^^^ if you want it just to buy one handgun its a hell of a lot cheaper and faster to goto the sheriffs office and get a gun permit. Takes 2 days and costs $5/ permit and you can buy 5 at a time. You fill it out one day and pick up the permit the next day.For concealed carry you have the class costs + $90 or 95 CCW permit cost and 3 months of waiting.
3/4/2010 9:04:50 AM
Thanks NRR.I'll be having my next class on April 10th. The cost is $60. If anyone is interested, just shoot me a PM and I will send you more details.

3/6/2010 10:42:42 AM
can you get permits in another county? what do they go by to see where you live?
3/6/2010 3:01:31 PM
i can't remember..and it's been a few years since i've gotten one so not sure if it's the samei doubt you can just go to any county though
3/6/2010 3:30:24 PM
They go by whatever is on your Driver's Liscense
3/6/2010 4:15:24 PM
There is a way to apply for a purchase permit in a county other than where you reside, but I can't remember exactly what it is. Seems like you have to petition the sheriff, and the only way you are eligible is if you list the reason for the purchase as "collecting" or something like that.Edit:Actually, I think that is only for out-of-state residents[Edited on March 6, 2010 at 4:27 PM. Reason : ^]
3/6/2010 4:27:21 PM
Yeah pete, only for outsiders. As it is the only place you can apply for a permit is the county you have registered as your permanent address with the state (aka whats on your DL)

On purchasing permits...When I was a student at state my home address was in Durham. We all know Durham sucks and it would be much easier to go to the Wake office just because it's close.I called them and told them I live in Raleigh because I'm a student but I haven't changed my DL. The lady said it'd be fine if I brought in some mail with my current address. I took a bank statement and some school mail with my Raleigh address and they let me have some pistol purchasing permits. It won't hurt to ask the local sheriff's office.

Trying to sell "DPMS AR-15 Flattop Upper Assembly 223 Remington 1 in 8" Twist 24" Bull Barrel Stainless Steel with Free Float Handguard". Includes bolt carrier assembly. Upper is stripped, so no forward assist or dust cover.Bought it in October for a trip I was taking to Texas. There is a small scratch on the free float handguard thanks to it shifting in the case during the flight. Broke in the barrel in per manufacturer's instructions. Including the break in the upper has seen about 100 rounds. Very accurate. I couldn't promise what the MOA on it would be, but I had no problem destroying jackrabbits at 300 yards and even killed a deer with it over Thanksgiving. I love this but I need to raise some cash to pay for my honeymoon in June.$400 cash OBOI also have a "Leatherwood Hi-Lux ATR Professional Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 2.5-10x 44mm Mil-Dot Reticle Matte" mounted on it with "Burris 30mm Xtreme Tactical rings". I will include it for another $200.PM me with any offers or questions.THIS IS AN UPPER ONLY, YOU MUST HAVE AN AR15 LOWER TO MAKE IT GO BANG.

3/24/2010 12:28:13 PM
should be getting my pistol permit next week...what do people have in the way of a decent target shooter? looking for value here, not top of the line (something that uses cheap, easily found ammo would be nice, too)[Edited on March 24, 2010 at 12:33 PM. Reason : .]
3/24/2010 12:33:22 PM
check out the sig mosquito. i bought one off tww and i love it. affordable gun and affordable ammo.
3/24/2010 6:59:26 PM
are you looking for simply target shooting?or something that you can use for personal defense that won't kill your wallet at the range?if it is the former, I would suggest any of the ruger 22lr pistols (the 22/45 is designed to feel like a 1911 for target shooting)- but any 22lr pistol will do the jobif it is the later, I would suggest something in 9mm semiautomatic... and from there the possibilities are endless. I like S&W, XD, Taurus, Sig, ... well the list goes on... I am not huge on glocks but that is more because of the hype they have for them as opposed to the gun itself (I found their 45 to be pretty darn accurate and consistent), and don't think they are really a bad gun- I just wouldn't get one myself. For these polymer frame guns, you really just need to go test out and see what you like

