I have a pet peeve of horrible typing. So when I've been drinking it takes me much longer to type and text things out.

Looking for recommendations on tackle. I reckon we're going after drum. I also wouldn't mind going after croaker or other similar.

Tonight for dinner I made some really good Salmon Patties with a lemon dill aioli, and they were fucking delicious!

Honestly, I've always done best with a double drop bottom rig or a carolina rig with cut bait. I've caught some of my biggest drum with a frozen shrimp cut in half on the hook.
Throw out your cast net and see if you can get some free bait and just use that to fish.

As far as gear for sound side...I would use a rod that was around 7 feet, medium to medium heavy, and a fast or fastish action. That will make it more fun to reel in a good size red!

Then for surf, you want similar specs, just a lot longer. Minimum 9 feet, but I'd go 10 or 12 if you're comfortable with it.

Also, especially in the surf, make sure you get pyramid weights. 1oz -4oz the rougher the surf is the larger the weight you want. The pyramid acts like an achor and kinda digs into the sand to prevent your line from getting washed up in the surf.

Best to do surf fishing on an incoming tide, cast out just past the breakers.
Next best is to fish on an outgoing tide.
The hour on either side of exact high or exact low tide can be really slow. Not saying it's not worth it...it's always worth getting your hook wet, but if you were trying to plan your day around the best time to hit up the beach for the surf fishing, check to see when the tide is coming in.

Thanks! This is great advice. It confirms what I thought I knew. I've read a lot on the topic but I lack a lot of hands-on experience. I've got the appropriate rods for both use cases and I'll rig them both up. I've been fishing at Cape Lookout a bit lately but I'm going for something more luxurious by staying in a home with a toilet this spring.
