Lecque didn't get drafted last year and signed a 3yr/$4m deal. Hall could absolutely land a similar deal from a team given the belief that he'd be a draft pick next year if he develops as expected. Plus you have to factor in Hall is already older than the kids turning down the GLeague deal and who knows how basketball goes next year with COVID and such.

I'm not sure what that has to do with UNC recruits turning down $500k for a year with the g league select team training for the NBA draft.

A 5* player that is projected to be a 1st round pick the next year turning down a 1yr $500k deal
vs
A 4* player that is projected to be a draft pick the next year turning down a 3yr/$4.2m.

I think it's easy to turn down a 1yr deal in the G-League when you're expected to go to a top 10 program and start from day 1. Caleb Love is going to start from day 1 at UNC, Josh Hall wasn't going to start for us next year. The hope was Hall would be a Patrick Williams-like season for us.

It's easy to turn down half a million dollars for a year of training/playing basketball and then the next year be drafted and sign for guaranteed millions of dollars? From a purely basketball standpoint I think that this new g league option will benefit kids that choose it more than a year of college. They won't be limited by NCAA rules on practice time and will be able to have more hours being coached as a result.

Keatts likes/values experience, no way Hall was starting if DJ comes back.

Beverly, Daniels, and DJ are locks to start.

Then you need a guard and either Bates or another forward. You think Keatts is starting Hall over Hellems? Don't see it happening. Not saying Hall couldn't explode and earn starter minutes by the end of the season or after an injury, but he wasn't expected to start.

I imagine you'll see a starting 5 of Allen/Seabron, Beverly, Daniels, Hellems, DJ or Beverly, Daniels, Hellems, DJ, Bates depending on match-ups. Hall was setup perfectly to do what Patrick Williams just did at FSU. Be a 5* player, never start a game, have a great 6th man freshman season, and turn that into a 1st round draft pick.

I don't think Beverly is a lock to start. Also Bates is 100% the starter at center.

I expect both Seabron and Allen to play significant roles after being in the program for a year. (I expect Taylor to play some minutes at the 3/4 depending on matchup/foul trouble.) I also expect Hayes to come in and play right away. Beverly has played fewer minutes every year and I expect that to continue since this is the deepest roster of guards Keatts has had.

IMO we'll see about Beverly.

As for Bates, I can't wait to see more of him. Keatts said in one of those basketball videos that he thinks Bates is either the most or one of the most talented players on the team and that not having him last year hurt us a lot

Beverly is our starting PG next season until someone takes it away from him

If that happens, he's a bit redundant with Thomas Allen for sure, but I have a feeling he's playing heavy PG minutes every game regardless

He could still start with DD acting as the main ball handler if DD can step up his passing.

Seems like Hayes pt will be partially influenced by whether or not DD can be a distributor

Also I don't know where this "Keatts likes upperclassmen" comes from. He actually hasn't had many freshmen on his teams, mainly due to weird circumstances beyond his control (Bey decommitting after signing day, Steere leaving out after one game, Lecque going pro.) He had 2 freshman his first year (Beverly, Batts), 1 his second year (Hellems) and 1 last year (Bates). That means half of his freshmen have been starters.

I think if Hayes is anywhere near as good as his recruiting ranking, he will be the starter. Talent trumps experience. We know what Beverly is and that's a guard who doesn't turn the ball over, decent (but not great) three point shooter, almost no threat to score from inside the arc (worst 2pt% on team) and is too short and slow to be effective on defense.

I get it, the guy has been a warrior and is a fan favorite. But if he's starting, we aren't competing for an NCAA bid.

I think that 3 starting spots are locked up between Daniels, Bates and Funderburk/Hellems. The other two I see coming from Hayes/Seabron/Allen. They all bring much more to the table then Beverly.

Because Keatts himself has said as much multiple times? He values experience and that's why every year he goes after grad transfers, traditional transfers, post-grads, and JUCOs.
Quote from Keatts on why he targets transfers:
“Any time you’re bringing in so many new guys, it’s important that you have some older guys,” Keatts said. “Everybody will tell you a great formula in college basketball is to stay old. ... They know what helpside (defense) is. They know how to talk. They’re great in the locker room.”

