Jailbreak for the new iPad is finally out. http://greenpois0n.com/

sweeeeeeet. First time jailbreaking an iPad. Any particular apps other than what I'm used to on the iPhone I should check out?
5/25/2012 9:29:19 AM
I never found nearly as many "must-have" tweaks for the iPad as I did the phone. The biggest thing I care about is WiCarrier (I'm all the time jumping on different wi-fi networks and not knowing for sure which one I'm on) and Iconoclasm (I hate having the mile and a half in between each icon on the iPad. Can't wait to get my 9x6 layout back)

I'm so glad I can install XBMC on my iPad again now. That alone made me wish I hadn't upgraded to 5.0[Edited on May 25, 2012 at 6:24 PM. Reason : meh]

Finally picked up an AV cable for my iPad. Using AirVideo I can now stream all my movies/tv shows to my iPad and play it on a tv. Was actually quite impressed with the quality. Great little media player on the go for hotels/friends houses.
5/26/2012 10:09:41 AM
so if I jailbreak my Ipad and Apple TV, can I load XBMC and stream Hulu in full size on my TV?
5/29/2012 12:30:36 PM
What does the iPad have to do with it? Can't you just put XBMC on the Apple TV and play Hulu through that?

Hey folks. I've got an iPad question.I have an impending wedding. Fiance's sister is too pregnant to attend and it's really upsetting her. I want to use skype/facetime/videochat to let her sister virtually attend and participate in the entire wedding. It looks like the wedding location (beach) has Verizon 4G LTE coverage and AT&T 4G* coverage. Is there any appreciable difference in video quality/connection/resolution etc between the iPad2 and iPad3?Also, her sister lives in BFE Oregon and uses a fairly low-end (but new) Windows Laptop. They do have high speed internet of some sort. Is there anything I should prep for or preempt on that end to get the best quality/reliability possible?TL;DR:Need an iPad or other tablet device with 3G/4G for video conference. Is the 4G worth the extra cost? Is the iPad the best option?
5/29/2012 2:23:08 PM
You can't do FaceTime over cellular without jailbreaking, btw. But other options work. I can't speak for what 4g looks like but FaceTime over 3G works fine most of the times I've tried it. A few times it's been…spotty, but almost always it's been as least good enough. As far as the ipad2 vs 3, the camera is better on the three but AFAIK, none of the video chat services take advantage of the extra resolution so I wouldn't expect to see a much better picture. Personally, I'd consider going the route of a 4G hotspot and a normal laptop w/webcam. Unless you're just using the wedding as an excuse to buy a new toy. Which is also perfectly acceptable.

cool...thanks!
5/29/2012 3:39:58 PM
Tyler...AFAIK you wouldn't be able to FaceTime b/c FaceTime only works between Apple products. You could Skype though and you can do that over LTE. As long as you have good signal and she has good internet connection it should be fine. I Skype my mom with my iPad to her bottom of the line Samsung notebook and it's pretty much flawless.
5/29/2012 3:43:32 PM
^Exactly what I was looking for, thanks man. Looking at the front facing video camera, quality seems to be pretty decent too. Not high resolution obviously, but compared to most of the Android tablets, the iPad seems much more "crisp".Nacho: Unfortunately the laptop+webcam thing is a non-starter. People will be holding this thing for a couple of hours, and I don't trust a laptop being carried around on the beach. The weight and sand factor makes this a tablet-only affair for me. I thought about using one of my 7" droid tablets, but the screen is really too small for others to be able to see her sister from any distance.Looks like I've got an iPad in my near future (and you're right, it's also a good excuse to get one )

To get around the whole Facetime being WiFi-only ... just make a WiFi AP with a 4G android phone then connect to it. Should be perfect for you, assuming you get 4G where you'll be.I do highly recommend Facetime for anything you care about actually being able to see, sadly it still has far superior quality and performance than any other video chat.

Or just jailbreak the iPad 3 and get an app like 3G unrestrictor or My3G. Viola Facetime over LTE without another device.

Finally getting around to jailbreaking my iPad. Any suggestions? http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/05/29/best-new-ipad-jailbreak-apps-tweaks-in-cydia/

I am really liking Chrome as a browser. Had to get Browser Changer to make it the default browser, and change the horrible icon to something better, but I really like being able to sync up tabs from device to device. It even remembered my stored password the first time I visited TWW on my iPad.
6/30/2012 9:21:56 PM
Eh it's neato but way slower when running JavaScript due to the lack of nitro than safari.
7/1/2012 9:59:49 AM
eh...let me know when it doesn't freeze on simple GOOGLE searches (iphone 4). I only use Chrome on my PC but this version needs some work.

