Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Spare Time! What Is It?Essentially the http://folding.stanford.edu/ uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor. The North Carolina State University (http://ncsufolding.com) Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the top 100 in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the company of anyone who would like to help. All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-PS3) on it with great results. How Can I Help?Go to http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download,download and install the software. Our Team Number is 59.Click here - http://www.ncsufolding.com/?page_id=4 for more detailed installation instructions.Windows Computers:We recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client (but sometimes it has problems starting as a service, so you might have to restart the client manually or automatically via startup folder when your computer restarts). In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions. Mac and Linux Computers:There are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the text-only clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.PS3:PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! Do you have that set as a macro or something?

no, whomever posts the first post on the next page tries to cut/paste it so that it's always at the top of the thread, no matter what page anyone is on.

here's my FAHmon for people's reference on PPD.home - E8400 stock 3.0Ghz, OC to 3.6Ghz = ~2100PPDwork - E6600 stock 2.4Ghzlaptop - T2310 stock 1.46Ghzoh and BTW, swapping out my old E6600 for the new E8400 solved my FILE_IO_ERROR, apparently it WAS a hardware issue, my desktop has been cranking with no problems now for 2 days or so[Edited on January 28, 2008 at 5:31 PM. ^ you folding all three 24X7? If so you should be well over 5K PPD in no time assuming ~1600PPD on the e6600 and ~750PPD on the T2310...but now that I think about u might not be running the e6600 because of the errors]
1/28/2008 5:41:40 PM
notice the 3961 PPD in the lower right hand corner of the imageand you can also see by the image the E6600 as i described as my work computer is at 1350 PPDmy home desktop USED to have the E6600 which is now the E8400 you can see is putting out the 1905 PPDand yes i'm folding all (3) 24/7do you have photobucket blocked or something?[Edited on January 28, 2008 at 5:50 PM. Booo! My gorilla folding machines got rebooted. Two had WUs and 90%. I'll re-commender them tomorrow morning.

you jumped 17 places in the last 24 hours and 109 places in the last 6 days not an easy task[Edited on January 28, 2008 at 7:06 PM. Reason : .]

gg scanzero! you add some more machines or something?
1/30/2008 1:02:02 AM
i think i'm going to move up about 5 positions once i submit my next WU
1/30/2008 4:52:40 AM
The work unit would not upload for me last night. Has this happened to anyone before?
1/30/2008 10:30:49 AM
Most likly the server is down that the WU needs to be sent to. You can check the status here. http://fah-web.stanford.edu/serverstat.htmlThere are quite a few down. We need to put this on the team site.
1/30/2008 10:42:28 AM
The problem with gorilla folding is that your machines can be rebooted for their intended purposes at any moment without warning. Stupid legitimate computer lab users.

yo where is that fahmon program? i want it to calculate my shit

by the way, how do I monitor several machines (including ps3) from Fahmon 2.3.1?
1/30/2008 9:37:52 PM
1/30/2008 10:26:05 PM
They're all changed to 59. just wondering if it was jacked up or not b/c I didn't really see any progress happening on the work unit when I tried to use fahmon 2.3.1. the cpu is at 100% due to the smp clients.I guess it just takes a lil while for fahmon 2.3.1 to start reading what the smp client is doing. still trying to figure out how to get fahmon 2.3.1 to monitor my other machines so I can see what they are all doing. ]
1/30/2008 10:47:21 PM
Share out your FAH directory on your other machine, let's say it's called "Tracer", then when you right click and "Add a new client", Name should be "Tracer" and Location should be "//tracer/fah/" ... or use the IP such as "//192.168.1.11/fah/" for your local subnet or "//5.16.101.74/fah/" if using Hamachi, etc etc. I don't guess I need to detail this too much. Feel free to ask if you still can't get it to work.Oh, AFAIK FahMon uses forward slashes "/" for the address-space, however try back slashes "\" if it doesn't work for you.
1/30/2008 11:06:41 PM
1/30/2008 11:17:59 PM
yep that worked. damn there's a big difference between the smp client and the other client. ]
1/30/2008 11:18:18 PM
^^If you use your computer a lot then it will lower the PPD because you are stealing processing power away from FAH. You're fine. Just noticed, Quad-core ... ok you should check your idle w/o FAH running to be sure ... also make sure your config options are set to receive big units too.^Good to hear, and yes, very big difference. Between putting multiple cores onto one chip and the technological increases in processing power per core, the Dual/Quad+ core processors are great at what they do when compared to P4s!CPU comparison chart: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/common_cpus.html[Edited on January 31, 2008 at 1:54 AM. got it all up and running. was going to have 3 smp clients running, but one of my laptops is only single processor. haven't found anything that'll let me monitor the ps3 yet. but at least I'm turning out some good production with the 3 laptops and the ps3.
1/31/2008 2:09:59 AM
^ i still don't see how you're only getting ~1100 PPD with a Q6600 quad core...i'm getting nearly double that. did you set it up to receive big workunits? do you do a lot of other processor intensive stuff with that computer?
1/31/2008 8:58:54 AM
Why do people keep fucking with the 2 machines gorilla folding in a 60 seat lab!?!
1/31/2008 10:41:05 AM
now i'm getting the 0x7b (luckily not on the q6600)
1/31/2008 5:55:17 PM
^i'm still getting those, after i thought i had solved it with a brand new CPUi've now gone through memory, cpu and motherboard and same issues folding, i'm beginning to think i need a clean XP install[Edited on January 31, 2008 at 7:02 PM. Reason : .]
1/31/2008 7:02:27 PM
are you getting the 0x7b and the 99, or just the first?
1/31/2008 7:07:08 PM
both, first the 0x7b, then the 99, then it works, then another 0x7b, then another 99, then throw in a FILE_IO_ERROR for good measure
1/31/2008 7:35:13 PM
Could just be problems with the beta smp client ... not likely, but...
2/1/2008 12:33:33 AM
well from what i've read these codes are not codes coming from the F@H client but rather the mpi service which is an OS thingCoreStatus = 63 (99)+ Error starting Folding@Home core.
2/1/2008 12:34:36 AM
Damnit. My department sysadmin altered the options of the lab machines I've been using for gorilla folding to require a password to boot from a CD. I was going to to process like 60,000 points worth of WUs over the weekend. Stupid notions of proper allocations of resources and not abusing university equipment for unintended purposes...
2/1/2008 6:25:58 PM
You shouldn't have done it during the week and only for the weekend when nobody would notice.
2/1/2008 6:36:28 PM
that bastardtime to find a new lab
2/1/2008 7:15:22 PM
^ There's not many labs on campus that will run SMP units that don't get a lot of traffic. I'm tempted to go in and reset the BIOS on all the machines to clear the BIOS passwords. I think the cases are locks though.
2/1/2008 9:20:46 PM
UPDATE YOUR SMP CLIENTSmy beta clients expired Feb 2nd.
2/2/2008 6:53:14 AM
i was told they expire after 2 months[Edited on February 2, 2008 at 10:06 AM. Reason : ok mine isnt starting so i guess it expired]
