hahahasupposedly Newman will visit Kansas on Tuesday
6/3/2016 3:58:44 PM
Come on Gott, you better use your recent momentum to lock down Newman.
6/3/2016 5:18:10 PM
Apparently 4* PG Markell Johnson will be visiting this week. Still questions if he ends up in the 2016 class or 2017 class, but he'd be ideal for the 2016 to practice with DSJ and get some PT behind him. Not sure what that would do with Newman, but would help to have another guard this year.
6/7/2016 8:43:39 PM
nice. it seems like we're seeing a change in Gott's tactics. maybe i'm reading too much into some of this, but in the past he was content to go 8 deep and not willing to fill out the roster for the sake of filling out the roster. but this offseason he's seemed to be more and more aggressive about filling out the roster. maybe last year's injuries helped him change his mind on that a bit.

Well, I think the staff would love to take both Johnson and Newman, but I don't see both wanting to play together(very similar styles), so I think the first to commit gets the spot. Just have to see if we can get Newman in on a visit.Apparently we're also in on Jordan Matthews, post-grad from Cal, who is a great 3-pt shooter(42% for career I believe). Would be a nice pick-up considering we have some "good" 3pt shooters but no consistent threats, outside of Rowan. Adding any of those 3 would be pretty big pick-ups.[Edited on June 8, 2016 at 8:34 AM. Reason : .]

his change in tactics is very evident with the recent changes to the coaching staff.recruit recruit recruit

I can't find it at the moment, but someone on PP posted a quote from Gottfried (maybe during one of the Wolfpack Club caravans) basically acknowledging how the college game has changed with so many early departures, transfers, fifth year guys,, etc. and saying something like you have to get as many good horses on your team as you can.

Johnson's visit supposedly starts today. Not sure if he would be able to commit yet (if he wanted to) because of academics, but it sounds like things are leaning our way. it doesn't seem like Matthews/Newman should be mutually exclusive since Matthews would be gone by the time Newman is eligible, but some on PP are implying we could get 2 but not 3. not sure if they know what they're talking about, though.

well yeah that part was a joke.but caleb and barber were both better from long range than Rowan. people need to stop acting like he's a sharpshooter. he hit 33% of his 3's. he's closer to a dennis horner than a scott wood.[Edited on June 8, 2016 at 4:24 PM. Reason : HONEST]

6/8/2016 4:51:59 PM
no, but they're all basically the same age.also 37 >>> 33Hell, Purvis shot better than Rowan as a freshman. I just hope than Rowan can grow into a similar player that Ralston Turner ended up being. They both are streaky, not great shooters with a penchant for turnovers.[Edited on June 8, 2016 at 5:03 PM. Reason : HONEST]
6/8/2016 4:55:14 PM
mav is definitely no wood, not many players are. mav also showed up to campus in like august...i think it's fair to expect a bumpy freshmen year in that case. he's got plenty of room for growth.i also think ^ is selling ralston turner short as a player. [Edited on June 8, 2016 at 5:19 PM. Reason : f]
6/8/2016 5:18:51 PM
Mav also showed an ability to occasionally score inside the 3pt line when needed, as opposed to Wood. Isn't Hondo supposed to be a shooter?
6/8/2016 5:33:32 PM
I'm not gonna argue (yet) that Rowan is a great three point shooter, but you sound like you didn't even watch any games last year. Maverick shot a LOT of threes out of necessity when we had few other options on offense and/or were trying to play catch-up. Kind of silly to compare his freshman year to those of Wood or Purvis given what they were asked to do... Mav attempted 7.3 threes per game last year, Wood attempted 4.7 his first year and Purvis shot 2.2.
6/8/2016 5:37:25 PM
I watched Rowan shoot a lot of ill-advised threes last year, not late in the shot clock and when he wasn't open. Those weren't out of necessity. Those were because the coach gave him the green light to shoot whenever the hell he wanted. I've previously mentioned that I think he played too much and that our best lineup involved both martin twins on the floor instead of Rowan, but I strongly feel that Rowan was promised playing time and Gottfried allowing a guy shooting 33% from 3 to heave up as many shots as he wanted is proof enough for me.I'm also not selling Turner short as a player. I liked him a lot. But he was definitely streaky and definitely had turnover issues whenever he wasn't catching and shooting, which is exactly how I would describe Rowan. I don't think Rowan will ever be as good a defender as Turner, because he's so godawful right now.
6/8/2016 5:59:41 PM
i guess i mostly just took exception with the statement that turner was not a great 3 point shooter. while he was streaky (most 3 point shooters struggle with that) and couldn't dribble or defend - much like wood...he was a really good 3 point shooter. maybe i was just reading too much into your post. turner was not as good as wood, but he was pretty damn good. again, maybe i mis-interpreted what you meant.

just looking at stats here and a few things really surprised mehttp://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/maverick-rowan-1.htmlhttp://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/players/caleb-martin-1.htmlCaleb Martin actually attempted more 3s (as a % of total FG attempts) than Mav...particularly in ACC play where 72% of Caleb's shots were 3s compared to 65% for Mav. both had pretty abysmal turnover%...although that's not really surprising. Caleb's was actually worse overall, but better in conference play. anyways...wasn't trying to prove a point, just got curious and wasn't looking at their stats. also, man...caleb martin started the year so, so hot. and then went so, so cold.[Edited on June 8, 2016 at 6:27 PM. 6/9/2016 10:31:04 AM
^i think it was a Wed-Fri visit. so it's still ongoing i believe...but i haven't seen anything about it other than a picture somebody tweeted with him and JCole hanging out at the practice facility.

Rappers hanging out at practice is probably going to draw attention to our program, both good and bad.
6/9/2016 3:28:25 PM
Just curious, what's the similarities between Luther Campbell and J Cole? I google and saw that Campbell is now a high school football defensive coach and has held other coaching positions. Is that what you're referring to?
6/9/2016 3:47:59 PM
luther campbell was a big part of Miami football in the early 90s. not sure what was ever proven, but i think it's alleged that he helped compensate players and stuff like that. but to answer the question, there's no real similarities.but i'm all in JCole or whoever being at practice or around the program...gotta get dem 'croots.[Edited on June 9, 2016 at 3:55 PM.
