/2008 10:28:30 AM
Also maybe I was wrong appears to be headed back up now, up 450 lets hope it can old some gains for at least a day.
10/13/2008 10:32:54 AM
Hehe totally should have loaded up on MS...
10/13/2008 11:44:25 AM
whoever that was that bought GM last week, I sure hope you are selling it today. unless the government steps in, which I sure hope they don't, they are going bankrupt and there is nothing they can do to stop it
10/13/2008 11:46:32 AM
yeah i spent all weekend looking at good buys, but now that the market is up, i don't wanna be buying now.of course the question is, have we already hit bottom and is this the beginning of the upswing, or yet another sucker rally?F and GM are high risk high reward stocks. It's hard to imagine either or both of them failing, and if and when they recover, being in now will net large returns.Other really good buys all with really really low P/Es:MSFTGEJNJPFEDISTVZAnother stock i like is MVL. They're making money hand over fist with all of the marvel movies over the last several years, which has also drummed up more comic book sales. The nice thing is that most of the money is being made with intellectual property (movies, video games, toys, and other merchandise), and requires little risk on the part of Marvel itself.

guys, plz read:http://tinyurl.com/3eck6ei'm not taking a position on it, but it kind of resonates with all the baby boomers retiring and pulling their money out in order to live on, and all those Aztec/Mayan/nostradamus - type prophecies that claim the world will end in 2012 (not to mention the large hadron collider )
10/13/2008 12:59:51 PM
^^share price has absolutely nothing to do with the state of a business on a short term basis. long term, price follows value...and GM's price is down about 80% the last year. the only way they can survive is to continually take on debt, which will ultimately destroy the company.^^^^^that is a pretty good list, and really what people should be buying right now - blue chips. think long term here guys, specifically GE and JNJ are at great values right now even with today's bounce[Edited on October 13, 2008 at 1:05 PM. ^^ Excellent read on Investment Rate.I wish that metric was discussed more often.
10/13/2008 1:40:21 PM
Need your help/opinions. Does anyone have a comparison chart for Pros/Cons of the various online active trading sites like scottrade, etrade e.t.c ?Just looking to play around with a few hundreds, I have the longterm investment secured through other subsidized means.
10/13/2008 1:58:51 PM
scott trade will let you open with as little as 500.
10/13/2008 2:02:48 PM
so, will it close on the positive?
10/13/2008 2:05:11 PM
I dont think there is too much doubt left with less than 2 hours. It hasnt been volatile up and down like it was last week throughout the day. Spent most of the day solidly up 450+
10/13/2008 2:15:19 PM
You can use zecco.com also, it is not as reputable as scottrade or etrade but it does allow free trading (limited).

For once I am happy to have been wrong haha, the question is how will things be towards the end of the week. We had one of these sucker rallys about 2 weeks back and well we see how that worked out. People who bought late last week made some money today, more than likely they will be taking those shares back off though at the slightest hint we are headed back down. I still dont think we have bottomed yet unfortunately but maybe today will put a bit of confidence back into people.
10/13/2008 3:34:05 PM
Damn. I bought ATVI on Friday and now it's up ~30%.
10/13/2008 3:48:22 PM
A lot of stocks did that today hence why I think you will see anyone who actually bought stuff friday sell off here pretty quick. For those of us who bought prior to last week we still have a long long way to go haha
10/13/2008 3:53:58 PM
yeah, it will be down a few hundred tuesday, everyone selling.
10/13/2008 3:58:41 PM
Yeah I mean had I bought anything at all on friday and it was up today especially more than 20% I would be selling it right now as we speak. Ive learned my lesson on holding anything that is profitable in this market.
10/13/2008 3:59:48 PM
I am going to guess 250-350 down on Tuesday.[Edited on October 13, 2008 at 4:05 PM. Reason : w]
10/13/2008 4:04:17 PM
+13% overall today, another week of that and maybe I can smile again
10/13/2008 4:05:54 PM
I just looked at my other investments, havent for awhile...omg.....lol...that was before today.....once i deduct that from my income I might be negative come tax time I didnt reallocate anything in my 401k, I am thinking I am buying it cheaper (only good thing)...maybe the international portion will look slightly better after today but with this market, by Friday we could be right back where we started today.[Edited on October 13, 2008 at 4:11 PM. 10/13/2008 4:07:26 PM

Always use trailing stops. Nothing is worse than being profitable and holding on to a stock only to see it turn into a paper loss. Then you either have to sell it or hold on to it and tie your cash up for god knows how long.
10/13/2008 6:39:22 PM
Looks like today is back to normal, push in the morning then selling off starts and we end up in the red, lets hope this thing turns around
10/14/2008 10:01:30 AM
sold 34 shares of SSO @ $36.58 = ~23% return.
10/14/2008 10:28:21 AM
what's a good mutual fund to buy into today? only have about $2700 in a roth ira i need to take out of cash.
10/14/2008 10:46:37 AM
question, so capital loss can be tax deduction up to $3000. So if I've purchased a stock (held less than a year) and I sell it for a loss of say $500 and report this capital loss on my tax forms, then do I get that $500 back from the government? Seems like it's a no-risk proposition if you only buy $3000 worth of stock? I'm sure this can't be right?
10/14/2008 1:00:16 PM
you don't pay income tax on the $500. it's not a tax CREDIT.
10/14/2008 1:03:07 PM
ah okay, gotcha, that makes a lot more sense.. I'm still learning this tax shit with capital gains/losses. One thing I'm finding is that the government wants to make tax laws hard as fuck to understand.
10/14/2008 1:14:38 PM
WHICH IS WHY WE NEED THE FAIR TAX.

I shorted FSLR yesterday morning for a couple grand but haven't been able to get enough time at my desk lately to do much more.I think tomorrow if the market gaps up tomorrow morning I will buy TWM. I think the general trend will be down for the next week or two and most likely longer than that so if it goes in the red intraday I think I'll still be safe.Have any of you guys looked at the details of the deal that GS cut with Buffet? IIRC he's going to collect 500M$ a year from that. With a recession/depression oncoming, and that kind of $exas being payed out, I can't see GS staying over $100 at the end of this quarter.[Edited on October 15, 2008 at 3:38 PM. Reason : gs]
