Limping with AJ is a good move unless you're in late position in an unopened pot. The rest you simply have to raise. Not raising JJ and QQ makes any overcard a threat. Not raising AK means you HAVE to improve, and even top pair isn't sure thing.Letting other limp in gives them a cheap opportunity to hit a big hand. This is exactly what they want. PUNISH THEM FOR IT. Raise their mark asses and kick them off 8-6 suited so they can't flop a straight on you. Figure out how much you need to bet to get 1 opponent, possibly 2, and bet that. Either you'll win the blinds or stand a great chance to be winning post flop.If you're good at reading strength (and the table starts respecting your raises) you can play a marginal hand every now and then and either scare 'em away or bet them off their missed flops.

Wow, playing some limit tonight, I couldnt win a hand if you wanted me to. Playing limit 1/2, it gets raised to me, I reraise with 77. Flop comes A79, he bets, I reraise, he calls....turn is a 3, I bet, he raises, I reraise, he calls, turn is a J, there is no flush draw, so I dont put him on suited cards, so I bet, he raises, I call. He turns over 108os Thats after I got beat 4 other times tonight with trips(2times) a straight once, and a flush once. And every time they raised the entire time until the river when they finally hit. Im tired of playing perfect and losing online, its getting old. Honestly, does the play get better up in the higher stakes, say limit 5/10 or a 100NL buy in game? I am tired of losing to bullshit players who keep chasing shit when I clearly outplay them. Had a sick run on empire today.. playing 25 NL I went from 25 to about 340 at the same table over a 3 hour period, I don't think I've ever caught that many good hands. I had aces five times, kings four, pocket threes like ten (Got quite lucky when I played those, made about 3 or 4 sets) as well as all the other pocket pairs quite a few times. I think there was a 10 hand or so period where every hand was AK, AQ or a pocket pair. Too bad I'll never get that lucky again :-P
10/20/2005 3:52:12 AM
That is a sick run, over 13x your buy-in. I've played the 100NL tables for a long time and the most I've ever gotten one up to was a little less than 600.

hey justin, last night at a 1/2 cash game, i got busted down to 32, and still managed to cash >450 without rebuying. In 2 hours. It was hot.but yeah, ^^ that is sick....The most ive done on a party 25 table (its been 2 years) was ~160...but it Noid, it looks like there are a few more in for the vegas trip, and i found out that the "poker" rate at the old horseshoe (now just binions) is 32/night after tax..... (with no real min play required). it may be a dump, but thats cheap as fuck.

OK, it's been a few days since a good story. I've been playing at Foxwoods still. I love live play so much better than online play it's not even funny. I'm up right around $1700 in about 30 hours of play there, but that's not really important. I guess I just wanted to stroke my e-p33n prior to telling my stories. The first story is a hand I wasn't involved in. I don't remember the exact situation because I was pretty spaced out until after the turn, but I know there was a small preflop raise and a few callers. Anyway, the flop comes 1082 with 2 clubs. Some minimal betting, and the turn comes the 3 of clubs. Well, one guy bets, another raises, the original bettor goes all-in, and is called. Anyway, one guy turns over 64 of clubs, the other guy turns over AQ of clubs. Of course the 46 guy is sad and he's all like "I need the 5 of clubs".... well of course the river was the 5, giving him the biggest suckout ever. Each guy only had about $125, so it wasn't that much, but still a crazy beat.OK, this next story actually involves me and is one of the strangest occurances I have ever seen at a poker table. There was this guy who had been playing fairly loose all night. he wasn't bad by any stretch, but he made a lot of calls followed by a hand muck, so I knew he liked to see if he was really beat. Anyway, he had been live straddling all night. It didn't affect me at all because he was several seats away, but I do not like live straddlers. He did it for like the 4th time, and I told him as I folded, "Next time you do that I am going to raise you." I don't know if he thought I was kidding or didn't care or what, but sure as day, next time around he live straddles. Anyway, I look down at Q6 offsuit. Not a very good hand, but I still raise his $4 straddle to $25 thinking I can just steal all the limps. Well, much to my chagrin I get 2 callers. Not good. Well, I think, maybe I'll get lucky and hit Q's or 6's or something on the flop. Unfortunately, as the cards came out I saw AK4. I needed some help. Not backing down, I fired a $40 bet at the pot, praying they would fold. The first guy thought about it a lot and then reluctantly folded, but Mr. Live Straddler thinks about it and calls. Uh oh. The next card is a 7, no help to my desperate runner runner plea. I look over at his stack. He has about $150 left, so I bet $100. He thinks and thinks, starts to count his chips, and then finally, after about a minute, folds. Whew.Pulling off probably my biggest bluff ever, I flip over my cards and say "Now let that be a lesson to you to stop live straddling." The guy looks at them and gets all red then just gets up and leaves, leaving his remaining chips on the table. I assumed he was just trying to calm down, but the button passed him once, twice, three times. After about an hour and a half with still no sign of him, the floor guy comes and collected his chips. I still don't know if the guy ever got his chips or not. I stayed about an hour later and he never came back to the table looking for his chips. It was very very odd.

