Where is that Wee Heavy from, Prospero?
5/3/2012 4:31:05 PM
AleSmith Brewing out of San Diego
5/3/2012 4:52:12 PM
^I'm a big Wee Heavy fan, had the AleSmith at GABF and thought it was great, come to find out it's the best in it's style so I thought I should track down a bottle.I typically drink Dry Dock's Wee Heavy when in season, and fortunately I get Belhaven distributed here as well, so those are my local go-to Wee Heavys. Old Chub is a pretty awesome Scottish Ale I use as backup Would love to try the Olde Hickory Seven Devils if anyone has one they're willing to trade.

^I would if i hadn't drank the 2 i had It surprisingly dry for a barrel-aged beer

Yeah the smokejumper was much better than I expected, since I'm not a huge fan of smoked beers.
5/10/2012 8:24:20 PM
Firestone Walker is one brewery I wish I could get my hands on easily.Hoppin Frog, one of the breweries I gloss over each time i'm out shopping. Don't think i've ever made a second glance at their stuff.

looks like this news is a few weeks old, but i just read about it:http://www.beerpulse.com/2012/04/stone-ruination-tenth-anniversary-ipa-coming-to-bottles/10th anniversary ruination -- this beer made me the hop head i am today (not 10 yrs ago but close), hope i can import a few of these this summer when a friend comes to visit...

Stick it to the f'ing man.

Duck Rabbit Hoppy Bunny is.....well, average. It honestly has very little in common with the American Black Ale style, IMO. Milk Stout is about the only thing DR does well, everything else just isn't very good.

Prospero - I'm going to a wedding in Denver in September. Do you have any places that I MUST go to? Will probably only have Saturday open to check something out, be it a restaurant or brewery.
5/18/2012 11:32:54 AM
Downtown Denver I'll give you three:Bar:Fallingrock Tap Househttp://fallingrocktaphouse.com/beer/75+ taps, 130+ beers, almost always have Pliny the Elder on tap, along with a lot of CO offerings, food here is average.Freshcraft, Euclid Hall and StarBar are all acceptable alternatives.Breweries:Great Dividehttp://greatdivide.com/#/beerUsually have 80% of their beers on tap, somewhere around 14+ taps, free toursDenver Beer Co.http://denverbeerco.com/All the locals hang out here (if they're not at Great Divide), giant patio with tons of picnic table style seating (biergaarden) and around 8-10 different styles of beers, they hardly ever brew the same recipe twice, so it's hard to know what exactly the quality will be as they're always trying new ones. Our breweries can't serve food, but chances are food trucks will be hanging out at GD or Denver Beer Co.[Edited on May 18, 2012 at 12:43 PM. nice, i have a hanssens gueuze sitting in my fridge right now too. was thinking about cracking it tonight.]
5/18/2012 8:25:57 PM
Prospero, how much $Denver do you spend on beer every year?
5/19/2012 10:26:13 AM
too much... i've been terrible staying in budget the last 2 months because of trading, trying to get some beers i haven't had before. i should be good for awhile, although i have a couple special beers being release that are limited that I have my eye on. Two sours coming out from AC Golden (yes, I know it's owned by Coors) "Hidden Barrel Series" the Peche which won a silver at World Beer Cup along with their Apricot... and some beers being release from Elevation Beer Co. that just had their grand opening today (bottles to be released in Denver next week or two) http://www.elevationbeerco.combiked over to star bar last night, had a couple goodies:Leopold Whiskey Barrel Aged Belgian Yeti (Sweet blend of whiskey went well with the Yeti but thought Maker's was still a better fit)Leopold Apple Whiskey Barrel Aged G'Knight (Sweet blend of whiskey kind of dominated this one, could barely taste the G'Knight)Dogfish Head Black & Blue (good fruit beer, I liked Red & White and this was very similar in quality and great flavor)Firestone Walker Parabola (incredible as usual, actually better than the bottle imho)Odell Saboteur (not as good as the bottle)Odell Shenanigans (awesome as usual)New Belgium Tart Lychee (pretty good, I still like La Folie & Terroir best)i didn't post my Black Tuesday trade, but also got a bottle of that with the Beat.[Edited on May 20, 2012 at 1:03 AM. Some interesting beers I hadn't seen before on this trip to Brawley's in Charlotte...thanks for the tips Prospero
5/20/2012 5:11:38 PM
Haha, I picked up that Rogue yesterday too. It's been on the west coast for a good while now, bu just made it here in the last week.
5/20/2012 10:14:46 PM
Good luck to both of you, I skipped that one. I've heard you'll either love it or hate it.
5/21/2012 12:25:02 AM
I've enjoyed some Maple Porters recently, we'll see how this one turns out.
5/21/2012 6:38:08 PM
good places to get growlers filled around raleigh?
5/23/2012 3:40:19 PM
Enjoying a growler of Foothills Double IPA right now.
5/23/2012 6:16:46 PM
Growler fills are only legal at a brewery in NC. You won't find any fill stations, but can pick up sealed growlers at most bottle shops.
5/23/2012 10:10:38 PM
We've got at least a dozen growler stations around charleston now...I've got three within walking distance fom my house and one is a piggly wiggly!
5/23/2012 11:24:13 PM
seriously, founders beers in general and double trouble in particular are so good. i cant wait til july for devil dancer
5/23/2012 11:48:58 PM
Red Oak Big Oak's back. Sweeeeet.
5/23/2012 11:51:34 PM
I was about to give the Rogue Maple Bacon a try until the guys at whole foods said it was just about the worst thing they'd had in a long time. If it were a porter, it would make a lot more sense than it being an ale.
5/30/2012 2:37:42 PM
i use maple to carbonate my beer and it's really good (consider that all the sugar goes to alcohol and just leaves a smoky flavor) But bacon?? wtf? is the beer salty or something??
5/30/2012 2:42:54 PM
Read the malt bill:http://rogue.com/beers/voodoo-bacon-maple.phpIt's why I skipped it... 3-different kinds of smoked malt + munich malt.... doesn't even sound good.Maple is great for brown ales and porters... it's just the smoked malt addition, the only thing I hate worse is peated malt.
5/30/2012 3:14:24 PM
jeeze people, it's a novelty beer based after a novelty donut, from voodoo donuts in portland.don't think too much about it having bacon, it's trying to mimic a donut that has a slice of bacon on the top of it. http://voodoodoughnut.com/menu.phpwhich, is kinda rad. if you get a chance to swing by portland, stop in the shop. they're open late, and have all sorts of crazy donut concoctions, i had one with lucky charms on top. went by after sitting in tug boat's brew pub, and drinking their stout. a local friend of mine took me there, with a pint of hagendaaz coffee ice cream in hand. ask the bartender, and they'll pour the stout, drop a cannelle of the ice cream in, and goddamned if it's not delicious.(but the rogue beer is not that good anyways)[Edited on May 30, 2012 at 3:32 PM. Had a Rochefort 8 last night. So damn good.

