So either someone is grey-shirting or someone is gone.

Grayshirt kids aren't part of the team until they enroll full time. That's completely different. Grayshirting is enrolling part time/taking a partial load at a community college so they get a head start on academics and don't count against the scholarship limit until the next year. But they can't participate in practice/be part of the team until the spring semester.

I may be confusing this with the rule that prevents a recruited athlete from walking on to a team and being awarded academic scholarships (or something, basically to prevent that from being a workaround for scholarship limits.)

But I know how grayshirting works. And it's also completely irrelevant to basketball. Basketball players don't grayshirt.

I have a feeling that Dorn is gone. I hope I'm wrong, but with him graduating last weekend seems like he could be looking for the next step...

Apparently everyone but Bates and Bey are already enrolled in summer school. So one of them.

Alternatively, Steere's dad could have went all roid rage on his son and popped his head like a pimple.

Lockett seems to be a nonsensical add, but SKJ is a nice land

The Lockett addition makes plenty of sense if the coaching staff knew Bey was wavering/had a change of heart. Gets another wing on the beach/in practice for this year without reaching for a low major guy and doesn't tie up a scholarship long term.

Man this has been a weird offseason. This is crazier than with Gott.

People seem to be think this is just how KK will do business, i hope they're wrong. (unless we win a bunch with this technique in the which case I was behind it all along)

All this mess actually ended up helping space out the scholarship a little better. We now have 2 seniors (Dorn, Lockett), 3 juniors (Johnson, Wyatt, Bryce), 4 sophomores (Beverly, Daniels, Harris, Funderburk) and 3 freshmen (Bates, Steere, Hellems). SKJ will essentially make it 5 sophomores because he'll have 2 years to play starting next year, but at least we have more than 1 senior now.

Only have one non freshman who's original school is NCSU. Maybe KK is trying to filter out NC State Shit

This is going to be more of the norm under Keatts.

Funny that we now only have 3 guys on roster that played minutes for NC State last year.

^sure. but to offer some context...bey never stepped foot on campus, so i don't think that has anything to do with his release. batts got recruited over and never played, so he transferred (likely down a level). hicks and kirk aren't acc level players, so they transferred. yurt is obviously the transfer that isn't explained as easily...although i think him wanting to play in a different system/for a different coach (especially considering KK didn't recruit yurt) is a pretty basic, reasonabl explanation. i get what you're saying, but i'm not so sure the "running till you puke will make you wanna transfer" logic really explains much.

Markell, bates, steere and hellems will be the only players on the roster that have not transferred here after being at another university. Thats just so odd

I mean, roster turnover is expected with a coaching change. And it makes sense to get transfers to fill in those upperclassmen spots rather than a shit ton of freshmen in order to space out the scholarships. Plus Keatts got fucked by the previous regime's poor scholarship spacing/use.

None of the players leaving have me terribly concerned for the state of the program. I mean it sucks that Batts left, but he got beaten out for playing time by Beverly. Other than him, everyone else was either not good at basketball or didn't fit the new system.

I don't think Bey fits that. He was our highest ranked recruit (still low but...), per Rivals anyway. The thing Gottfried seemed to miss was those 4 year guys who grew and became the glue of the team. Bey maybe could have been one of those guys.

Now if his open scholarship next year is filled by a much higher level recruit, fine, but so far he is the only loss that seems out of place (although if yurt actually attends GT rather than going pro, that will hurt a bit)

There's a few issues with the roster now that don't make a ton of sense to me, but I suppose that's part of the deal with using all 13 scholarships. Let them compete for a spot and if they can't hack it, the problem will take care of itself. In an ideal world, you load up on promising talent and have them sit while they learn the system but that's a reality for maybe 5 teams in the country right now - everyone else is going to see guys transfer if they arent looking at immediate PT. Shit, that seems to be why we lost Bey

It's just, the ultimate goal is to win a title and I don't see much of a track record of Mercenary Teams doing that. I think the closest parallel (includes the defense optional, all in fast-paced offense style too) is to Hoiberg's Iowa State, and they got to 25+ win seasons and 3 seeds. Never made it that far with them, though, but still, that ain't bad. Maybe if we get there recruiting guys out of HS who will stick around to develop gets a little easier.

Bey is an 18 year old kid who had a change of heart after the guy who recruited him got a head coaching job. Better for everyone involved that it happens now than after he's been on campus for a few months. I'm sure Keatts and company would rather have Bey than Lockett, but shit happens sometimes.

I don't expect the normal Keatts team to be 9 transfers.

I think a lot of what Keatts is doing is weeding out guys that don't fit the system while trying to be competitive every year.