i dont understand why people are paying money for pokerstars play money on ebay, but im gonna sell all mine and go to vegas
10/20/2005 11:31:40 PM
Live straddling is when you are in the position to act right after the big blind, you double the big blind preflop without ever seeing your cards, making you last to act. For instance, the small blind puts in $1, the big blind puts in $2, and the guy to the left of the big blind says "Live Straddle" and throws in $4, becoming in essence the "really big blind".

I've had my sickest run online this week. Last week I was down $50 for the week combined online and in person. This week I just paid my rent.Ben that is some good shit. I couldn't go because I had no actually cash in the bank, just in online poker accounts I just cashed out though.

I get disconnected and come back to my 45th place finish out of 400+ when I was 4th or 5th overall chip stacksWhile I'm in this tournament... i'm also doing a 5 buck sit and go, end up heads up with dude..even stacks. I get Jc8c in small blind and limp in, he checks. Flop is Ad10c9c,,, and I get disconnected... and come back to my 2nd place finish.I'm not happy... i'm a poor college student[Edited on October 21, 2005 at 3:00 AM. Reason : grrrr]

live straddling is no longer legally allowed in ac.ballys was the only place that allowed it in the nl games by house rules.you could still do it in limit at other places, only you were no longer last to act. the low limit (actually limit) players loved it when you blind stadled utg and then bet the flop before the cards come blind without ever looking at your cards. itll piss off the nits, bring action to the table, and make you look like a total gambooler.and with a true live straddle you can do it from anywhere on the table, and it doenst have to be 2x the big blind. you can stradle for whatever amount you wish to. (in nl of course)it happened to me last week, a guy was live stradling at a 1/2 cash game about 6 hands in a row. what pissed me off the most was that i was immediately to his left, making me utg every hand.i pick up AKs and raise his stradle of $9 to $35.. folds around (its 6 handed) and he calls.flop comes K52, he immediately goes all in for his remaining $85.I immediately call. he flips K9. delicious.anyone who plays at this wednesday night game will know who this is, he's mainly a stud player.[Edited on October 21, 2005 at 6:11 AM. 10/21/2005 6:10:11 AM
I don't really see much point to live straddling besides rattling other players. Is it so you become last to act? and what happens after the flop? does first to act go back to the blinds?[Edited on October 21, 2005 at 12:39 PM. Reason : x]

10/21/2005 12:58:16 PM
I don't understand the point of straddling either. As a matter of fact, I have never seen a player that I consider "solid" ever do it. To be honest, I don't mind if people do it if it's not my blind. As a matter of fact, if I am in the dealer seat and someone live straddles, that is awesome, because many times you'll get 5-6 limpers. So a hefty preflop raise from the button can take down a $30-40 pot.To answer your question, the person to the left of the straddler is first to act, so you have basically purchased the last position.