Anyone have a good list you used to find the best iPad apps? I'm new to the iPad and have gotten a lot downloaded, but know there's a ton that I just don't know about.
7/24/2012 10:51:38 AM
honestly the app store has plenty of lists and featured groups of apps for just "general" good apps.
7/24/2012 11:04:53 AM
I probably use Air Video the most now. Hook it up to an HDTV. Portable media streamer.
7/24/2012 11:58:28 AM
^^^ get the AppAdvice app, used to work for them on the side, good guys, good info, lots of lists like you are looking for... and like all tech sites there are people that hate them, but IMO its good info

I'm gonna be getting a new iPad next week. Is the 4G capability worth $129?
7/24/2012 3:45:20 PM
durh, completely

nah

Put the 4g hotspot on your phone you always have your phone and its usually charged, a seperate hot spot device is harder to keep up wiht.
7/24/2012 6:01:08 PM
I went ahead and got the 4G version. Don't know why. I have a 4G LTE hotspot I use with it.
7/24/2012 6:04:41 PM
^I did too and here's why:Tethering to a mobile hotspot or your cell phone will work, but you're adding a second device to the mix and one that invariably has a MUCH shorter battery life.I've yet to use a phone that lasts more than 3-4hrs on a full charge when eating up 4G data. The iPad goes close to double that. It's worth the money for me to not have to worry about my primary communication device going dead in order to tether to another device.
7/25/2012 2:40:42 PM
how often do you use 4G rather than an available wifi hotspot though?
7/25/2012 3:21:31 PM
I use 4G 95% of the time. I'm on site with a client and there's no WIFI we can use.
7/25/2012 3:23:02 PM
Yeah, I use 4G aaalllllll the time, it's worth it not to have to worry about tethering

WTH Apple? Every time I buy an app from the App Store or make in-app purchase, I end up being charged an additional USD 1.00 on top of the app price. As soon as I make a purchase, I get an SMS saying my CC has been charged USD 1.00 by Apple/iTunes. Several hours to a day later, I get an SMS saying my CC has been charged USD X, where X is the price of the app.I even checked my CC statements and I have been charged an additional USD 1.00 every single time.I only started buying apps a couple of months ago. At first, I let it go, because I thought a dollar is not a big deal. But by now, I have paid an extra USD 15 or so, and I am sick of it, and it isn't right.I haven't searched online yet, but I thought maybe someone knows the answer. Is that standard Apple practice for those residing in certain countries?
7/27/2012 2:52:55 PM
The IPad3 4G does NOT work in mainland China. There is apparently no 3G legacy mode or anything. I think it is a frequency thing.
7/27/2012 3:04:50 PM
^^ It's a temporary hold for non-US credit cards (Specifically Asian markets it looks like). Those $1 charges shouldn't actually be debited. There is a possibility that the charge is originating from your CC issuer if it's a non-US credit card (aka it being a foreign transaction fee).
7/27/2012 4:06:01 PM
With VZW's new share everything family plans, iPhones hotspot feature is free. Probably not worth getting a cellular iPad. Especially if you plan on upgrading to a new iPhone when they drop in September with 4G.

Amazon Instant Video app was released today. I'm pretty excited about trying this out when I get home. Decent free selection if you're already a Prime member.

my New iPad is doing something really annoying. When I try to move the volume up or down using the buttons on the side, it does nothing. And on the screen it says "Special Effects Volume". No sound comes out except for the alert tones. So theres no sound at all for movies, videos, games, etc. BUT, if I plug in headphones, sound comes out through them fine.Any ideas? I've googled it and seen shit all over the place but most of them dont work for most people having the problem, it just seems to randomly start working again...

8/1/2012 7:37:23 PM
^^ You might have something in the headphone jack and it's not properly registering when you remove the headphones. Try compressed air and quickly inserting and removing the headphone plug a few times.
8/1/2012 7:50:52 PM
tried that, didnt work
8/3/2012 10:50:28 AM
restored it twice, still not working, taking it in to the Apple Store tomorrow. So, is there a way to block my pics so they cant see my cock pics and pics of various chicks?
8/5/2012 7:32:36 PM
Any diagnostics they do will be in front of you, so you don't have to worry about them being able to look at your pictures. And if they keep it/give you a new one (which they always do instead of repairing it onsite) the first thing they make you do is erase all your personal data anyway.
8/5/2012 8:20:05 PM
When I had problems with one of my iPhones they took it to the back for about 20 minutes. And of course I got a dirty text from a chick during that 20 minutes.
