^^ i'm debating it...though the laptops are generating (imo) significant points for me, and cost less than $2.85/month to have folding (i had to get SOME use out of that watt meter, didn't i?)...desktop is a bit more of a power hog, generates more heat, and takes up more space that i don't really have oh, and i'm #21 on the team and coming up fast oh, and page 50 [Edited on December 7, 2007 at 1:05 PM. Support Cancer Research and the NCSU Wolfpack With Your Computer's Spare Time! What Is It?Essentially the http://folding.stanford.edu/ uses your unused CPU cycles to model how proteins fold in the human body. The misfolding of proteins is often involved in well known diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson’s disease. Because this endeavor requires massive amounts of computing power, their project uses spare CPU time on computers that would otherwise sit idle in homes and businesses across the world. Here at North Carolina State University, we have formed this team in order to donate our spare CPU time to help this important endeavor. The North Carolina State University (http://ncsufolding.com) Folding@Home Team (Team # 59) was one of the first teams to join the Folding@Home project, and was the very first University-based team to join. We are currently ranked in the top 100 in the world and are ramping up production in an effort to make it into the Top 50. We are all dedicated to doing our part to help end some of these terrible diseases, and we would appreciate the company of anyone who would like to help. All it takes is the installation of a small piece of software and your computer will start completing Work Units for the project and the team. The Folding@Home process runs at the lowest possible priority so you can run it 24X7 without slowing down your computer or interfering with your everyday computing tasks. If you have a Sony PS3 Game Console you can also run Folding@Home (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-PS3) on it with great results. How Can I Help?Go to http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download,download and install the software. Our Team Number is 59.Click here - http://www.ncsufolding.com/?page_id=4 for more detailed installation instructions.Windows Computers:We recommend using the "text-only console” client for most windows computers. If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor, be sure to install and run the SMP client to get you and the team far more points than the standard console client (but sometimes it has problems starting as a service, so you might have to restart the client manually or automatically via startup folder when your computer restarts). In general, its best to stay away from the graphical clients. If you have a Pentium 4 with Hyperthreading, its best to turn off Hyperthreading in the BIOS if you know how. Feel free to post in this thread with any questions. Mac and Linux Computers:There are both "text-only" consoles and SMP clients for Linux and Macintosh computers too! If you have a dual/quad/etc core processor be sure to run the SMP client as you'll get far more points than the text-only client. But the text-only clients also help out too if you only have single-core processors.PS3:PS3s currently provide over 60% of the processing power in the Folding@home network and are capable of producing many points for the team. If you have PS3 system version 1.6 or later, you will see a Folding@Home icon in the Network column of the XMB (PS3 Networking menu). Just click on the icon and that's it. If you don't have 1.6 or later, perform a system upgrade. Make sure to use Team #59!The more computers and PS3s you run the clients on, the more points your username and the NCSU team earns! 12/10/2007 4:15:03 PM
not going up as fast as i thought i would...was hoping to be top 100 but stuck at 103..was 106 few weeks ago...do i need to close out my browser when i sleep for this to speed up? i always leave open my aim and aim boxes, and maybe a few folder and a browser and maybe a word document...then when i come back the next day i can work on it without having to open it
12/10/2007 4:16:56 PM
^ i doubt you'd see much change, since browsers and such utilize ram more than they do cpu cycles...that said, it can't hurt

damn we've been hurting lately
12/11/2007 9:32:37 AM
everything I got is runnin wide open. only I should probably try and tweak it. the one on this current laptop is only using 50% of cpu. ps3 is runnin wild, other 2 laptops are runnin constantly. anyway I could make it use more cpu%? on the laptops that are just sittin there, not actually performing any other "work"? also, any tried running a second client under vmware? ]
12/13/2007 1:16:21 PM
^ Do you have hypertheading enabled on the 50% CPU laptops? The best thing to do is disable it and it should go to 100%.
12/13/2007 1:20:06 PM
yeah go into the BIOS and disable hyperthreading
12/13/2007 1:42:54 PM
they're dual core. just installed smb client on one of them. so it'll just be sittin there effin SMOKIN! i'll be doin some travelling with the other laptop, so after I'm done with travel, I'll throw SMB on it as well.
12/13/2007 3:48:40 PM
yeah u should def try to install as many SMP clients as you can...those clients produce all kinds of points
12/13/2007 4:31:41 PM
currently I'm sorta limited right now. but I'll be putting smb on when I'm done traveling. I still have the ps3 and 2 laptops runnin (one with and one without).

^^ I'm going to assume you've already uninstalled(and deleted folder)/reinstalled(to a different folder) Do you overclock? is everything else stable on the system? i would definitely run a memtest first off since memory can cause this issue. secondly a scandisk/chkdsk is always goodare you running it as a service? if not how do you shut it down? and if not, try running it as a service.in the setup, did you allow "big WUs"? the >5MB setting?do you run any sort of software firewalls like norton or zone alarm or anything?^ thats too bad...we could use the boost]

i know all that, but here in lies the problem, when an error occurs it's not as easy to close and restart as a batch file, changing it to a service will not helpi didn't mean i run a batch file so i can log it, i just meant i add the flag so i can log it, i run the batch file for other reasons[Edited on December 21, 2007 at 4:20 PM. I'm going to install this on my parents computers when I get out to CA tonight. My mom has a P4 Dell running XP Home. What version of the client should I get that will be completely invisible to her? I'm guessing:Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista text-only console (with built-in Windows-service-install option) 6.00 beta1 On my PC running the SMP client, I have the little command window running to show the progress of the work unit. On theirs, I want this to be gone.
12/22/2007 8:48:12 AM
^i'm just saying to TRY running it as a service instead of manually...maybe that will result in less problems. it probably won't help, but then you've tried almost everything else.
12/22/2007 12:28:04 PM
I installed the SMP client, but I didn't realize that I hadn't set the team ID yet. Is there any way to do thsi without uninstalling then reinstalling?

^ yes, create a shortcut to fah.exe, right click, go to properties, add -configonly to the target, after the quote.