Was wondering if anyone has seen the new release from Mother Earth at a store? It is a Blackberry Wit aged in pinot noir barrels. The are making 3 more wine barrel aged beers this year the next will be a peach something aged in chardonnay.
5/30/2012 8:56:39 PM
Finally broke into one of my faithfull ales. pretty good. only one left.
5/30/2012 9:06:25 PM
last night got into a jester king - noble king and it was kinda just ok. somewhat disappointing. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/24018/75575also, one of the grocery stores near me seems to carry a ton of boulevard beers, and had one of the BBQs last night, and it was phenomenal. http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/423/43670i havent seen the bbq there often, but the store carries the sixth glass (quad), saison brett, rye on rye, double wide ipa, and long strange triple as normal carries. for a grocery store that doesn't have a large beer selection, their randomly carrying some really high end stuff from boulevard is kinda interesting.
5/31/2012 9:47:50 AM
how is BBQ still on the shelf? that was released the last week of December '11 about 6 months ago? that and Rye-on-Rye are two of the best Boulevard beers, along with Saison-Brett.i have some Jester King I'll probably be getting into next month, Boxer's Revenge, Noble King, and some Black Metal (before farmhouse)... looking forward to them as well, hopefully not too much of a disappointment [Edited on May 31, 2012 at 10:52 AM. picked up 2 half-cases of magic hat vinyl bottles for $7/each last night at total winemost spectacular lager in the world? of course not...still a good summer brew and great deal at $0.63/bottle
5/31/2012 10:53:32 AM
i was pretty surprised. it's a grocery store pretty out in the sticks in rural texas, and i bet they dont get much clientele that would know what bbq was. lone star drinkin' roughnecks. if you find you want any of the other jester kings (post farmhouse), let me know.[Edited on May 31, 2012 at 11:04 AM. it's been awhile since i've been beer shopping. i think i'll change that tonight
5/31/2012 11:25:53 AM
went to the grocery store with the bbq, all sold out now ... rumor has it there's still some to be had in the northern suburbs of houston.so, here's the haul for a couple different stores... 2012 real ale sisyphus barleywine (going to stick this in the beer closet for a while, maybe have one a year), boulevard the sixth glass quad (this is one of my favorite things right now), boulevard rye on rye, 355 and 750 of a 2010 lindemans gueuze (plan on just sticking the 750 into the closet, may drink the smaller one soon), 2011 oak aged yeti (will age), new belgium lips of faith tart lychee, st. arnolds homefront (more for the charity).might go back and buy a bunch more of the sixth glass quads. i seriously could drink this every day.[Edited on June 2, 2012 at 10:42 AM. I really liked that Tart Lychee, it's almost champagney to be honest. Maybe more cider.

Does anyone know how to go about getting some Henry Weinhards Private Reserve here in NC? It doesn't appear to be distributed here but my girlfriends dad constantly talks about wanting to get some. The online retailers can't ship to nc can they?