You'll want to do either a 22 or 9mm. You really need to decide whether you want any self defense properties because it's a huge difference in cost. You can shoot for a week with 22 for the same cost that you'd spend in an hour or two with 9mm. There's also a fair difference in pistol cost as well. The .22 will give you the potential to scare someone but it's not going to do much from a defensive standpoint.Personally, if there's any desire toward self defense, I'd go ahead and go with a 9mm. If you don't plan on carrying it, get something with a longer barrel like a Glock 17 or Springfield XD9 Tactical (or Springfield's new XDm9). The extra barrel length (5" in this case, 4" is more common) will help with accuracy. The Glock & Springfield are both good values and are easy to find used. Their popularity helps them hold their value too if you decide to sell it later on. http://www.budsgunshop.com is a good place to check prices. Remember, ordering from there will require you to find a local FFL to receive the gun and that's an extra charge so consider that and the extra hassle when shopping. If you decide to go with the .22, a Ruger Mark III or 22/45 is going to be one of your best bets. They're 2 of the most popular .22 pistols made. The 22/45 is basically a Mark III with a different grip angle (closer to the "standard" of a 1911) from what I understand (I'm not a .22 guy). The Sig Mosquito and Walther P22 are two other popular choices but they seem to be pretty picky on ammo. Plus side to them is that they are more like a "real" pistol in the way that it looks & feels. If you're really up in the air, get up with some people from here for a range day. Most of us (gun guys) are pretty easy going and don't mind helping someone figure out what they want by trying a range of different guns. I'm not in the area so I'm out but it seems several of the people here go to PDHSC fairly regularly. Talk to whoever you're going to go with about what you need to do. Some will let you shoot for free, some want you to bring your own ammo, some want you to pay for their ammo (usually they don't want cheap ammo possibly gunking up the works), etc. Whatever you choose, good luck. It's a very enjoyable (and often addictive) hobby.*edit* forgot to add: Knockdown power doesn't really exist in a pistol. People love to talk about it but pistols are really pretty poor man stoppers. This is why shot placement is key. A 10mm isn't going to be less use than a .22 if you can't hit anything with it. That's one of the reasons that 9mm is so popular. Hit what you're aiming at. Everything else is secondary.[Edited on March 25, 2010 at 6:10 PM. Reason : .]

quagmire02, I was in your boat about 6 months ago and it came down to would I really be ready to pull a gun for defense when I'm not really that proficient in general? I talked to a bunch of guys and decided to go with a .22 first and then think about a larger caliber once I felt comfortable with pistols in general.I got a Ruger 22/45 based on advice and definitely feel it was the best choice for me. I tried a MkIII but felt the grip angle was too slanted. The action is a bit different from other semiauto pistols but it will literally take any .22 ammo. I've put about 2000 rounds through it (probably 5 different brands) since and loved it. Ammo is extremely cheap, you end up paying more for the lane at the range than over an hour's worth of ammo.Last week I bought a .45 1911 that I will be getting accustomed to, and at that point I will consider leaving it loaded nearby at night. It's a judgement call that's different for everyone, but it's never a bad thing to have a cheap gun to shoot when you feel like spending the day plinking cans or target shooting. If you want to try either let me know, I'll spot you any of the .22 ammo and we can split the .45 ammo if you wanna try that.

4/6/2010 3:39:51 PM
anyone have a stimulus deal <$100? I have a valid pistol permit, before you ask, would like either a shotgun (preferably not a breach load, but for my range atm i'm not gonna be picky), perhaps if someone has a 1911 frame in need of work, or an older .22 pistol. baiscally looking for >2 rounds at a time, and suitable for home defense.if $100 isn't enough, no prob I will ask again when I get my money right.I DO have an old single shot breach loading pellet rifle (the stock was cut down a little cause I was a kid when I got it, wasn't my idea trust me) that needs the gas chamber seals redone...it comes out in tufts of black when dry fired, be willing to add that to the cash I have on hand along with 7 boxes of .22 long, 5 are full, two have a few out of them.thanks and stay safe

Not sure what you are hoping to get out of $100...If you are looking for something that actually functions and fires bullets or shot you might have to up that number.