Can't find the quote but I believe he compared getting a 4* traditional transfer to being more valuable than bringing in a 5* FR in terms of immediate impact.

Quote :
"I don't think Beverly is a lock to start. Also Bates is 100% the starter at center. "

Disagree on the first part, and I agree on the 2nd part depending on what line-up we're running out there. Could certainly see us playing a lineup with DJF playing the 5 and Hellems at the 4 but I'm hoping we see more DJF/Bates on the court together. Beverly has 73 starts over the last 3 seasons, not sure why you'd think he wouldn't start the first game of the season.

Seabron has spent the entire redshirt year running PG, so I imagine you'll see some grouping of Seabron, Allen, and Beverly running PG. Not sure how much Hayes or Moore will play unless they exceed expectations. Hayes ranking is about his athleticism and upside and Moore seems to be an elite defender that needs to work on scoring.

Seabron is a bit of an unknown qty (although he was ranked similar to Batts and Blake Harris), but neither Allen or Beverly have shown primary ball handler skills. I agree one of the 3 will likely start, especially if Hayes has limited practice time bc of covid, but DD will likely be the primary handler unless Hayes, or Seabron I guess, really pop.

Hopefully Hellems improves his perimeter and drive game enough to the 4th starter with DD, DJ and Manny.

iirc, on on of those Wolfpack Hustle shows last season, KK said something like "The best player on the team isn't playing this year", and he was referring to Seabron... or maybe he said the best "scorer", but he said something like that.

I agree, especially in our scheme (he may have been okay in a walk-the-ball up role for Ohio State), but the only natural PG on our team next season will be a freshman

And I dont think we expect Seabron to be a PG but who knows. I guess he could just be Evan Turner and we wont have to worry about it

[Edited on May 5, 2020 at 4:12 PM. Reason : my understanding is Seabron is a "PG" like Funderburk is Kevin Durant and Howell was a SF]

^Cannot believe it, but I'm agreeing with this. Beverly should be playing 10-15 minutes as a spot shooter.

Allen, Hayes, Seabron can handle the point.

And Hall starts at SF.

So let's say Beverly doesn't start(which he will), that's a guard off the court, why would Hall fill that position?

Assuming no Beverly starting, and Hall was actually on our roster, your starting 5 would be:
Seabron, Allen, Daniels, DJF, Bates
or
Seabron, Daniels, Hellems, DJF, Bates

I think people just get too caught up on "starting", with how Keatts plays, starting doesn't mean much because he rotates guys a ton. DJF started 15 games last year and was one of our most important and productive players, it's really not a huge deal.

But to suggest Beverly plays 3 seasons and averages 28.9 minutes per game for his career and is going to come in as a SR and play "10-15 minutes" is laughable. I'm not a huge Beverly fan, but I also factor in last year he was playing hurt most of the year. I hope Seabron or Allen can hold down most of our minutes at PG next year and Beverly can focus on his shooting/scoring.

^^^I was making the comment that Hall would start if he came.

And you can call it laughable but most of us know it is true. We are not a good team if Beverly is playing 30 minutes. How many times does this have to be rehashed? He gets absolutely exposed on defense. We will be ten deep, there is no need for it. Don't care he is a senior.

Exactly.

The only reason BB has been getting the time that he has is lack of depth on the bench and injury.

With a 10 deep, he should be relegated to 10-15 min a game.

Replacing Markell will be the hardest position to fill.

"Former Wake Forest [2020]Signee Jaylon Gibson has committed to NC State and Kevin Keatts. Gibson backed out of his commitment after Wake Forest decided to move on from Danny Manning. Gibson starred at Grace Christian School in Cary this season, leading them to their best season in school history.

Gibson is a 6-foot-11 forward with a unique game. He blocks shots, can create offense, and has a chance to become a really special player with further development. He will take the void left by Josh Hall when he decided to enter the 2o20 NBA draft with representation."
