Of previous government shutdowns, what was the cause? Has there ever been a shutdown over trying to delay something that was already a law?

It's almost like the GOP doesn't understand what losing an election means. Repealing Obamacare, cutting food stamps, gutting the EPA, cutting taxes on the rich, those are all things that Romney/Ryan ran their campaign on and lost badly. Yet somehow, they still feel entitled to demand all those things happen before anything else gets done. No wonder most Americans feel they are acting like spoiled children.

most americans disapprove of elitist obama and the job he is doing, and the republicans who care about the ordinary man are trying to get stuff done to pull us out of this economic slump (that obama doesn't even acknowledge)

Republicans do care about the ordinary man, in the sense that the ordinary man is currently white, christian males.

This is rapidly changing however...

Compromise is choosing between A side's ideal versus B side's ideal.

If A and B agree that X is bad, but B is threatening A with X unless they get their way, it's not compromise-- it's hostage negotiations.

I am interested in how the conservatives are bashing the ACA by saying that it is bad for Americans, but when asked to provide one single item that they don't like, they will defer to other meaningless statements without actually saying anything.

Why is this their strategy? Is it that they actually don't understand the complexities (not that likely), they don't want to go on record for being against something that may come uü in elections (proabable), or they just know that the base doesn't care about the actual details (most likely)?

"American voters oppose 72 - 22 percent Congress shutting down the federal government to block implementation of the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, according to a Quinnipiac University national poll released today. "

"Voters also oppose 64 - 27 percent blocking an increase in the nation's debt ceiling as a way to stop Obamacare, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University poll finds. "

"American voters disapprove 74 - 17 percent of the job Republicans in Congress are doing, their lowest score ever, and disapprove 60 - 32 percent of the job Democrats are doing.

"Americans are certainly not in love with Obamacare, but they reject decisively the claim by Congressional Republicans that it is so bad that it's worth closing down the government to stop it," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "

Quote :
"Gridlock in Washington is mainly because Republicans are determined to block any Obama initiative, 55 percent of voters say, while 33 percent blame Obama's lack of skill.

In another question, 28 percent of voters blame Republicans for gridlock, while 10 percent blame Democrats and 58 percent blame both equally.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Monument_Syndrome

Quote :
"The Washington Monument syndrome, also known as the Mount Rushmore Syndrome, or the firemen first principle, is a political tactic used in the United States by government agencies when faced with budget cuts. The tactic entails cutting the most visible or appreciated service provided by the government, from popular services such as national parks and libraries to valued public employees such as teachers and firefighters. This is done to gain support for tax increases that the public would otherwise be against. The name derives from the National Park Service's alleged habit of saying that any cuts would lead to an immediate closure of the wildly popular Washington Monument. Critics compare the tactic to hostage taking or blackmail."

The only thing making them slightly tolerable to listen to this week has been the notable absence of Carmen. Not that KC and the other guy aren't chuckleheads on their own, but that woman is beyond the pale. I do love the rabid obedience to McCrony though....

So now enough House Republicans have gone on record saying they would vote for a clean CR to guarantee it's passage. The only thing keeping the government shut down is Boehner's refusal to bring it to the floor for a vote. Of course, that's been the case for days but at least now it's out in the open.

Well it is good to know Renee Ellmers will still get paid while 800,000 workers won't and people go without potentially life saving cancer drugs:

http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/10/03/3250988/dome-ellmers-keeping-congressional.html

As some North Carolina congressional lawmakers defer pay during the shutdown, GOP Rep. Renee Ellmers is refusing to do so – and her remarks are drawing the attention of an advocacy group.

“The thing of it is, I need my paycheck. That is the bottom line,” Ellmers told WTVD, the Raleigh ABC station Wednesday.

More than 70 congressional lawmakers are voluntarily not taking a salary during the partial government shutdown. Democrat David Price of Chapel Hill and Republican Robert Pittenger of Charlotte are among those donating it to the U.S. Treasury. Republicans George Holding of Raleigh, Virginia Foxx of Banner Elk and Mark Meadows of Cashiers are not accepting their pay.

Ellmers makes $175,000 a year (not including special interest money).
