Really just shutting the bed against a mediocre at best P5 team.
9/11/2021 9:05:06 PM
Wilson out for the rest of the game officially
9/11/2021 9:06:12 PM
Not outplaying them anymore
9/11/2021 9:20:20 PM
^^^par for the course, right?
9/11/2021 9:28:55 PM
Definitely the case for OOC games, yeah ^
9/11/2021 9:29:21 PM
Leary missed Smith. That should’ve been 6. DamnKinda unimpressed with Leary. He’s gotta plenty of room to improve. [Edited on September 11, 2021 at 9:36 PM. Reason : A]

This game was over on the first drive responding to that opening KO return when we marched it down the field with ease and then ended the drive with a telegraphed screen (the 4th one of the drive) that got stuffed then the too-cute-for-our-own-good jumping pass from the RB. If you can't come away with points on that drive on the road, it's done. Another missed big game opportunity with Doeren. This guy is literally allergic to winning these types of games.
9/11/2021 9:40:57 PM
Lotta criticism of Leary for a team that can't run the ball
9/11/2021 9:40:59 PM
I’m not watching but my mother says they are sucking. Any updates?
9/11/2021 9:41:41 PM
9/11/2021 9:42:22 PM
I don’t even know how much is Leary’s fault and how much is play calling. 3rd and long and we throw 4 yards short the line to gain. And he appeared to be the first option. OL getting worked so Leary has to get it out quick but damn. We have tried to throw deep only maybe 3 times that I recall. And had open WRs every play. Missed Smith on one. Emezie caught one on the sideline. And Emezie missed one on the sideline before half. Leary has definitely made some head scratchers. Got bailed out by Carter catching that lame duck on 3rd down to open the second half. And fumbled another but we recovered it on the following drive. He seems indecisive and timid a bit, but maybe the coverage is that good
9/11/2021 9:45:01 PM
I thought he had been pretty good until that duck. It's hard to tell if throwing short is on him or the play call but he made some good throws the his receivers just missed.
9/11/2021 9:50:09 PM
early in the game I thought he missed a couple throws but maybe it was just nerves or whatever. He hasn’t been terrible, obviously. And maybe I’m taking my frustrations with the offense out on Leary. He’s gotten no help from the OL and run game. And even some drops from Carter tooAlso Ingle just begging for a penalty. Didn’t lower his helmet but kinda a cheap shot on a ball clearly not getting caught. Sheesh.[Edited on September 11, 2021 at 9:54 PM. Reason : A]
9/11/2021 9:54:07 PM
Yea I've maybe not been watching close enoughRegardless, we missed too many chances early, that was the game
9/11/2021 9:55:49 PM
Leary isnt why we're losing this game but the point is he aint gonna be the type of QB who will win you a game like this[Edited on September 11, 2021 at 10:00 PM. Reason : \/same, USF had me convinced we were good but im completely emotionally unaffected right now]
9/11/2021 9:57:09 PM
Luckily I've mostly deadened the part of my brain that this affects!
9/11/2021 9:57:16 PM
^^ yeah that’s a fair way to put it ^ I’m not there yet. I think I’m getting closer but Im still not there.
9/11/2021 9:58:53 PM
there are only 3 divisions in football: the NFC, the AFC and the SEC West
9/11/2021 10:02:37 PM
^^the secret is to have it just kinda blend in with the general noise, kinda like the hulk
9/11/2021 10:07:16 PM
Another 3rd down and we don’t throw it past the sticks. It’s 4 down territory but damn
9/11/2021 10:13:12 PM
9/11/2021 10:13:20 PM
Another beautiful pass by Leary. Can’t believe rwoody doubted him
9/11/2021 10:19:37 PM
Should’ve gone wildcat there. Person wouldn’t have muffed the snap.
9/11/2021 10:20:09 PM
Dang that penalty take us out of jump pass territory[Edited on September 11, 2021 at 10:20 PM. Reason : ^great minds? ]
9/11/2021 10:20:20 PM
Lol the announcers are really trying to hammer home the ACC sucks narrative (which is true, it sucks). But the “ACC fans breathe a sigh of relief after Miami hangs on” like any of us give a shit if Miami wins or not. “The ACC is going to be doing some soul searching on Monday” lol
9/11/2021 10:26:32 PM
I figured the lack of WR rotation and lack of benching Carter meant that Rooks just suckedThat he doesnt really means we have coaching issues
9/11/2021 10:34:33 PM
Did we win?
9/11/2021 11:38:03 PM
Defense played pretty well but we had 3 rushers most of the night and no pressure on their QB. Leary sucked at hitting open receivers on long balls. Our Online is supposed to be a strength and couldn’t run the ball and pass protection was questionable. Last thought, maybe the speedster Rooks should play more and bring in Carter for red zone jump balls.
