I saw that earlier today, yea, I guess it hasn't been posted yet, I'll add the "extras" app has an Android emulator in it... Which you can download and use without having access to Inventor yet.

Installed the latest Sapphire 0.8.4 release for the droid and things are pretty snappy. Looks like a CM6 RC is also up in rom manager

2.1 Roms are definitely worth it for the Evo if anyone was wondering. About to flash Fresh 1.0 beta that was built on 1.47 holla!

Probably Fresh Toast kernel too. Should I opt for BFS or not?

lol. Exactly. The screens are plenty accurate unless you plan on drawing on your phone. Not to mention you can hold them any way you like.

looks like the Vibrant and Captivate have already been rooted

Even though they aren't officially released yet, the US versions of the Samsung Galaxy S (T-Mobile Vibrant and AT&T Captivate) have already been rooted. We should expect this by now, as it seems like it happens with all the hot new Android phones as they come around. Even better? This is a nice easy method -- no timing, monkeying with SD cards, no sacrificing chickens or doing rain-dances. Just load a file and boot into Samsung's recovery. Very nice to see a manufacturer playing nice with the hacking and development community in a time when some phones are coming locked so tight that if you slid a dollar under the battery door 3 quarters, 2 dimes and a nickle would come out"

finally got the incredible and have been messing around with it. i have a two part question:
1:is there way a native way to close apps?(without using the advanced task killer, which i downloaded anyway)
2:is it necessary to close apps when you're done with them? i'm guessing no, since i can't figure out how to do it without the downloaded thing.

You can kill running services by going to Settings > Applications but no in theory you shouldn't have to do this.

Last I heard it was still late July, Early August. There was a rumor of the 13th but haven't heard anything else about it. I'd just root and say screw it and stay ahead of the curve. That's one main reason I no longer have a desire to consider the Droid X

http://www.androidcentral.com/motorola-bootloader-lockdown-explained

Quote :
"Motorola: Droid X isn't a dev phone, buy the Nexus One if you want ROMs
Posted on Wednesday, Jul 14, 2010 by Kyle Gibb

So the bootloader on the Droid X is locked. We know this. For many developers and hackers, it's a bit of a disappointment as the original Motorola Droid became a de facto dev phone because it ran stock Android 2.0 and had an unlocked bootloader. That allowed them (and us) to easily flash new ROMs onto the phone.

So what's the deal with the Droid X? Motorola's Lori Fraleigh explains in a recent blog post from way back in February:

"We understand there is a community of developers interested in going beyond Android application development and experimenting with Android system development and re-flashing phones. For these developers, we highly recommend obtaining either a Google ADP1 developer phone or a Nexus One, both of which are intended for these purposes. At this time, Motorola Android-based handsets are intended for use by consumers and Android application developers, and we have currently chosen not to go into the business of providing fully unlocked developer phones.

"Securing the software on our handsets, thereby preventing a non-Motorola ROM image from being loaded, has been our common practice for many years. This practice is driven by a number of different business factors. When we do deviate from our normal practice, such as we did with the DROID, there is a specific business reason for doing so. We understand this can result in some confusion, and apologize for any frustration."

That's the way Moto wants it, and that's the way it will be. For the time being, it looks like the Nexus One will remain Google's official dev phone. It is also a sure bet that the Android hacker community will descend onto the X like a swarm once it is released, so have no fear. And it also stands to reason the "unannounced" Droid 2 might be seeing the same "feature."

Our question to you: Is this a deal-breaker? Or can you still not wait to get your hands on Moto and Verizon's new hotness?"

If I'm not mistaken, the bulge is about the same size as the evo, the rest is thinner so it probably won't be that bad

Anyone try out the new Swiftkey Beta keyboard?

I did, seemed very accurate and much faster than stock.... not as good as swype in my opinion though (of course I did not like swype my first time too).

I realize the bootloader on the X is locked (and will stay that way). But, you can possibly still get root and use apps that are for only root users right? This will just prevent flashing custom ROMs I believe. That alone is a deal breaker.

If I was on Verizon I would wait for the Samsung Galaxy Fascinate.

bootloader is how you flash ROMs that give you root, you can't root a stock ROM, unless there's a workaround that can do it without the bootloader, so possible yes, but doubtful.

nah, a device with a locked bootloader can still be rooted for apps like wireless tether, etc but custom roms is a no go unless they hack the bootloader. I believe there's a similar issue with the Milestone.

^ yeah, okay.. just wanted to make sure I was correct. Motorola is really missing the boat with a LOT of potential customers. I would never buy a phone that would prevent me from loading a ROM from the android developers.

Samsung took note and is hoping for the community to appease their slow update process, that is smart.

Response from one of the Sapphire developers over at DroidForums in response to my question wondering if/when the bootloader may be cracked. Motorola is really screwing themselves over.

Quote :
"in all honesty it doesn't sound good. the milestone has had a similar system in place and after ~9 months they have yet to break it without hardware modifications.

i heard that it was even worse in the case of the droid x, as they employ what is called an eFUSE. basically, if you try to load something on to the device that is not signed properly, then the phone bricks itself and the only way to get it working again is to send it to motorola, where they can open it up an reprogram it at the chip/circuit board level (using a method known as JTAG). i may be wrong about some of the specifics but this is what i remember hearing from birdman/p3droid, so feel free to correct me

Edit: this means that in order to even TRY to crack the bootloader, you better be willing to brick your device, because every failed attempt will result in a brick

seems like an awful waste of a good device to me."

Motorola is really good at locking down phones when they want to. Look no further than the Backflip for evidence.

I'm sure someone will figure out root and get a bootloader fix/workaround, but it won't be easy without special motorola developer keys/tools.

The Dell Streak appears to finally be coming out on the 19th on ATT. It's another decent phone, but a bit big for my tastes (5" screen).

I've had all the iPhones including the latest iPhone 4 as well as the Nexus One(rooted to cyanogen 2.2) and i have to say the the new samsung galaxy S (euro version) is straight up the perfect phone for me.. i feel that a 4 inch screen is the sweet spot between the 4.3 and 3.7. Plus the screen is amazing to see.. You have to see in person to truly embrace all its glory.. I didn't want to get the captivate 1st cuz they tagged it with at&t which is minor but still.. you get the front facing camera and the unlocked market(i think you can bypass it by rooting the captivate) and the overall look of it versus the us version.. i like being able to actually click the home button instead of a touch sensored one.. idk just my opinion.. heres a video of it using att in the us.. (this is not me in the video.. he really needs to cut his fingernails..

I'd rather get the captivate than a european Galaxy S.

Paying 200 (or 350 out of contract) vs. paying ~600

The captivate looks better IMO. It also has 16 GB onboard memory. No flash or front camera kinda sucks, but I'd take 1/3 the cost everytime. If I ever bought one of these out of contract I'd definitely root it. I imagine there will be plenty of good custom ROMs to try out before long

is it really only $300 out of contract.. i just assumed it would be the same as the euro one.. seeing that i just used my upgrade to buy the iphone 4 and then sold it for $800.. plus i also sold the nexus one for $500 so i just used that to buy it off clove tech from uk for $560.. they have custom roms already out at Modaco http://android.modaco.com/category/434/samsung-galaxy-s-s-modaco-com/