We completely lost everything in our front court and had only Yurt on scholarship but his handlers weren't loving his minutes or usage so they pushed him to leave NC State. So we bring in 2 FR big, bring in a post-grad big, and bring in a big-time transfer prospect to make our practices better and to set us up for, potentially, a REALLY strong 2019-2020 season. Barring any attrition, we'll have 2 FR with a year under their belt, a SR in Walker, and then SKJ available with a year learning the system.

What is there to question about adding Lockett? He's a 1-year rental(think Sam Hunt) that we had the scholarship open for. He can give us ball-handling, rebounding, and defense. Remember Harris can't play until 2nd semester as well. Keatts loves to rotate a lot, so what is wrong with adding another experienced guard? Remember when we used to just add in 2*/3* projects late just because we needed bodies to fill out a depth chart and they wasted scholarships for 3-4 years? This is a much better approach.

Keatts really likes transfers, traditional and post-grad. This year will be telling if the strategy is going to work, but I think Keatts believes in his ability to find talent and find guys that fit in his system. What's wrong with bringing in transfers that you think need a chance of scenery or a scheme change? I mean look at what Nevada did this year with an army of mercenaries. Hell look at Cincy this year, they had a few transfers as well.

Keatts is going to continue to try and be as competitive as he can each season, and part of that to him is maxing out your available scholarships with post-grads. I doubt we see a season without 13 kids on scholarship, and I think the transfer approach makes sense because you aren't counting on true FR as much each season.

I know everyone is focused on this year, mainly because of how hard it is to predict attrition and what-not, but on paper at this point 2019-2020 has a ton of potential, esp. if we can bring in 4* Nickelberry and 5* Moore to fill the last 2 spots.

^I think we're absolutely a tournament team this year.

But we only lose Dorn and Lockett after this year and add in SKJ and 2 more players(most likely 2 FR).

Our front-court will be a huge question mark this year but our back court has an absolute ton of potential, we really shouldn't lose any of our back court going into next year and our front court should only be better.

Thats a pretty bold prediction when only 3 of our players have played acc ball before, and only 4 have major conference experience. We could be good we could be terrible, good luck to anyone that has to pick our acc finish location

Yeah my prediction is based on hype. Daniels was the best player in practice last year, so hopefully that translates to in-game. I think swapping out Freeman, Hunt, and Batts for Daniels, Bryce, and Harris is a huge win on paper. Just have to hope Daniels and Bryce live up to the hype.

Luckily 3 of those guys returning were all in the top 4 by minutes per game. Daniels has played against good competition with his team USA U19 experience, Bryce has held his own against ACC and NCAA Tournament competition, with Walker being a bit of a question mark just because he's coming off of an injury.

Our back court should be improved, but our success could hinge on finding a solid 5. I think our starting 1-4 is going to be better than last year, but it's going to be hard to find someone on our roster as skilled as Yurt.

19-20 is definitely the year that looks most promising, but it's no guarantee. Will Markell stay 4 years? Are we going to solve the 3 point shooting issue if its an issue this year? Because I don't see it addressed for the future yet. In fact the guys we'll be adding for that season (Harris, SKJ) don't help there at all.

I dont really know where to put this but, how could the NCAA not look into Memphis if this kid commits to Hardaway?

Seems like a open and close case of tampering

This is why Memphis hired penny. He's coached a bunch of really good recruits in high school/aau. It will be interesting to see if he'll be able to keep it up after this initial influx of talent.

Land Lecque and then either Moore or Williams and that's a solid class.

Think the odds of Lecque going pro have dwindled significantly. He's dropped to a 4* and highest projection I've seen is late 2nd. His 2018 AAU stats have been...rough. His 3pt shooting is at 15.8% and his FT shooting is 65.6%.

Super athletic that can attack the rim, but really needs to work on his handles(3.7 APG to 2.6 TOPG) and his shooting to make an impact at the next level. On paper he reminds me a lot of Rodney Purvis, both 6'4 about 185-190, super athletic, can get to the basket, but have aspirations of running the point some.

blake harris, dorn (will be gone and also not really a guard so fair enough), lockett (also will be gone so shrug), i guess i forgot that markell ended up pretty good at shooting so hes off the list (also, will likely declare and be gone) and then daniels and bryce are kind of question marks - daniels barely shot any at utah but wasnt bad, and bryce shot a good amount but was mediocre

i also forgot batts was gone so I guess its not so bad. although blake harris seems bad enough that he should count twice. really the roster limit of "bad shooters who are guards" in 2018 should be 1