So, crazy hand today. This Asian dude came to the table and was a raising and calling machine. At first I thought he was a really good player, but after a couple hours, I realized he was pretty bad. He'd raise just about every pot preflop with anything to about $15-$20, which isn't a horrible play, but then someone would raise him substancially and he would call and suckout. For me, that's the worst kind of opponent because I like to be aggressive, so it kinda deters me from raising preflop with anything that I don't consider a premium hand because I know the guy is gonna call. So anyway, I am sitting back with about $150. I have only played a few hands and had not showed a winner yet, but I definitely got the impression that everyone (except crazy Asian) respected my bets. I am in first position at a 9 person table and look down at 2 black kings... finally. I just call, waiting to set the trap. Crazy Asian raises to $12 and gets reraised to the guy next to him to $40. Everyone folds to me, and I do a pretend ponder, and then push all-in for $150. Crazy Asian calls, and the original reraiser thinks about it and cals also. At this point I am 90% sure I have the best hand and hope they are sharing the ace. Unfortunately, the following sequence of events made me not so happy. Crazy Asian flips over AA (ack!) I am thinking it can't get any worse when the original reraiser flips over 2 red kings. Ack!! AA vs KK vs KK. Crazy Asian has us both covered, and he exclaims "I have AA, I can not lose hand!!" Well, this is a stupid statement because there are ways that he can be beat, but they are very minimal (2 flushes and a straight). Anyway, his hand holds up and I lose my stack. I ended up down today $100, the first day I have been down in the last 6 trips or so. I was really disappointed that hand, but what else can you do but push in that situation.....
10/22/2005 3:24:38 PM

10/22/2005 8:05:31 PM
played my first high stakes game last night. started off pretty, ended badly.my friend told me that everyone usually buys in for $100, so i bought in for $100, and then i realize most of the men had between $500-$1,200 worth of chips when i got there. the blinds were $2/4. so i was pretty much short stacked right from the start. i played really tight, folded nearly every hand, cause every time i tried to limp with a suited ace, someone would raise $20 or more preflop. i finally get pocket 10's in late position with 2 callers, so i just limp. flop comes k/8/10 with 2 clubs on the board. everyone checks to me and i go all in for $80, trying to look like i'm bluffing. of course some moron calls me with 3/7 suited and doesn't hit, so now i'm up to $200 or so in chips. then i get pocket 6's and limp in again. flop comes 2/3/5 with 2 diamonds. first guy bets $20, second guy folds. i raise $40 more on top of his $20. he calls. turn comes 10. he checks. i bet another $40. he calls. river is a 7. he checks. i check. he shows k/10 suited. is that not a bad play on his part to chase a flush by calling a 3X raise with only blinds in the pot?especially for the fact that he knew i was a tight player since i had only played one other hand, in which i had gone all in and won.[Edited on October 22, 2005 at 9:41 PM. See there is your flaw. You can't expect a bad player to make a smart play. In the same way, you can't expect a bad player to understand pot odds or anything like that. A bad player will never fold top pair and will call on most any draw. I guess your biggest mistake was entering the game with only $100.
10/22/2005 11:10:41 PM
yeah i know, i never would have played if i knew i was coming in as short stack, i thought everyone was in for $100 until i watched the first hand take place between 2 guys and the pot was over $400. i was like i wanted to get out of there. i knew all it was gonna take was one guy to bust me. oh well, i made $40 of it back tonight in a different game.

I've got it all back from playing online today Going to play another live game too. Be careful doing that because today someone did the same thing and their flush card boated me up and i took about $120 off of them. I was going to fold no matter what you bet I knew you were drawing to that or you had a ten.I need to learn to quit when my head isn't in it. [Edited on October 23, 2005 at 10:17 PM.
