I've been with out internet access for a few weeks, but hope to rebound my production in the next few days.

I just downloaded and started running the SMP version on the computer I built for my parents. 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo oc'd to 3.1GHz. I also saw that it can run on certain GPUs. Is it possible for F@H to run on the 8800GTS at the same time?100% CPU usage definitely heats it up. After playing the Crysis demo the temp was around 116, 5 minutes of F@H and it's at 122.

^ I think I read some instruction to avoid running the CPU client on the same machine with an SMP client running. Did you set it up to run as a service so it restarts each time the PC is restarted?
1/2/2008 3:31:57 PM
^Thanks, I'll just let the SMP client run.It isn't set to run as a service right now, but I may do that later. When I get back to my apartment to start next semester, I've got a computer that sits in one room that we use as a music/print server that I plan to run folding on 24/7. It's not a dual core system though. I've also got another system that I may use for a while if I can get it fixed.

i'm in 96 place now...gonna be 95 soon....i'm like the little engine that could bitchesSupport Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Spare Time! What Is It?Essentially the http://folding.stanford.edu/ uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor. The North Carolina State University (http://ncsufolding.com) Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the top 100 in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the company of anyone who would like to help. All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-PS3) on it with great results. How Can I Help?Go to http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download,download and install the software. Our Team Number is 59.Click here - http://www.ncsufolding.com/?page_id=4 for more detailed installation instructions.Windows Computers:We recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client (but sometimes it has problems starting as a service, so you might have to restart the client manually or automatically via startup folder when your computer restarts). In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions. Mac and Linux Computers:There are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the text-only clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.PS3:PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! Every time my computer restarts, mpiexec.exe shoots up to near 100%, and the 4 fah_core programs only use 50% of the other CPU core.I end up having to reinstall the SMP client every time I reboot, which requires me to stop the MPICH2 service, run through the installer, and then install.bat. If I'm in the middle of a WU, it deletes it and starts a new one.Is it critical that you run through install.bat? I don't want to install the fah cruncher as a service (I just run it manually through a command prompt), but is the MPICH service required?
1/3/2008 6:54:50 AM
i may have fixed my problem i described on page 50/51basically i uninstalled, booted to safe mode and deleted every entry in the registry that had stanford, fah, or folding in itthen reinstalled.i'll let you know how it goes. first WU and no errors

Ran across this today:http://linuxminded.xs4all.nl/?target=writings.plc&writing=fah-with-knoppix-on-windows-network-shareBasically a HOWTO on running a Knoppix LiveCD (on a system w/out hard drive) and folding with data from a windows xp share, pretty cool

New PS3 Client is out v1.3 It does not look like there are any performance changes. Now you can play your mp3's in the background.
1/5/2008 9:18:44 PM
got the smp client up and running on my penryn
1/5/2008 9:27:39 PM
+1 We're up to 87th place now.
1/5/2008 9:42:58 PM
So I have a PS3, I'd like to contribute to this. What's the best way, just let in run while I'm in class or something?
1/5/2008 9:44:27 PM
Just let it run while you are not playing it. You can also set it up to activate after a specified time of inactivity like a screensaver. Generally. I just start folding manually after I finish playing a game or watching a movie and then just stop it when I'm ready to play again.
1/5/2008 10:29:13 PM
I got the SMP working as a service, but everytime I restart my computer it deletes it's work and starts over.Looks like it's this:[04:03:00] Client-core communications error: ERROR 0x7b[04:03:00] Deleting current work unit & continuing...that happens as the service is being stopped right before the restart.

if dakota man put in some type of cooling system could he overclock it and get like say 3500 points per day?
1/9/2008 5:13:40 PM
I need a much better heatsink for it. I got a 10 dollar one at intrex because the one I ordered wouldn't fit on my motherboard. After that I should be able to overclock it quite a bit. Right now it runs under load at around 54degC, so I don't really want to mess with OC'ing until I get a better heatsink.

^to run it in linuxapparently native linux is the best, but VM linux still gives you more PPD than in Windows, i'm guessing it has to do with memory management, but i'm not sure
1/9/2008 5:33:30 PM
^^ You have to run 64bit Linux to run the SMP client.

i've resulted to running Ubuntu on VMware to see my problems are hardware related and to see if linux will be faster/more stable, i'll post the results
1/10/2008 3:05:13 AM
1/10/2008 3:20:38 AM
^ yeah...and is that only on quad-core machines, or would i better off running vm on my dual-core or even my old busted laptop (which is actually doing quite well)?
1/10/2008 10:51:44 AM
just FYI, my frame time in Windows is 18-20min., with VMWare/ubuntu it drops to 34min. stick with windows unless you have quad-core or can run native linuxgonna try VMware 32-bit ubuntu next, and if it's not faster, go to VMware 32-bit XP to see if it's hardware-related or not***going to be in the top five (yet again) for about a week it looks like*** w00t! then back to my usual #6 spot[Edited on January 10, 2008 at 2:49 PM.
