Companies will tell you all sorts of shit is legal but I wouldn't believe them for one second without confirming it with the Department of Labor.

I think it might have been covered in this thread but what are ya'lls thoughts on accepting an offer from a company only to turn it down and take a different job before you even show up to the job that you already accepted?
12/16/2011 11:14:37 AM
there have been a couple threads on this issue over the years.in summary, i think most of them said "look out for #1"
12/16/2011 11:28:22 AM
it might be a burned bridge, but most likely its a bridge to nowhere or a bridge you will never have to use again anyway
12/16/2011 1:52:12 PM
If you were willing to burn that bridge before crossing it, it would have never led you to where you wanted to go in the first place.

My company is going on a hiring blitz right now. QuEST (it's some sort of acronym) is an engineering outsourcing company who works with lots of great companies around the world. Most of our company is based in India, but for any industry with export controlled material, we have centers in the US. Our US centers are based locally with their primary customerEast Hartford, CT - Pratt & Whitney (where I work now)Windsor Locks, CT - Hamilton SunstrandGreenville, SC - GE Energy (worked there for a year)Cincinnati, OH - GE Aviationand them some other people in Houston, Phoenix, and Rockford, IL. We are looking for candidates that have Vocational Technology Certificates, to Associates Degrees in technology related fields, to entry level BS degrees in an engineering or related technical field, to Engineers with 4+ years of experience. The "Vocational Tech or Associates Degrees in technology related fields" are to work in some sort of "engineering services" or something. Not true engineering, but supporting the engineers and the accounts. Don't really know much about it; I don't deal with them very often.Anyway, look over the list here:https://qrms.quest-global.com/QuestPortal/CP/Quest_CP/SeachResult.aspx?CatID=44&Type=4Pratt just cut one of their engineering services departments and gave the whole damn thing to us, so we're looking to hire a lot of these guys and hire them quickly:https://qrms.quest-global.com/QuestPortal/CP/Quest_CP/JobDescription.aspx?cat=1332&Flag=0Send any resumes directly to me (cover letters don't seem to be required) at toddlion[at]gmail

Been out of work since the start of this month. So far I've been rejected by all the major retailers and have yet to hear back from not one but two jobs at the Animal Shelter, both of which I gather basically amount to "assistant dog killer." I wouldn't be quite so freaked out by my present situation if I had a firm leave date/destination from the Peace Corps, but for now they're fucking around with medical shit and who knows when that bureaucratic clusterscrew will get settled.

Hello unemployed people! The company my girlfriend works for, Maxpoint Interactive, is hiring for a ton of positions. It's a technology startup with offices in Austin, Texas, and Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The jobs posted are primarily in software engineering, statistics, and IT, but they are also in need of business analysts and account managers ASAP. The software engineering jobs are mostly in Austin, and the analyst/account manager jobs are in RTP. If you have any skills at all, there is probably a place for you.All the postings can be found here: http://maxpointinteractive.com/company/careers/Maxpoint provides good benefits, including a full healthcare package and referral bonus. If you apply, send me a PM so I can let her know whose resume to look for.[Edited on February 1, 2012 at 1:40 AM. Reason : ]

Went to career fair. One company I talked to is having an open career fair this Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM. For those who couldn't make it today. There are quite a few different positions available. Mechanical, hardware, software engineering. Some sales or marketing positions(not my field). Looks like they are global with positions in California and Raleigh. They are right off 440 on Capital Blvd.Enjoy and good luck.http://www.extron.com/company/employment.aspx

Anybody ever had an employer (whom you've previously applied to) call you but not leave a message? I got a call from a random number this afternoon, and google told me it was a company that I recently applied to. If they were calling to chat with me, I find it odd that they wouldn't have left me a voicemail. Should I just wait to see if they call again or be more proactive in returning their missed call?
2/6/2012 6:49:05 PM
I'd say call them back, the worst they are gonna tell you is that they misdialed
2/6/2012 7:10:22 PM

The window has probably closed. I would have called them back same day and said something along the lines of "I missed a call from this number earlier and wanted to make sure that I didn't miss them blah blah.."You could maybe try tomorrow morning though.
2/6/2012 7:59:29 PM
at 50 pages, I wonder if you could take the ratio of complaints about being unemployed to the number of job openings posted here, plot them, and discover a new proxy for the state of the economy.
2/6/2012 8:08:14 PM
Thanks all for the replies! I have no fear of returning the call or anything like that, it's just the number is the phone book listing for this large company, rather than a direct line to anyone so I don't know who to return the call to. We'll see what happens when I call it back!
2/7/2012 9:43:38 AM
If I get unemployment forms in the mail does that mean I'm approved? I applied on the 6th, got a form today(dated the 6th) that told me how much I'd get each week, and another letter that had a direct deposit form. I figured my former company would try to dispute it, doesn't seem like they would have had enough time yet. just don't want to get my hopes up! [Edited on February 9, 2012 at 1:56 AM. Reason : -]
2/9/2012 1:55:13 AM
I don't mind interviewing, but if you've all ready given the job to an internal candidate why bother calling me in for an interview?
2/9/2012 10:28:11 AM
^^You'll start getting paid immediately, if your company decides to dispute you'll have to have a meeting with Unemployment. If you lose the dispute you just have to pay the money back.
