depends on what kind of work you're looking for. Each staffing agency usually works with specific career fields. Some work with administrative, others with technical fields, etc.

I've got several good phone calls from staffing agencies all around. I wouldn't limit yourself to Raleigh as most agencies have clients all over the united states.

I know we are seriously in the market for material handling engineers with significant experience. Probably doesn't apply to anyone on here though that I can think of off the top of my head.

well, I got an interesting phone call today. My old boss called me, saying he had heard from another manager at the company that I was starting work for that manager in two weeks. Only one problem: I've not even been given an offer, much less been told that I was hired. Woops! Either way, I accepted a job in Charleston, so I'm looking forward to the eventual conversation of "what do you mean you aren't coming to work for us?" Kind of makes me glad that I didn't go to work for him, lol

Anyone interested in a junior analyst position at an IB in RTP?

Not sure of pay but would be entry level. Im guessing around $40k

Would work in credit risk management where you would review/rate countries and banks. Would be a good way to get foot in the door in finance. If you are interested pm me...tryin to get a referral bonus

so i am employed right now by the USMC. we are currently at an number of about 202,000 marines. we actually increased to that about 3 years ago. now they are trying to cut 15,000 marines as soon as they can. so all of a sudden there is this huge worry by a lot of guys whether they will be able to keep there jobs for very long. hopefully they can transition to the army or navy or private sector. its a shame the military is gonna dump a lot of these guys based on MOS because they want to cut numbers all of a sudden. theres a lot of shit going on and i hope yall are reading up on it, specifically if you are military. because our retirement pension is gonna change, gays in the military, the budgets and everything else is changing.

my dad was in the corps and i am now too. and the things i tell him about....sometimes hes just like wtf?

^ you're screwed

I'm getting annoyed with a company that I interviewed with a few weeks ago. I interviewed on a Thursday and they said they should be calling the following Monday/Tuesday letting people know about a second interview (third if you count the 5 min phone interview before the first one). I think I did well and she was impressed with some of the things that I had mentioned in the interview.

They didn't call so at the end of the week I called them and spoke with the lady I interviewed with and she said they were just really swamped and I should be hearing from them within the next couple of days and she pretty much confirmed that I would get a second interview. Well I've called once a week for the past couple of weeks and she keeps saying they same thing, that they're swamped.

I'm very tempted to tell them that I know they're a pretty small company and the position I was interviewing for is a fairly vital position to get things done quickly and I know they're busy but if they hire me I would then be able to help out. You know the whole, "slow down to speed up" thing.

Well had another interview, with the same agency I am working for (promotion).....went okay, but very small department and they have several contractors which if it is like where I work currently, they will just hire the contractors as perm and are just going through the motions of interviewing. I asked them about that, how many contractors they have, they said 3, and there MIGHT be 3 openings they said....hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I don't understand companies hiring so many "full time" contractors these days. The company i'm going to work for has a Dell tech contractor that has been there 10+ years. Why not just hire the guy?

^ More nimble. So much easier to can a freelancer / contractor as soon as something goes south. It's a bit harder / more expensive to get rid of a salaried person. That's my guess, anyway. Sucks.

Just to let you guys know that the new Target in Morrisville (Park West Village) is opening 10/5 and is hiring

Not sure how you apply since I can't find a phone number for that store...I guess just fill out an application online at target.com?

yeah probably, then go in and drop your resume off with someone in person would be my best advice.

Girlfriend applied to a job at the local CVS pharmacy online (protocol) early this year and she was a top candidate, but never heard from them. I went in to get some meds a few months ago and asked about the position, and they were still looking for someone for the position. Turns out they never saw her application because they didn't know it was there or some shit, and they advised coming in person to talk to the hiring manager.

For anyone interested, next Monday the Japan Consulate of Atlanta is hosting an informational session on the JET Program. It's going to be in Withers Hall Room 331 from 5:30. As long as you'll have your bachelor's degree by July 2012 you're eligible for a teaching job in Japan.

When you eliminate contractors, it doesn't impact your layoff numbers. More expensive for the company, but for certain fields, it makes sense.

Also they don't have to give a contractor the same benefits as a full-time employee. Cheaper for them to hire contractors.

Contractors are used if the help the company seeks isn't long term. In other words, if a project is viewed as short term, a short term relationship such as a contract would be involved as opposed to giving someone a job, and then firing them after they pour their soul into a successful project.

considering that I declined an offer where I was living it sucks even more, and that offer has already been filled. basically 2000 into a deposit/first rent on a rental house in Charleston and I know I won't see that again.

There can be a million reasons. The company decided to institute a hiring freeze between when they gave an offer and when you're supposed to start, company cut funding for that particular position, company decided to can whatever project the position was associated with, etc etc etc

^, ^^
The three times it happened to me, twice was because of a credit check and my credit officially sucks now since I've been unemployed for so long and the other time was because they canned the project I was going to be working on.

One of the times for the credit check really pissed me off. I was already there on my first day when they said they forgot to run a credit check and once they did they said they had to let me go

That's what I'm hoping but I've heard of people not working in finance or having anything to do with money getting their credit pulled as part of the application process which I think is pretty shitty.

None. One was a construction company and another was a store manager for a retail place.

Lots of places require credit checks now. I've gone into a couple of staffing agencies and have given them a heads-up about my credit so they could try to send me jobs that didn't require credit checks and I was told that every one of their clients requires them.

Edit to add that not every staffing agency is like that, but a couple of the ones I've been to have been like that

I've been laid-off three times and its taken a while to find work each time. And I have three kids so we've had to live off of credit cards for a while and couldn't really pay on them for a long time. Also have lots of medical bills since being laid off so much means lots of time without insurance. And the kids seem to know when we don't have it cuz thats when they have all their accidents

Edit to add that I don't wanna hear any lip about not having kids until you can afford it. My wife was on birth control when she got pregnant with two out of our three kids. The third, well, that one is our fault
