Anyone have any idea what's up with the 7 story Tower of Two Guys? They're paying $TEXAS for crane rental and yet it's been stuck on the 2nd floor for months. Are there even crews on site anymore?Wonder if they're encountering some issues with faulty construction. A project of almost identical scale in Asheville got derailed for a year due to cracks in the 2nd floor slab. Wound up being an issue with post tensoning of the reinforcement in the concrete, and the fix was well into the millions.

^ what is this tower of two guys?

The building that is under construction where Two Guys used to be

^4 I was wondering about the same thing. It looks like work hasn't been done on it in months. Gotta figure they want it to be open by August so they can get tenants in the place by the start of the '16-'17 school year. Those apartments to the left of Zaxby's look like they've been 90% done since September, but I guess they're basically just sitting there empty until next August. The Two Guys apartments/retail place would probably like to avoid that, but that crane has just been sitting there for at least a month now.

Litigation over scheduling between developer and builder, costing both shitloads of money. Neither side wants to blink first, so they both lose.

LOL, it took less than twenty minutes for three of us to put down that Irish pub idea.Is this "e-cig shop" gonna be special in anyway? Cause I thought those places were tax shelters, not competitive businesses.

I keep hoping that that strip of shops where Pita Pit used to be will be knocked down and they can put something half way decent in that spot. It's had like 10 different tenants over the last 5 years.

^ I don't know anything about what's going on behind the scenes, but the crane is still sitting there with no progress having been made on the building. Anyone know what's going up in that spot where HotBox used to be? Changed from one pizza place to HotBox and then sat empty for the last few years until it was knocked down a few months back. Drove by today and saw that they were already putting something back up in the space.

Velvet Cloak Inn to be torn down for a student housing complex. http://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/blog/real-estate/2016/03/velvet-cloak-inn-raleigh-hillsborough-street.html

Is some on-campus housing being eliminated too, or are less students living "away" from campus
3/29/2016 3:27:44 PM
the student hapartments that are further away are becoming less students and more non-student affordable rentals. students increasingly expect luxury features and a better location, that's the market that the development is targeting
3/29/2016 4:19:10 PM
Plus, walkability to North Campus and parts of downtown is a pretty big appeal over going South towards Tryon.

Do we need to start an "Avent Ferry Road Revitalization" thread that we can bttt in a few years when it gets really slummy and the city needs to burn some money?

two guys
5/5/2016 12:27:35 PM
I was looking forward to seeing that one open up and see what would be going on the ground level retail since it's really the only apartment that's being built in that area of the street (with the rest going on the end near downtown and in the Zaxby's/EV area). I saw there's now a Vietnamese place in the bottom level of the apartment building that went up directly across Dan Allen from Nelson Hall, and Stanhope now has a pizza place opened up next to the CVS & Ihop.

Are there any dive bars on Hillsborough Street or is everything moving towards generic ethnic casual dining?
5/5/2016 6:30:43 PM
kinda feel bad for the kids at State these days - there aren't really any cheap watering holes like PB's, Katmandu, Farmhouse/Cantina, Five O'Clock, The Keg (after my time), etc. all that land has been bought up by 16-unit apartment developments. East Village is the closest thing to a dive you'll get on Hillsborough. Player's Retreat too but event that has changed. This also contributes to the chaos on Glenwood South when school is in session.

http://raleighpublicrecord.org/news/development-beat/2016/05/11/development-beat-the-h-street-kitchen/Sounds like McDaids is next in line to get a revamp after H-Street Kitchen is completed.

that's awesome... McDaid's really junked up the front of Porter'salso great content in that story up there
5/13/2016 10:35:44 AM
I don't know how many of you have been to Charlottesville, but this new H-Street place kind of reminds me of the Boylan Heights Burger Bar on the Corner at UVA. Pretty excited to see that place once it opens up. I'd give them my business strictly due to the fact that they put a massive slobbering wolf logo on the wall.
5/13/2016 1:38:51 PM
We'll see. They're pouring a lot of money into a location with a pretty spotty history. Hopefully the overhead won't crush them.
5/13/2016 3:27:19 PM
I think if they cheap the prices down, 8-12 dollar food/ 3-4 beers. they can succeed
5/13/2016 3:50:09 PM
I worry about the prices. History has shown for a place to succeed on Hillsborough St, they have to have decent prices that students will pay. The article states "The food will be priced in the $8-$18 range." I have a feeling the lower end will be appetizers and the upper end will the entrees, which has me worried for them. They better have some good specials. I really would love for this place to succeed, but for that to happen they have to have inexpensive food and beer offerings. That's why I love Mitches. I don't think anything on their menu is more than $10.
5/13/2016 4:17:01 PM
The old Ferguson's Hardware strip is now a wing place, a cell phone repair place, a vape store, and Marco's pizza.

Unconfirmed Rumor: The Alley (and construction site next to it) have been bought out by Target. You heard it here first. Please confirm if you can.

H Street Kitchen is open. How long until it closes?
8/5/2016 3:38:54 PM
That Target rumor sounds ridiculous, but they could be looking at putting in a small format store. Walmart tried that in rural communities with their Express store concept that failed, but is having success with its Neighborhood Market grocery stores. Still seems like a ridiculous idea and bad gamble if true.
8/5/2016 8:38:58 PM
8/6/2016 12:59:23 AM
That Target rumor sounds shitty considering there's a pretty big CVS that just opened down under Stanhope that is closer to most of the apartments & dorms down that way anyway. I wish the Alley would put some money into their place to renovate it, they have a massive bar/food area that is always empty. There's so much more they could be doing with that place. That construction site next to it looks awful though. They knocked all that down almost 2 years back and have maybe 25% of the skeleton of the apartment buildings up that were supposed to go there. I tried H-Street last week. Great food, awesome space inside. The prices aren't bad for the entrees, but they need to have a bigger bar-type food menu (burgers/sandwiches) if they want that to be a place people come to watch games during sports seasons. I thought the appetizers were a little overpriced for the size of the portions too, paid $10 for nachos and they were probably 1/3 of the amount that you'd get at East Village. Also could do with having some good drink specials. Overall really nice though, hopefully they can tinker with the menu and everything after having been open for a couple of weeks.
