So tired of hearing about Lutz. Go away.

Does this mean we are out with Blake Harris? Or does it mean Allen is for sure gone? Or both?

I don't think Harris is anywhere near a sure thing. UConn just hired an assistant from Washington and he's talking a visit there along with Mizzou, Michigan St and Rutgers(???).

I bet he ends up at UConn or Mizzou.

We need bodies. I would assume we'll end up with a couple transfers coming in rather than scrape the bottom of the 2017 barrel.

Is it a good sign at this point that no players have come out(aside from DSJ) and said anything about leaving/transferring? Not sure the timeline of when that all takes place. Asking in this thread since it impacts recruiting, would think answers sooner rather than later would be important at this point.

Not really...it's a dead period for recruiting so a lot of coaches are making the rounds and trying to gauge interest in who they might be able to contact in terms of transfers...It won't be till around May/June for that.

For instance I think the Martin twins were late may, Washington was July and for transfers in, I think Lacey was July.

also it's still the middle of the semester, i would imagine that once the semester/school year ends it's a little easier to make those decisions. but i'm just guessing. the good news is that Abu seemed to indicate (after KK's press conference so it's been a while) that the NBA/going pro wasn't really on his radar....i know he probably wouldn't get drafted, but he seemed to flirt pretty heavily with leaving last year so i assumed he'd be likely to leave this year.

He will go get evaluated for the draft like last year and everyone will make a fuss out of that but don't buy into it.

Every player that has NBA sights should go participate...it's free.

Yea, we should get everybody back, and have a nice little roster for Keatts' first year. Signing best PG in the state was an excellent start.

Yeah I think it's still a bit new so people get worried about it but there really is no reason not to do this unless you think you are going to expose your flaws and hurt your stock, but that would only matter if you were a very flawed top 10 pick which is really pretty rare.

i get what y'all are saying...and yes, players should take advantage of that. but Abu, by the accounts i read, was very seriously considering leaving last year. it wasn't a case of him taking advantage of the new rule...which, again, no player should ever be faulted for doing. on the other hand, Anya also tested the waters last year but we all knew he'd be back and wasn't seriously considering leaving.

I don't think that Abu will leave. I think it's fairly likely that Yurtseven doesn't come back. Also wouldn't surprise me to see Rowan leave.

Mav has been really quiet through all of this. I'm not sure if he's really part of the team "family". I'm mixed on Yurt because while I probably wouldn't stick around if I were him, I've also read that he's a pretty smart guy and wants to actually finish his engineering degree. I mean take that with a grain of salt but I'm not sure why he'd major in engineering if he didn't intend on being here a little while.

earlier in the year there were rumors of Markell being homesick and wanting to transfer. that may not be the case anymore...obviously the playing time for him is there if he wants to stay. other potential transfers i could see would be somebody like Hicks or Kirk who have barely played...but i've read that KK usually played a deeper rotation than Gott did so there may be more potential minutes there for those guys next year.

Read the Johnson rumors of being homesick were over-blown, think most expect him to stay.

Mav is the one that's hard to find much info on, but the offense should definitely play to his strengths, only problem will be losing minutes because Gott was playing him more than he deserved.

Still, our roster doesn't look bad as it stands. Still think we could use another guard, and landing a guy like Harris would be pretty big(if that ship didn't sail with Batts). Obviously Allen is the perfect fit in what we need(ball handling and 3pt shooting), but KU just offered to lock that one up. Would be nice to add a solid shooter to the mix, esp. if Rowan were to leave early.

Kirk has been really outspoken about 2K so I doubt he leaves. I also think he's going to be a monster in his system.

Johnson / Batts
Dorn / Henderson??
Kirk / Rowan
Freeman / Hicks
Abu / Yurtseven?? / Kapita??

We could afford to add another guard and will be really thin there if Henderson leaves.

I haven't heard much about Rowan, Hicks, or Kapita's intentions. I'd imagine Yurtseven stays another year and it's anybody's guess on Henderson's eligibility. I wonder if they'll let us know sooner than later so he can at least try for the draft if he doesn't get another year.

i've seen people say similar things elsewhere. Kirk has a lot of improving to do if he's going to be a major contributor. he's hit a few threes and thrown down some nice dunks all in mop up duty. the potential is there for him to be a strong defender and a guy who can score easily in transition. but he's still got a long ways to go from the little we've seen from him. i mean, he's struggled with dribbling at times.

