has a division, let alone a conference, ever had # 1, 2, 3 in the rankings? because it looks like it will be LSU, Bama, Slaw at the top after today

if the top 3 teams are from the sec, wouldn't you justlet the sec champion be the national champion and not even play a championship game? in other words, houston vs sec west winner.

Why is it retarded? Winning your conference proves very little in terms of your worthiness on a national scale. Houston is about to win their conference, they clearly aren't one of the two best teams in the country.

If Arkansas wins next week and then wins the SEC title they'll clearly deserve to play for the BCS title, they'd be the only team to beat LSU and their only loss would be to the #2 ranked team (Alabama). If LSU wins and then take the SEC title there is no doubt they're the clear #1... so who should they face? The most deserving 1 loss team would be Alabama based on strength of schedule and their only loss coming in OT vs. LSU.

i don't think they'd do a rematch and i don't think they'd put a team in that didn't win their conference. sorta like the ohio state v michigan debate a few years ago when florida got in and thumped ohio state.

The thing about all this "they won't make it a rematch" is that its not really in anyones hands. The computers account for a 3rd of the score and what could possibly justify a bunch of sports writers and coaches leap froging a team like VT over Alabama on their ballots?

Only reason that Michigan v. OSU wasn't a rematch was timing of the game. If they had played any time except last game of the season there's probably a rematch. Instead Florida got to showcase itself in a conference title game while Michigan sat idle.

I feel pretty confident that LSU is going to trounce Arkansas. Ditto for Alabama over Auburn.

I don't want to watch two SEC teams play for NC.

I think none of the voters want to see this happen either. I think the non sec school with the highest ranking will get a big bump the last week of rankings to get into the NC.

I hope this happens too, because the SEC might very well say "fuck you guys" and split from the BCS, effectively killing it.

I think SEC will get a dose of College Football havok next week.

If Auburn pulls the upset, then it will be the winner of LSU vs Arkansas against the highest ranked non sec conference winner.

I think this is the best possible outcome for the NC.

If R-Kansas wins then LSU loses to Georgia that will be quite a mix up. Alabama is going to be suppressed because they aren't in that sec champ game.

There is still a lot of football left. Things usually work themselves out.

Except for when they don't, like that year that Auburn went undefeated and left out. Or the year that FSU inexplicably played in the title game instead of Miami despite losing head the head to head matchup, or when Nebraska got thrashed by Miami when it should have been Oregon getting thrashed by Miami.

IF LSU beats Arkansas well and wins the SEC title then I vote we cancel the national title game and just crown their asses.

Seriously, they'd likely play Bama (unless Auburn gets it together) since I doubt even an ACC winning VT gets jumped over them by the Coaches. Even if Bama were to beat LSU in the title game I would have a hard time with them being declared champs over an LSU team which beat them in Birmingham.

It just feels like a LSU&Everyone Else year.

/Assuming they don't Shut the Bed against Arkansas or Georgia, of course.

Won't happen in the final rankings because either Arkansas or LSU will HAVE to lose a game, knocking them down. Still, LSU/Bama or Arkansas/Bama for the National Title looks very real, either way it's just a rematch.

[Edited on November 20, 2011 at 1:11 PM. Reason : Arkansas just doesn't feel as dominant as LSU.]

^ Bama can't play LSU in the title game. Same division. SEC title game is Georgia vs. LSU.

Anyway:

yeah, a three way tie in the SEC west (which is what would happen if Ark beats LSU) means the winner is determined by the highest BCS ranking of the three. Right now it looks like that would be Alabama, but who knows what the Coaches and Harris poll voters would do with Arkansas/Alabama.

Hell, it'd be possible, at that point, to have a Bama/Arkansas rematch for the National Title. That would, at least, be slightly more entertaining than Bama/LSU looks to be.

Best case scenario for VT is for Arkansas and Alabama to lose next week (and beat UVA and Clemson, of course), but I guess that's obvious.

georgia southern put up more points in t-town than LSU did. the SEC is the B1G of 2006. Highly ranked teams floating on past years' credentials in a league that is otherwise full of crappy teams. Everyone said the same exact shit about Ohio State and Michigan that year. We all know how that turned out.

which is why you don't have an 8 team playoff, anyway. you have a 16-team one and invite all conference champions. otherwise, why even have those teams in the division if they aren't eligible anyway. moreover, why do these upsets matter now but they wouldn't matter in a playoff? Are these upsets not affecting conference championships at all?

Quote :

Why? Why should the actual title game not matter? Are you saying that the Patriots should have been awarded the Super Bowl the other year when they lost to the Giants simply because they beat the Giants in the regular season? That's straight up tardmo level logic.

Miami took the smart approach. Go ahead and self-impose the bowl ban to get it out of the way, since they know it would be a meaningless bowl. UNC may get a bowl ban imposed by the NCAA, and end up trading a Peach Bowl appearance for a Belk or Music City bowl appearance (if they hire a good coach and improve).

Only the Coaches Poll and the Harris Poll are required to choose the winner of the BCS title game. For everyone else in the nation it's still a subjective title. Until the NCAA decides to step in and develop a championship for the FBS division you can consider whoever the hell you want to be the champion.

Then the games matter even less because they would all make the playoffs anyway.

Oklahoma St: Still wins conference with win over Oklahoma
Oklahoma: Vice versa
Oregon: Wins PAC-12 north with win over Oregon St.
Clemson: Already clinched ACC Atlantic

So they're not affecting conference races that much but they greatly affect the National title race which they wouldn't if all of the teams made a playoff anyway.

yes they would. our game would have knocked clemson out of an 8 man.

less games matter with bcs because there are only a few teams involved. right now there are 2 games left in the entire season that actually mattter. With a playoff there would be at least 15.

Ifthey stay undefeated and end the season as the only undefeated there will be more than a few groups out therer calling the National Champions.

Of course, they won't get any coverage because the press only cares about the BCS and the AP.

That's just the system we have. You could set up your own trophy and issue it to NCSU if you wanted to. You don't have to justify a damned thing and it's not like the NCAA will do anything to stop you.

Clemson is not that great and they have not been playing well recently. The ACC sucks.

Alabama, while not an offensive juggernaut, has a great defense. Auburn's offense BLOWS. Their QB's are horrible. Dyer is awesome, but he's been shut down by decent defenses because they are so one-dimensional.

NC State has racked up 33 sacks so far this year, good for 7th in the nation (tied with VT, Rutgers, FIU, Temple, and Stanford). That is 10 more than the vaunted defense that resides 20 miles west of Raleigh, who are ranked 41st in sacks.

Only these teams have more sacks than State.

1 Texas A&M 41.0
2 South Florida 37.0
3 Oklahoma 36.0
4 Florida State 34.0
Illinois 34.0
Cincinnati 34.0

you are looking at this too narrowly and in the perspective of just one specific year. Sure, it might not matter this year, but let's go to a different year where there are a couple undefeated teams up top and then people vying for at-large spots in the playoffs. Then, they magically matter again. I'd much rather have a 16-team playoff than a 2-team playoff, but that's just me.
