Simons entering the draft apparently
3/22/2018 9:37:39 AM
Yeah and has hired an agent, so no turning back for Simons. We're likely all-in on a post-grad big at this point, just have to hope one pops up that fits our system. We have 2 true C's on roster for next year, and both are true FR.
3/22/2018 9:46:15 AM
^i know steere and bates are listed as C. but steere is also listed as 6'8" on rivals...funderburk is listed as a forward and 6'9" on rivals (saw 6'10" somewhere else). could somebody that follows it more closely than i do tell me about steere, bates, and funderburk's styles and strengths? ty v much. also, i guess it's good to find out sooner rather than later about simons.[Edited on March 22, 2018 at 10:16 AM. Reason : but yes, i would think we'd be in the market for a grad transfer post player]
3/22/2018 10:16:27 AM
Bates - should be our C going forward. He's supposed to have grown this year to 6'11 but until I see him on the court, I would assume that height may be inflated. He's listed at 6'9 or 6'10 in most sites. He's long and very lean (right at 200) but a good shot blocker and his style is definitely more fitting at the 5. https://packinsider.com/2018/02/06/watch-4-star-nc-state-commit-manny-bates-back/Steere - 6-9 261lbs - more of a 4 than a 5 in my opinion because of his jump shot but has the bulk to play in the paint. I am probably the most excited about his upside than anyone.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9UErGOp4ywFunderburk - 6'9 210 but has been rumored to have grown to 6'10. #1 juco - he's a bit of a hybrid of the other two with more experience. Keatts has openly stated that he plans to use him at multiple positions.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frnbF2MlulkOur frontcourt is going to be legit in 2 years. 1st year will be a lot of trial and error in my opinion for these 3, to see where they fit. ^ty v much.
3/22/2018 2:24:49 PM
I saw a picture of Bates/Steere from their signing ceremony or whatever and Bates is clearly a couple inches taller than Steere. Also, he might not be a big, but I'm most excited about Saddiq Bey out of all the freshmen.
3/22/2018 2:42:44 PM
Funderburk is listed at 6'9" and 205lbs...that's RAIL thin. He won't be playing the 5 next year unless he bulks up a ton. For his JUCO team, Funderburk is a 6'9" perimeter player. I know he was listed as a C out of HS, but he basically wants to be KD. He's shorter but similar build and wants to have the same skillset. I think the most logical spot for a guy like Funderburk is actually to back-up Dorn next year and give us a nice little variation where we can play "small ball" while not giving up a ton on rebounding with him at the 4. Without adding a post-grad big, JUCO big, or if the transfer rules change(proposal now to allow anyone with 3.0 or better GPA to transfer and be immediately eligible), we're going to be looking at Steere and Bates holding down the 5 spot for us. Depth Chart: G: Johnson, HarrisG: Bryce, BeverlyF: Daniels, Hellems/BeyF: Dorn, FunderburkC: Bates/SteereI still think the best case scenario is adding at least one more post-grad big. I'd imagine we'd target an undersized big that can rebound, play D, and finish inside for us.
3/22/2018 2:43:45 PM
speaking of rail thin...manny bates is listed as 6'9", 195 on 247 and 6'9", 200 on ESPN, and 6'9", 215 on Rivals.[Edited on March 22, 2018 at 3:02 PM. Reason : g]