9/11/2021 11:42:54 PM
Yes, we won, 75-74 in 5OTs. It was just super boring
9/12/2021 7:47:53 AM
^^ yeah I think a lot of that was by design. If you start blitzing LBs or DBs and you leave guys open, they can turn a 3-4 yard pass into big plays. Especially since that type of offense generally runs on the QB getting it out really fast. But not getting pressure really hurt. Seems like you gotta mix in some blitzes occasionally too. Lost at the LOS on both sides. Defense wasn’t really the issue though. They gave up 17 points to an air raid offense. That pretty great. Unfortunate ending to the first half (aided by declining the penalty) was brutal. Could’ve been 7-3 going to half even after a pretty disastrous first half…I remember Leary missing Smith on what would’ve been a 90+ yard TD. Any maybe missed Smith another time? But I also remember Carter with at least 3 drops and another deep ball that he didn’t come up with…probably wasn’t a true drop, but was a catchable ball. My recollection is that until the 4th Q we didn’t go deep much at all.
9/12/2021 8:17:29 AM
The same fans that were shitting on Bailey Hockman are now shitting on Leary. Hockman put up decent numbers and led us in crucial drives. We wouldn't have won 7 ACC games with Ben Finley. I think some people forget Leary has only half a season under his belt as starter. We certainly didn't lose because of him.
9/13/2021 12:33:59 AM
Yes I think expectations were probably unreasonably high for Leary given his lack of game experience. He’s got a high ceiling but still needs more experience and growth. He’s not Philip Rivers but he’s fine. WRs dropping passes and little time in the pocket didn’t help him
9/13/2021 7:20:10 AM
Fagan and Payton out for the season. this just went bad to worse.
9/13/2021 1:14:20 PM
Hot take: Fagan is a bigger loss than Wilson
9/13/2021 1:30:46 PM
Not that hot of a take. and i agree.
9/13/2021 1:32:57 PM
Damn
9/13/2021 1:33:34 PM
9/13/2021 1:38:07 PM
It's me, I'm the Ben Finley stan.I think the guy that sucked in high school is going to be a great college qb and that he didn't get a scholarship solely based on being Ryan's brother
9/13/2021 1:51:01 PM
If we don't spend the rest of the season drilling some accuracy into Leary every single game we play is gonna look like the Mississippi State game.
9/14/2021 8:15:59 AM
jesus christ what
9/14/2021 10:12:55 AM
Leary missed a couple throws but I didn’t think he was the issue.
9/14/2021 10:16:07 AM
He missed a lot of wide open long ones or placed others that got dropped pretty poorly. Off the top of my head I'd say at least 10 of his 19 incompletions were on longer passes that he just completely missed. Carter had 3(?) bad drops but the rest were just misses. He only had 7 completions >10 yards and 3 of those in were the 4th when MSST's defense was taking it easy. In the 2nd quarter we had no completions >10 yards -- that's also when they started playing man defense because that's better at covering short throws and runs. Most of those >10 yard throws were still like 15 yards or so each.A high volume of screens and short throws and not a lot of success long throws is just a sign of Leary being unreliable deep. He has a strong arm and *can* make long throws on dimes but I can only think of a handful of good deep throws he's made. Just watch his ACCN highlights from the USF on YouTube, only 1 or 2 of those throws he made were any good, the rest were terrible defense, lucky bobbles, or good effort by the WR. Part of that is Beck's power spread system favoring runs and shorter throws, sure, but I still haven't seen anything to change my mind on his deep ball skills being weak.[Edited on September 14, 2021 at 10:53 AM. 9/14/2021 10:53:03 AM
I know he missed a few, especially that Anthony Smith and then he was just a hair off on a deep one to Carter…but it wasnt totally uncatchable off Carter had laid out, imo. I remember another that I thought went through Emezie’s hands along the sideline but they never showed a replay so I dunno how catchable it was. I honestly don’t remember us even throwing deep 10 times but I’ll be honest, I was only half watching by the 4th quarter. Miss State’s strength apparently was their secondary, and our guys weren’t doing a great job getting open. Leary wasn’t perfect either though.
9/14/2021 10:58:13 AM
10 may be high tbh, I'd have to watch it again, that was just my feeling when the game ended. Also not to mention pretty sure that catch that set us up in the red zone in the 1st quarter was OB and shouldn't have been complete, but we did too good of a job hurrying up and I missed if there was any replay
9/14/2021 11:03:08 AM
Leary aside though, what really gets me is our total failure to adapt at all. MSST adjusted during the 2nd quarter, we didn't. 2 totally different games.
9/14/2021 11:49:47 AM
They game planned to find a way to take Wilson out of the game (I don't know when fagan went out)
9/14/2021 12:09:34 PM
Fagan was late 4th.