I agree he's wild. I also think that Gott and company did nothing to develop players and he was basically left to just fend for himself. He's super fast and can jump through the roof. Like you said, he's going to be great in transition and hopefully spread the floor since he should be able to score from the perimeter or underneath. Just the way that UNCW played, I think 2K will really focus on Kirk because of how versatile he could be for the system

Why would Kirk get a lot of minutes anyways?

Johnson, Henderson, Mav, Abu and Yurt7/Kapita will likely be the starters...

Kirk would only be a backup role for the moment, maybe Sub out with Abu or Mav if we wanted to play stretch like Keatts does sometimes but he has to be able to hit 3's in that case...which I don't see happening.

He could definitely play the stretch 4 if we wanted to go small. I think Mav actually moves pretty well on offense without the ball and he's a streaky shooter but he can light it up when he's on.

Spacing works when you have good shooters, right now Mav is clearly our best shooter, followed by Henderson(who might not be back) and then...hmm...Markell? It's a pretty big drop off after Mav/Henderson to the next best 3pt shooter on the team.

Kirk is a super athlete that needs to hone his skills, and I think Keatts is actually good at the teaching side of basketball, so I do expect Kirk to improve a lot. Will he be ready to be an impact player this year? I'd be surprised. Do I think he can be a role player that comes off the bench with high energy and gives us some good minutes? Sure.

Even this year he'd come in and hit a nice dunk or alley oop and then 3 plays later he'd just dribble it off his foot and turn it over. Hell his best bet to see the floor is to focus on D and rebounding, something we clearly lacked last year.

Wait is Keatts' system gonna involve convincing the other coach to just have a dunk contest? Bc if the system actually involves trying to play basketball, Kirk has a lonnnnngggg way to go.

Maybe Gott was a poor teacher but Kirk seems lost to a point that a college coach wouldn't expect.

Pretty funny how KK is going to transform some players yet others on the roster are a lost cause. Kirk is going to thrive but Mav is a lost cause, right? I also find it funny that people dislike Mav because Gott played him a lot, as if Mav was being asked to sub off but refused like that guy at the YMCA that won't leave the court with 20 people waiting to run despite being drenched in sweat and his team having lost their 4th game in a row.

KK does seem to want to go with a deeper rotation than Gott. so even if Kirk isn't a major contributor (doubtful he will be) he could at least get some meaningful minutes...which is more than he and Hicks ever got with Gottfried. if KK does indeed use a deeper rotation...9 guys maybe...Kirk will have an opportunity to play for sure. then again, a deeper rotation doesn't mean shit if those 8 and 9 guys are terrible.

[Edited on April 4, 2017 at 12:36 PM. Reason : f]

hell...maybe i'm wrong about Keatts using a deeper rotation of guys. saw this on backingthepack.com

Quote :
"An expanded bench is not necessarily likely with Keatts’ more energy-intensive system: in two of his three years at UNCW, the Seahawks finished 328th or lower in bench minutes. He wasn’t just running waves of guys out there."

so maybe just ignore everything i said idk

For the record, I haven't given up on Mav. I think Keatts will coach him and Kirk up and they'll benefit from the system more then they did in the high post offense.

I don't really see any players on our team as "lost causes". The only lost cause on our roster last season was Anya, and it's just because he stopped caring about his conditioning. Keatts would have rented a crane, hoisted Anya up, and thrown his ass off the team, or ran him until he quit, one or the other.

One of the big pluses for Keatts is his player development. So if we didn't expect him to come in and make our players better, that would sorta defeat the purpose of bringing him in.

I don't expect everyone to become All-ACC players, but I feel like talent wasn't the issue last year, it was scheme and effort. Kirk has always been that guy that you hoped developed into a useful player their JR and SR year, and I still think he's on pace for that. I could see him really being a good defender/rebounder as a 6th or 7th man his JR year and then a fringe starter his SR year if he adds a little offense to it.

I think Anya stopped caring because of his relationship with the previous coach.

I don't think Kirk is going to become a major contributor to this team, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him get 10 MPG.