All 3 are skilled and should contribute between the 4 and 5 spots. I really don't see any of them being a 3 but who knows.
3/23/2018 1:45:07 PM
funderburk is the guy who stands on one of the corners as part of the 3 in syracuses 2-3 zone
3/24/2018 5:42:04 PM
3/25/2018 12:21:05 PM
dorn is a good rebounder for his size but hes really short so hes not actually a good rebounder
3/25/2018 6:23:43 PM
He averaged 5 reb/g in ACC play. Funderburk averaged 5 reb/g in JC play
3/25/2018 9:10:26 PM
i don't know shit about funderburk...but comparing per game averages at different levels of competition is kinda useless.
3/26/2018 7:00:15 AM
By "small ball", I mean playing 4 guards and 1 true big, and Funderburk is tall but he's not a true big and he doesn't play like a big. I think Funderburk will definitely see minutes and I think he can give us some insurance in case Dorn gets in foul trouble(which he tends to do), but I think people saw his HS rankings, his height, and him being listed out of HS as a Center and just assumed he'd play the 5 for us. He won't play the 5 and he'll be a wing for us, just not sure who he'll back-up next year as we're fairly stocked with wing players now.
3/26/2018 9:37:24 AM
I don't know shit about Funderberk either, but Dorn is a damn good rebounder regardless of but especially for his size. He was nearly top 20 in the ACC.
3/26/2018 2:40:30 PM
dorn was probably our team's best rebounder.
3/26/2018 3:23:06 PM
tower's just being negative, as usual
3/26/2018 3:53:33 PM
you can win while being bad at defensive rebounding, but you usually need to get something out of it. kansas, for instance, plays a bunch of shooting guards at the 4 and makes up for it by making shots. the bonus we get out of dorn is that hes decent (not great, but decent) at crashing the offensive glass and a good slasher. thats nice as a stopgap when your options are limited (as they were this year), but its not really taking full advantage of the mismatch youve created for yourselfthis isnt his fault. hes a mid major talent being asked to be a top 3 option in the acc. itd be like getting mad at beverly for not being a good pg if markell never came back and he wasnt up to the task as a freshman 300+ ranked recruit with trex arms
3/26/2018 4:53:57 PM
I mean...Dorn transferred in from the mid major ranks, but he’s better than a “mid major talent”. He’s an ACC caliber player.
3/26/2018 7:01:52 PM
3/26/2018 11:37:07 PM
Daniels apparently is better than any of them.
3/27/2018 12:57:16 AM
calling dorn a mid major talent was e man level shit
3/27/2018 7:02:11 AM
Tons of dudes transfer up from mid-majors and plenty of guys transfer down to mid-majors and find success. It's not unusual for guys to find their stride later or be overlooked in scouting. Remember when Graham at Kansas was a 2* recruit that grew 2 inches his SR year and all of a sudden went from a 2* PG committed with a LOI to App State to a guy begging to get out of his LOI because he was a 4* PG all of a sudden and had more options? You don't think Curry could have played in the ACC when he was at Davidson? Seriously?
3/27/2018 9:31:31 AM
^^ yup. tower gonna tower.
3/27/2018 9:38:39 AM
Yeah I was gonna make the “devonte graham is a mid major talent” comment but ^^ beat me to it.

https://www.backingthepack.com/nc-state-basketball-recruiting/2018/4/3/17191546/ryan-daly-nc-state-delaware-transfer-blue-hens-college-basketballSo we’re recruting Delaware SG transfer Ryan Daly. He’s a normal transfer so would have to sit a year (eligible for 2 more years) - unless the new transfer rule passes. In which case he may be immediately eligible...but the proposed rule is dependent on GPA so who knows.

I think I saw that State is also in the running for a guy that decommitted from UConn?

another guard transfer??? dang, i cant barely keep up with who is on the team now. Cant we just recruit hs kids for 2-3 years, so I can learn about them 1st
4/13/2018 2:59:08 PM
^^they don't give athletic scholarships. Doesn't mean that these kids have to pay to go there.
4/13/2018 3:07:55 PM
^^are you talking about the Walker guy? He's not a guard, and he has 2 years of eligibility (but he hasn't committed).
4/13/2018 3:12:19 PM
We're recruiting some traditional transfers(G) and a post-grad(C). Our scholarship spacing right now is really messed up. We'll have 1 SR this year(assuming Dorn returns), 1 SR the next year(Bryce), and 2 the following(Daniels and Johnson). Makes sense to target some traditional transfers if you think they can help. Plus I think Keatts is just a big advocate of transfers and the post-grad route, so I think this will be the norm here. Bring in a 1-2 year college player, let him sit for a year to learn your system and practice with your guys, then when they hit the court they're more prepared than a true FR. I don't think we can build an entire squad of those guys, but I think you can pepper them with your traditional recruiting when you find transfer options you like.
